Wink Martindale, Popular and Durable Game Show Host, Dies at 91

New York Times16-04-2025

Wink Martindale, a radio personality who became a television star as a dapper and affable host of game shows like 'Gambit' and 'Tic-Tac-Dough' in the 1970s and '80s and 'Debt' in the '90s, died on Tuesday in Rancho Mirage, Calif. He was 91.
Nashville Publicity Group, which represented him, announced his death in a statement.
A veteran of the game show circuit, Mr. Martindale was involved in more than 20 shows, either as a producer or host.
His first game show, in 1964, was 'What's This Song,' in which contestants paired with celebrities to identify tunes for cash prizes. The show was short-lived, as were many others he experimented with.
'Gambit' was based on the card game blackjack, and 'Tic-Tac-Dough' combined trivia with the classic puzzle game tic-tac-toe. In 'Debt,' the prize was the main focus: Contestants would arrive with bills for credit cards, car payments or student loans, which would be paid off if they answered a series of questions correctly.
As a vocalist, Mr. Martindale recorded about 20 single records and seven albums. His 1959 spoken-voice narrative recording, 'Deck of Cards,' sold more than a million copies, earning him a gold record, a designation by the Recording Industry Association of America for records that sold 500,000 copies or more. 'Deck of Cards' also brought him an appearance on the Ed Sullivan variety show, where he told the tale of a young American soldier in North Africa who is arrested and charged with playing cards during a church service.
Mr. Martindale received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2006 and was one of the first inductees into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007.
He credited some of his success to his distinctive nickname.
'When I was a kid in Jackson, Tenn., one of my playmates, Jimmy McCord, couldn't say 'Winston,' which is my given name, and he had a speech impediment, and it came out sounding like 'Winky,'' Mr. Martindale told ABC News in 2014. 'So Winston turned into Winky, and then I got into the business and Wink! It served me well, and I just kept Wink all these years.'
Winston Conrad Martindale was born in Jackson on Dec. 4, 1933, to James A. and Frances M. (Mitchell) Martindale. After graduating from high school in 1951, he attended Memphis State College (now the University of Memphis), where he landed his first disc jockey gig at a local station, where he was paid $25 a week. He graduated with a degree in speech and drama.
'I think that I was born with a desire to be a radio announcer,' he was quoted as saying. 'I always had that great desire to sit behind a microphone. My first 'mic' was two paper cups attached to a string. It wasn't long before I was sitting behind the real thing.'
He later ascended to WHBQ in Memphis, a powerhouse station in the South, where in 1954 he notably secured an on-air interview with Elvis Presley — by calling his mother — after the release of Presley's first record, 'That's All Right.'
Mr. Martindale moved to Los Angeles in 1959 and was featured on several radio stations in and around that city, including KMPC, which was known then as the 'Station of the Stars,' owned by the 'singing cowboy' and actor Gene Autry. Even after finding his calling in television as a game show host, Mr. Martindale was the station's midday personality for 12 years starting in 1971.
His marriage in 1954 to Madelyn Leech ended in divorce in 1971. They had four children, Lisa, Lyn, Laura and Wink Jr. He married Sandra Ferra, who survives him, in 1975. Mr. Martindale also had a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Complete information on survivors was not immediately available.

Jamie Foxx Has One Question For Sean Combs in Midst of N.Y. Racketeering Trial: ‘Why You So Nasty, Diddy?'

Jamie Foxx is not pulling punches when it comes to his thoughts on the Sean 'Diddy' Combs' New York sex trafficking and racketeering trial. During a recent appearance at the Comedy Store in Los Angeles, the actor/singer lashed out at the disgraced former music mogul who he once honored at Diddy's 2008 Hollywood Walk of Fame induction ceremony. 'Diddy is fu–in' crazy, huh?' Foxx said in footage shared by Urban Hollywood. 'I don't know if he is going to jail, but he is a nasty motherf–er. Am I right? Especially for us… white people like, 'It's cool,' but for Black people… that was our hero. All that g–damn baby oil, boy! Why you so nasty, Diddy?' When officers raided Combs' homes in Los Angeles and Miami last March prosecutors said they found drugs as well as more than 1,000 bottles of lubricant and baby oil. More from Billboard 50 Cent Keeps His Promise by Posting the 'Really Bad' Things Diddy Has Said About Donald Trump Jessie J Reveals 'Early Breast Cancer' Diagnosis: 'Cancer Sucks in Any Form' Big Thief Announce New Album, 'Double Infinity' The comments from Foxx about the shocking testimony in the Combs trial in reference to the rapper's marathon 'Freak Off' sex parties is relevant because in 2023 rumors circulated that Combs allegedly poisoned Foxx, leading to the actor's hospitalization for what was later confirmed to be a stroke. Foxx opened up about the rumors surrounding his mystery illness last month in a chat with The Hollywood Reporter, shooting down the allegations that Diddy tried to have him killed via poisoning. 'I'm in f—ing perfect shape. [I saw things like,] 'Puffy tried to kill me.' No, Puffy didn't try to kill me. When they said I was a clone, that made me flip,' Foxx said. 'I'm sitting in the hospital bed, like, 'These b—h-a– motherf—ers are trying to clone me.'' While a spokesperson for Combs did not reply to Billboard's request for a comment on the allegations, his team has repeatedly said the rumor was false and unfounded. Foxx also addressed the allegations in his What Had Happened Was… Netflix special in December, in which he said, 'The internet said Puffy was trying to kill me, that's what the internet was saying. I know what you thinking, 'Diddy?' Hell no, I left them parties early. I was out by 9. 'Something don't look right… it looks slippery in here!' The Combs trial is in its fourth week and on Wednesday (June 4) Bryana Bongolan, a friend of Diddy's ex, prosecution star witness Cassie Ventura, alleged that Diddy dangled her over a 17th-floor apartment balcony in 2016 before shoving her into the balcony's furniture. Combs is facing five criminal counts of racketeering conspiracy, sex trafficking by force, fraud or coercion and transportation to engage in prostitution, charges that could land him in prison for the rest of his life; Combs has denied the allegations against him. Green Day Rocks Back To No. 1

