Where BBC Broom Cupboard's Simon Parkin is now - from weather man to film star

Daily Mirror5 hours ago
The BBC's Broom Cupboard, which celebrates its 40th birthday this year, was occupied by a number of famous TV presenters, one of them was Simon Parkin - here's what he's up to now
A tiny room at the BBC became infamous when the corporation started to use the space as a studio where bubbly, young presenters would introduce children's programmes. Thanks to its diminutive size, it became affectionately known as the Broom Cupboard.

Former This Morning host Philip Schofield presented the first ever slot on September 9 1985 and other famous faces such as Zoe Ball, Andy Crane and Andi Peters also sat behind the little control desk for CBBC.

There were a couple of much-loved characters who popped up in the cupboard on occasion too - Gordon the Gopher and Edd the Duck, for example. It comes after Richard Osman reveals an axed Ant and Dec show was 'expensive car crash'.

Another cheeky chappy who became a regular feature in the live slots was Simon Parkin. He began hosting from the Broom Cupboard in 1987 after starting out as a DJ on Radio Tees , the local commercial radio station for Teeside. He hadn't had his job there for long when he read an article in the Daily Star revealing Phil was leaving the afternoon cupboard slot to host new Saturday morning show, Going Live. He called up the boss at the time, was invited for an audition and got the job presenting the Christmas holiday morning links.
He told thebroomcupboard.co.uk how it felt to be on national telly so soon after starting out: "I really couldn't believe that I was there. I really didn't have any training," he recalled. "But it was a very relaxed, friendly place in which to be and learn. And you know, to look back, I had BBC1 to play with for three minute chunks at a time - it wouldn't happen now. There I was, and only five months previously I was on hospital radio."

Simon revealed that it wasn't until Andi Peters, who he got on with immediately, started working there too that he honed his TV presenting skills. He said it was thanks to Andi's visual brain and expertise that he learnt the ropes.
Describing his time in the cramped studio as "the best few years of my life", he remembers going out to lots of parties and having loads of fun despite not earning an awful lot. "We just genuinely had a really good time, on screen and off," he said. "Myself and Andi, and Stephanie Lowe and later Philippa Forrester, we all got on really well. We'd do a Sunday show and then all go out for lunch. I remember my flatmate used to moan at me for being on the phone at length to Andi. We'd just be chatting and coming up with ideas. It was just a really good, energised period of my life. I was very happy!"

Simon stayed at the Beeb for the next five years working on shows such The Ozone, But First This, CBBC2 and Top of the Pops. He also kept up his DJ work at the BBC 's London station GLR and nationally on BBC Radio Five.
In 1992 he was tempted over to rivals ITV to present for its new breakfast telly station, GMTV where he was to be the children's presenter. He went on to host programmes across the ITV network for Yorkshire Television, Granada and Westcountry. He ended up on Meridian in a slightly surprising slot - fronting the weather reports.

Despite knowing nothing about meteorology, he was relieved when he was assured he didn't need to know about the science and was hired to cover maternity leave. He presented the nightly reports during the news until 2017.
Simon has lived in Somerset with his wife Celina, their two children, Emily and Charlie and dog Pebble since 1998. He has returned to his first love of radio and now presents the weekday news and magazine show Simon Parkin in the Morning on BBC Somerset.
Perhaps thanks to his time on front of the camera, he has also turned his hand to acting a few times. In 2018 he featured in horror films Grindsploitation 666 and Maneater, where, staying true to his roots, he was the radio announcer in both. In 2020 he played the lead role of Lester - a radio presenter - in Dead Air. The film's IMDb description reads: "Lester is a boring man living a boring life. He presents the overnight show on local station, Cosmic FM to an average listenership of 1. Stuck in a seemingly endless cycle of monotony, one night Lester's world is changed forever when he begins to receive call after call from panicked first-time listeners."

