Apollo draws US$61 billion in record quarter, but less from wealth

Business Times3 days ago
[NEW YORK] Apollo Capital Management reported record earnings from fees in the second quarter, driven by a boost in lending activity and a bump in managed assets, but reeled in less money from wealthy individuals.
The firm collected US$61 billion in the quarter, bringing its total managed assets to US$840 billion, according to a statement on Tuesday (Aug 5). Analysts had expected Apollo to report about US$812 billion of assets, Bloomberg-compiled estimates show.
The acquisition of collateralized loan obligation manager Irradiant Partners by Apollo affiliate Redding Ridge Asset Management contributed to an uptick in inflows, as did commitments to its investment-grade and asset-backed finance funds.
The increase in inflows helped boost the profit it earns from fees, particularly from its capital solutions strategy, to US$627 million from April through June, a quarterly record. Credit also made up the bulk of Apollo's originations in the second quarter, which totalled US$81 billion.
Apollo has been looking to attract more capital from wealthy individuals, especially as fundraising for both private equity and private credit from institutions has decreased. Earlier this year, the firm launched its New Markets division to tap into more wealth channels, and said in its second-quarter statement that it was continuing its expansion into semi-liquid products.
The firm took in US$4 billion from global wealth, down from almost US$5 billion in the first quarter.
Its asset-backed finance strategy returned 3.1 per cent in the second quarter, marking the the highest return across its business segments. Its flagship private equity strategy returned 0.7 per cent.
Apollo reported US$219 million of realised performance fees, a 25 per cent year-over-year increase, thanks to a number of sizable sales from its flagship private equity arm. However, the firm said opportunities to monetise investments are 'prudently delayed' given markets for traditional exits, such as mergers, acquisitions and public offerings, are still sluggish. Vietnam's F88 pawnshop chain sees shares hit ceiling in market debut

[HO CHI MINH CITY] Shares of Vietnam's largest pawnshop chain operator, F88 Investment, surged nearly 40 per cent to hit the ceiling price at the close of its trading debut on the Unlisted Public Company Market (UPCoM) on Friday (Aug 8), boosting its market capitalisation to 7.3 trillion dong (S$357.4 million). With 400 shares traded during the day, its price rose from the opening reference of 634,900 dong to 888,800 dong per share, making it the most expensive stock on the market. These shares were part of the 8.26 million listed by F88 on UPCoM – an alternative trading platform with lower listing requirements than the country's main bourse, the Ho Chi Minh City Stock Exchange (HoSE), and often regarded as a stepping stone before companies move to the latter. Founded in 2013, F88 plans to list on HoSE by 2027 with a valuation of US$1 billion. It is currently the only pawn service company traded on Vietnam's stock exchange. 'F88 clearly sees participation in the capital market not only as a means to enhance transparency and supervision but also as a financial driver to scale the business, improve operational standards, and move closer to the goal of listing on HoSE in the future,' said chairman Phung Anh Tuan, as quoted in the company's press release on Aug 8. According to its prospectus released on Aug 4, F88 plans a stock issuance between 2025 and Q1 2026 following its UPCoM listing, aiming to raise funds by issuing approximately 101.7 million new shares to existing shareholders at that point. A NEWSLETTER FOR YOU Friday, 8.30 am Asean Business Business insights centering on South-east Asia's fast-growing economies. Sign Up Sign Up The pawnshop operator is backed by several foreign institutional investors, which collectively held over 55 per cent of the company as at June this year. Among them is Vietnam's oldest private equity firm, Mekong Capital, which owned nearly 37 per cent via two Singapore-based entities, Skydom and Winter Flame. Serving the underbanked According to the State Bank of Vietnam, 52 per cent of Vietnamese people – approximately 50 million – held bank accounts as at mid-2022. However, around half of these account holders lacked access to credit from banks. F88 targets these underbanked and unbanked customers by offering short-term small loans secured by vehicles, registration papers or electronic devices. Loans secured by motorbikes range from three million to 50 million dong, while those secured by cars range from 23 million to two billion dong. The monthly interest rate is about 0.9 per cent. Including loan management and asset management fees, the effective annual interest rate ranges from 32 to 55 per cent, according to the company's website. In addition to vehicle title-lending products, F88 is also expanding into the microinsurance segment and banking agency services. Through a strategic partnership with Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBBank), F88 is positioning its branches as 'modern financial transaction offices', offering various basic services such as customer identification, cash deposits and withdrawals, money transfers, payment collection and disbursement. Compared to other alternative finance models in Vietnam, such as peer-to-peer lending and buy-now-pay-later, which still lack a specific regulatory environment, 'pawnshop services operate under a clearer legal framework and are more tightly regulated by authorities,' FiinGroup analysts noted in a report earlier this month. F88 said it is operating 888 stores across 34 provinces and cities nationwide to date, accounting for about 70 per cent of the total number of chain-affiliated pawnshops in the country. As at the end of last December, the firm served more than one million customers, with total outstanding pawn loans reaching 4.6 trillion dong. However, this remained minuscule compared with the estimated 200 trillion dong in total outstanding loans in Vietnam's pawnshop market in 2024, according to FiinGroup data, highlighting significant room for future growth. While 'next-generation' pawnshop companies such as F88 have steadily expanded their presence in recent years, they captured only about 3.2 per cent of the market in 2024, with the remaining share held by more than 23,700 traditional operators. Financial outlook In its most recent credit rating update in April, FiinRatings revised F88's credit upgrade outlook to 'Positive', reflecting expectations of improved capital and liquidity, while maintaining the rating at 'BBB-'. F88 reported a post-tax loss in 2023 but returned to profitability in 2024 and the first half of 2025, with after-tax earnings of 351.3 billion dong and 254.7 billion dong, respectively. The group targets a 33.2 per cent increase in its revenue this year to 3.6 trillion dong, with the profit after tax growing by 53.3 per cent to 538.6 billion dong. It also aims to expand its store count to 1,000 by 2026 and 2,000 by 2030.