Green Day's Saviors returns to No. 1 on the U.K.'s Official Rock & Metal Albums chart after the ... More deluxe edition drops, giving fans new music. (Photo by Frederic J. Brown / AFP) (Photo by FREDERIC J. BROWN/AFP via Getty Images) It's been almost a year and a half since Green Day released its most recent album Saviors, but fans are clearly still excited about the project. The pop-punk legends recently dropped the highly-anticipated deluxe edition of the set, which they'd been promoting for months with new tunes. Sales of the title grew dramatically, and this week the Grammy winner's latest full-length returns to multiple rankings and even brings the band back to the top spot on one tally in the United Kingdom. Saviors reappears at No. 1 on the Official Rock & Metal Albums chart this week. The full-length hadn't been seen on this list since January, when it spent two frames in the lower reaches of the top 40 before disappearing. Last week's champion, Will You Haunt Me, with That Same Patience by Bury Tomorrow, descends dramatically, dipping from No. 1 to No. 26 in just its second frame on the tally. Now that it's back at No. 1, Saviors earns just its second stay in the penthouse on the list of the top-selling rock and metal releases in the U.K. Green Day debuted the project atop the tally in early February 2024. The set attempted to earn more time on the throne, living in the runner-up space for the next month, but it was unable to lead again until the release of its deluxe edition. Saviors only manages to reenter the top 10 on one of the five U.K.-based rankings where it finds a home at the moment. It returns this frame to each of them, after not appearing on any of the rosters just days ago. The set breaks back into the top 20 on the Official Physical Albums, Official Albums Sales, and Official Vinyl Albums charts, appearing at Nos. 13, 14, and 19, respectively. The title doesn't perform nearly as well when it comes to purchases on platforms like iTunes, as Saviors finds its way back to the Official Album Downloads roster, but only at No. 45. In the past, Saviors has reached No. 1 on each and every one of the charts on which it appears in the United Kingdom. It has understandably spent the most time on the Official Rock & Metal Albums list, racking up 39 frames. It has yet to manage 20 appearances on any of the other rosters.

A Pirouette Through ‘John Wick' Lore

Early in the 2019 film 'John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum,' our hero enters what may be the world's most peculiar dance studio. Part ballet academy, part dojo, the expansive space is also the Manhattan headquarters of the Ruska Roma, a Russian crime syndicate that first took in Wick when he was just a boy and taught him to kill. Onstage, a lithe danseuse is ordered by her instructor to perform pirouette after exhausting pirouette till she drops. In 'From the World of John Wick: Ballerina' (in theaters June 6), this small glimpse of the school is expanded tenfold. That spinning dancer, Eve, played by Ana De Armas, is now the star of the show. Over the course of the film, we get a closer look at the canvas of tattoos on her back and learn how she came to get them. We find out about the school's traditions and initiations, as well as the Russian myths and legends that shape its mission. Since this is a Wick film, we also get to watch Eve take out fearsome fighters with pots and pans, swords and knives, grenades and ice skates and flame throwers and car doors. There's a lot to see. But with all that inventive mayhem going on, do viewers really need to know that, say, Eve's spirit animal is the kikimora, a haglike creature from Slavic mythology? For lovers of the franchise, the answer is a resounding yes, please. In online chats, fans debate such minutiae as exactly who is in the Ruska Roma (is Winston, the owner of the New York Continental Hotel, secretly a member?), while scholars debate the franchise's folklore and economic systems in books like 'The Worlds of John Wick: The Year's Work at the Continental Hotel.' 'When we made the first Wick movie, we thought we were just making these background rules,' said Basil Iwanyk, one of the producers of 'Ballerina.' 'We had no idea the lore would become one of the above-the-title stars of the movies.' Want all of The Times? Subscribe.
