As the festival season begins, quick commerce platforms have emerged as a dominant force in festive shopping, witnessing a surge in demand for rakhis and gifts for Raksha Bandhan.Consumers are increasingly turning to quick commerce apps for buying items beyond groceries. To tap into this demand, Blinkit , which is currently the market leader, started accepting international orders.'Raksha Bandhan special—we've switched on international orders on Blinkit again this year. Folks living abroad can now send rakhis and gifts to their siblings in India,' chief executive Albinder Dhindsa said in a LinkedIn post.Further, Swiggy 's Instamart has also seen a growth in demand for rakhis compared to last year's sales.'Having surpassed last year's rakhi sales earlier this week, we have now achieved a 3.5x surge in orders for rakhi compared to the same period last year,' said Manender Kaushik, AVP & category head of Instamart.Beyond the fast delivery and attractive offers, platforms also increased their stock-keeping units (SKUs) to provide a large selection of festive items.'This year, we have increased the selection of rakhis on the platform, partnering with Kalyan Jewellers to offer silver rakhis for the first time on quick commerce,' said Kaushik.Meanwhile, Flipkart Minutes noted an increase in demand for gift packs and hampers. It reported a 5X uptick in orders for chocolates and festive gift boxes, a 12X demand surge for sweets, and a 3X increase in dry fruits.'All-time popular gifting categories continued to drive demand, like sweets, dry fruits, perfumes, and non-food gifting combos, experiencing significant growth. Utility-led products such as wristwatches, handbags, and wallets performed well,' a Flipkart Minutes spokesperson said.Moving beyond the reputation for last-minute orders, platforms like Instamart and Flipkart Minutes are seeing a significant trend of consumers planning their festive purchases in advance.According to Instamart's Kaushik, consumers started shopping on their platform for Raksha Bandhan days before the festival this year. The shift in consumer behaviour—from last-minute shopping to planned—is marked by a substantial increase in order volumes, with shoppers in both tier-1 and tier-2 cities turning to quick commerce for festive shopping.Flipkart Minutes saw shoppers from NCR, Bangalore, and Mumbai, as well as Lucknow, Kanpur, and Patna.

Metro railway introduces air cool chillers to save ground water in Kolkata

1 2 Kolkata: Metro Railway plans to introduce a modern alternative cooling system on the Blue Line to preserve groundwater in Kolkata. Of the metro line's 15 underground stations, the cooling system of 11 will be changed from traditional water-cooled chillers to air-cooled chillers. Bids have been invited for the Rs 150 crore project. Work orders will be placed after the evaluation of the tender. "Work will commence in 2026 and be completed by 2029," a Metro spokesperson said. He said the familiar scene of cooling towers outside metro stations is going to change forever, allowing Metro Railway to save 18 crore litres of groundwater consumption annually. This is the amount required to run the water-cooled chillers for making metro stations cool every year. "Once chillers are replaced, huge amounts of water will be saved, which in turn will help protect the environment and water resources," the spokesperson said. Six private cars used as taxis, 12 bike taxis seized in Coimbatore

COIMBATORE: Transport department officials on Saturday seized six own-board (white number plate) cars used as taxis and 12 bike taxis and imposed a total fine of Rs 1.80 lakh on them. Based on complaints about illegal taxis and bike taxis in the city, joint transport commissioner N Alagarasu instructed transport department officials to conduct surprise inspections. A team of officials, headed by RTO A S Viswanathan, conducted inspections and seized six cars and 12 bike taxes which were found operating without valid permits. Viswanathan said a fine of Rs 10,000 was imposed on each vehicle. He cautioned that car owners should not rent out their vehicles without the proper permit. People should avoid opting for cars that are not permitted, he added. "Such special drives will continue, and stringent action will be taken against all vehicles found misusing permits in violation of the Motor Vehicles Act ," he said. 'Commercial vehicles must undergo an annual fitness check, pay permit fees and renew their permit every five years. In contrast, private vehicles do not require a fitness certificate for the first 15 years, and their insurance costs are lower. Because of this, some people rent out their private cars illegally at rates cheaper than those offered by registered companies,' said an official with the transport department. Mumbai cops arrest three businessmen in gold investment scam cheating investors of Rs 43 crore

Mumbai: The LT Marg police arrested three businessmen, including a chartered accountant who was arrested after he arrived from Dubai on Saturday, in connection with an alleged gold investment scam. They induced investors into investing in profit-making shares and engaged in dabba trading (illegal exchange), cheating them out of nearly Rs 44 crore. The three accused arrested are Ladulad Kanthare, 54, Pallav Kanthare, 27, and Anilkumar Jagetia. They are accused of duping a bullion firm in Zaveri Bazaar by luring them into investing gold and cash, later misappropriating the assets in illegal commodity and stock market trading. According to the police, the complainant and his family run PFive Bullions Pvt Ltd, a gold trading business in Zaveri Bazaar. In early 2023, the complainant's uncle, Anil Mehta, was introduced by chartered accountant Anil Kumar Jagetia to the accused — Ladulal Harakchand Kanther, 54, his son Pallav Ladulal Kanther, 27, and wanted accused Shubham Mahavir Kanther — who operated businesses under the names Maxis Bullion and Pallav Gold. Over the next year, from May 2023 to March 2024, the complainants invested 36.37 kg of gold and Rs 10.51 crore in cash into the accused's companies, with a total value of Rs 43.76 crore. When repayment was demanded, the accused claimed business losses due to fluctuations in gold prices. In a meeting mediated by acquaintances, the accused allegedly admitted to losing the gold and cash through MCX and dabba trading (illegal speculative trading) in India and COMEX dabba trading in Dubai. They signed an agreement to repay Rs 33.25 crore, issuing over 100 cheques, which later bounced. During interrogation, they implicated their associate, Anil Kumar Jagetia, alleging he diverted company funds into gambling trades. | Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI).