Downton Abbey star dealt serious set back as BBC show cancelled after one series

The star has been dealt a major blow as her new series from an Oscar-nominated creator was axed. Downton Abbey star has been given a tough hit to her career as the BBC appeared to cancel her show from an Oscar-nominated creator after just one series. Michelle Dockery, who rose to fame as Lady Mary in the ITV show, has experienced less success with her recent television project. ‌ This Town, created by Peaky Blinders' Steven Knight, will reportedly not be returning for a second season, reports the Express. The six-part 1980s musical drama premiered on BBC One on March 31 last year. ‌ Prior to the first episode's airing, Dockery expressed her enthusiasm for her role of Estella, an alcoholic singer, stating, "She's an amazing character. I just loved her. When I read the script for the first time, I just fell in love with all of the characters in this; it's just so beautiful and relatable." ‌ In the series, Dockery was almost unrecognisable from her Downton days, sporting a huge backcombed perm, heavy eye makeup, and the iconic era's fashion trends. Her refined Downton accent was replaced with a Brummie dialect, and she showcased her impressive singing talent with a stirring rendition of Somewhere Over The Rainbow during a funeral scene. Like her fellow cast members, Dockery performed all her own singing in the drama, which served as Knight's homage to the West Midlands music scene in the 1980s. The programme kicked off impressively with 3.2 million viewers, but by the end of its run, it had lost a million. But it still managed to bag the Royal Television Society Award for Limited Series and Single Drama earlier this year. ‌ At the launch at the BFI in London, creator Steven expressed his optimism that the show would have a long lifespan. "I certainly have enough ideas for more episodes going forward. I hope we are with these characters for a long time to come," he stated. ‌ However, the BBC seemed to confirm that there will be no further episodes. A spokesperson commented: "We're hugely grateful to Steven Knight and the cast and crew for bringing This Town to life - in no small part due to Steven's passion for the West Midlands. "We look forward to working with him on new projects in the future, and we're in talks about what's next." ‌ Also for fans of Downton Abbey, another period drama is gaining serious popularity on the BBC. Wolf Hall is a British TV series based on two of Hilary Mantel's acclaimed novels Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies. This fictionalised biography follows the life of Thomas Cromwell - the influential advisor to King Henry VIII. The six-part series first aired on the BBC in 2015, directed by BAFTA-winning filmmaker Peter Kosminsky and was adapted for the screen by acclaimed screenwriter Peter Straughan. Bargain Hunt Mark Stacey's major bowel cancer surgery and life off the screen

The antiques specialist had a bowel cancer tumour surgically removed. Bargain Hunt favourite Mark Stacey is a familiar face for antiques fans. As well as his long-standing slot on the BBC show, he has also regularly shared his expertise on Flog It!, Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is, and Antiques Road Trip over the years. But much of his life off the screen remains unknown. ‌ Mark became fascinated with antiques as a child, when he began collecting stamps and coins. This passion evolved over time, and he began to collect small silver items and artworks, which paved the way for his career in antiques trading. ‌ The 60-year-old joined the Bargain Hunt team back in 2002 after responding to an ad in the Antiques Trade Gazette. His screen test was a triumph, securing his long-time spot on the programme. ‌ But it hasn't all been smooth sailing, as the star underwent major surgery in 2023, seeing an influx of fan support. Following the surgery to remove a bowel cancer tumour, he received an outpouring of support from fans when he shared a post-hospital photo, reported Liverpool Echo. ‌ In the post online, he said: "Thanks to Lincoln Country Hospital, had a bowel cancer tumour removed to robotics on Thursday, this pic on Friday morning." He added: "Our NHS is amazing, we must protect it." ‌ Reflecting on his career, the star said: "I don't think I could do anything other than what I do know. If I had to have a change of career, I am sure it would be something creative." He also noted the evolution of the antiques trade, offering an insight for those considering a career in the industry. He said: "The antiques trade is changing fast for anyone wanting to get into it. ‌ "It offers great fun, excitement and very little money, as a dealer that is, but you get to meet a wonderful array of eccentric people who have passion and many stories, some may even be true, but first and foremost you must research and handle lots of things and be prepared to make a loss - this is how you learn." In other Bargain Hunt news, a guest on the show was recently left in bits after finding out that the item they brought had sold for over '100 times its value.' Bargain Hunt star Irita Marriott was hosting her Discovery+ series, The Derbyshire Auction House, when she discovered a heartfelt story with guest Helen and her son Ben. ‌ While scouring their home for hidden gems, Helen presented a set of family snaps which contained original signed shots from acclaimed photographers that dated back to 1975. They included works from Graham Smith and Sirkka-Liisa Konttinen, whose pieces are now displayed in the Tate Gallery and the Victoria and Albert Museum. In a heartbreaking twist, it was unveiled that the photos were being auctioned to help fund the care of Helen's husband, Alan. Alan was suffering from dementia at the time and required full time care. However, he sadly passed away before the episode aired with the money being used towards his funeral.