Singapore stocks end Friday in the red amid mixed Asia markets; STI down 0.4%

[SINGAPORE] Local stocks ended its rally to close lower on Friday (Aug 8), following a mixed performance across Asian markets as investors navigated a week marked by geopolitical uncertainties and corporate earnings. The blue-chip Straits Times Index (STI) was down 0.4 per cent or 18.32 points at 4,239.83. Across the broader market, decliners outnumbered gainers 344 to 190, with 1.3 billion securities worth S$2 billion changing hands. The week closed with mixed moves across Singapore and the region, as earnings reports took centre stage over broader macro themes such as global trade and interest rates, said Geoff Howie, market strategist at the Singapore Exchange. 'Earnings momentum is expected to build in Singapore next week, while market attention shifts back to broader macroeconomic themes,' he told The Business Times. Howie noted that next Tuesday (Aug 12) will be pivotal, with markets closely watching the release of July's US consumer price index data and the scheduled expiry of the 90-day pause on US-China trade tariffs. On the STI, DBS was the top gainer. It rose 2 per cent or S$0.99 to S$50.74, after reporting a second-quarter net profit of S$2.82 billion on Thursday. It fell 13.9 per cent or S$1.08 to S$6.72, after posting a 1 per cent dip in first-half earnings to S$536 million. The drop was due to lower turnover from its gas business. The other two local banks ended in negative territory, with OCBC falling 1.7 per cent or S$0.30 to S$16.79 and UOB closing 0.3 per cent or S$0.11 lower at S$35.70 Elsewhere in the region, markets closed mixed on Friday. Among the gainers, Japan's Nikkei 225 rose 1.9 per cent and Malaysia's KLCI added 0.5 per cent. Meanwhile, South Korea's Kospi declined 0.6 per cent and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index dropped 0.9 per cent. Despite the uneven finish, Asian equity markets turned in a bullish performance with all sectors gaining this week. This was supported by June quarter earnings looking strong, said Kai Wang, Asia equity market strategist at Morningstar. He noted that most of this week's top contributors were tech or Internet stocks, suggesting that markets remain driven by secular AI trends. This may be reflected in the US market as well given some of the robust growth shown in the earnings of the US 'Magnificent 7' – a group of mega-cap tech companies – Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet, Amazon, Meta, Nvidia and Tesla. 'We think that some of these positive results should translate into further bullishness for major China communication services and internet platform names as we continue into earnings season,' he added.

Expedia shares soar on upbeat forecast, US travel rebound

Shares of Expedia surged more than 17 per cent in premarket trading on Friday, after the online travel agent raised its full-year gross bookings forecast and struck an optimistic tone on the recovery in U.S. travel demand. Expedia is the latest travel company to hint at a rebound in demand, following weakness earlier this year when consumers fretted over the economic impact of President Donald Trump's tariff policies. "Since the beginning of July, we've seen an uptick in overall travel demand, particularly in the U.S.," CEO Ariane Gorin said on the earnings call on Thursday. The company expects 2025 gross bookings to grow between 3 per cent to 5 per cent, up 1 per centage point from its earlier forecast. Morningstar analyst Dan Wasiolek expects bookings growth to accelerate further to 7 per cent in 2026 as demand improves alongside policy visibility. Tariffs had disrupted travel spending, "but it appears prospective U.S. travelers are prepared to book again," said Danni Hewson, head of financial analysis at AJ Bell. Expedia has also been focusing on simplifying its organizational structure by eliminating roles, streamlining operations and deploying generative AI technology. Its second-quarter margin grew by 190 basis points, surpassing the company's May guidance of a 75- to 100-basis-point increase. The biggest fundamental takeaway is that Expedia's continued strategic focus and tighter expense controls are driving more consistent results, said Baird analyst Michael Bellisario. Expedia also joined industry peers Marriott and Airbnb in noting strong bookings from higher-income consumers while lower-income consumers were more cautious with discretionary spending. Expedia's shares trade at about 12.01 times their forward profit estimates, below the industry median of 14.19.
