Chopra highlights Pakistan's weakness
Former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra has highlighted Pakistan's struggles under pressure as a key weakness ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, set to begin next week.
While speaking on his YouTube channel, Chopra provided a candid analysis of Pakistan's mental vulnerabilities in high-stakes situations.
"Pakistan's weakness is not a recent issue; it's a perennial problem. Of course, they are the defending champions in the Champions Trophy, but the truth is that they struggle under pressure. They lost to the USA in the last ICC event (the 2024 T20 World Cup) and failed to qualify for the second round," said Chopra.
The cricketer-turned-commentator further emphasised Pakistan's unpredictability as a major drawback heading into the tournament.
"They are inconsistent. Their graph fluctuates. They rarely maintain stability. In a way, they reflect their countryups and downs. The same inconsistency is seen in their cricket team," he stated.
Pakistan's volatility has long been a double-edged sword. While they have pulled off stunning victories, they have also suffered shocking defeats.
Chopra believes this inconsistency adds to their challenges.
"They are volatile and unpredictablePakistan's middle name is unpredictability. Imploding under pressure and inconsistency are major concerns. Can Pakistan overcome these issues? That remains the question, especially since they will be under immense pressure," he said.
Despite being the defending champions from the 2017 edition, Pakistan struggled in recent ICC events, failing to progress beyond the group stage in both the 2023 ODI World Cup and the 2024 T20 World Cup.
The ICC Champions Trophy 2025 is set to commence in Karachi on February 19, with defending champions Pakistan facing New Zealand in the tournament opener.
As part of their preparations, Pakistan Shaheens played a crucial warm-up match against Afghanistan, posting a formidable 314/8 and securing a dominant 144-run victory.
Skipper Shadab Khan led from the front with an impressive bowling performance, taking three wickets as Afghanistan was dismissed for 170.
The Shaheens will next face South Africa at the National Bank Stadium in Karachi on February 17, while another squad will take on Bangladesh on the same day at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium.
Pakistan Squad for Champions Trophy 2025: Mohammad Rizwan (c), Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir, Faheem Ashraf, Khushdil Shah, Salman Ali Agha (vc), Usman Khan, Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Mohammad Hasnain, Naseem Shah, Shaheen Shah Afridi.

Kolkata to host South Africa Test
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced several key changes to the schedule and venues for the 202425 home season, including updates to the men's and women's international fixtures as well as the 'A' tours. The second Test of the two-match series between India and West Indies, originally set to be played at Eden Gardens in Kolkata in October, has been shifted to the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. In a corresponding change, Kolkata will now host the first Test of the India vs South Africa series - initially planned for Delhi - from November 14 to 18. In the women's cricket calendar, Chennai will no longer host the three ODIs against Australia scheduled for September. The Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) informed the BCCI of its inability to host the matches due to ongoing pitch and outfield relaying work at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in preparation for the 2026 men's T20 World Cup. As a result, the women's ODI series has been moved to New Chandigarh and Delhi. The newly built PCA Stadium in New Chandigarh will stage the first two games, while the third and final ODI will be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The series will take place from September 14 to 20. New Chandigarh was awarded the matches in part to compensate for its removal as a host venue for the upcoming Women's World Cup. In another adjustment, the three one-day matches between India A and South Africa A have been moved from the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru to the Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Rajkot. Bengaluru has been named as one of five Indian cities to host matches during the Women's World Cup, and it will stage both the opening game and the final - unless Pakistan qualifies, in which case the final will be played in Colombo, along with all other matches involving Pakistan. Furthermore, the BCCI's newly developed facility on the outskirts of Bengaluru, home to the Centre of Excellence, will debut as a first-class venue. It will host two four-day matches between India A and South Africa A from October 30 to November 10.

UAE captain Waseem named ICC Player of the Month
UAE cricket captain Muhammad Waseem has been named the ICC Men's Player of the Month for May 2025, following his outstanding performances in the T20I series win over Bangladesh. The International Cricket Council (ICC) announced the award on Saturday, recognising Waseem's key role in leading UAE to a historic 2-1 series victory - their first-ever T20I series win against a full-member nation. Waseem beat out strong contenders, including Scotland's Brandon McMullen and USA's Milind Kumar, to claim the monthly honour. This marks the second time the 31-year-old has received the award, having first won it in April 2024. "I am delighted to win the ICC Player of the Month award for the second time," Waseem said. "The month of May brought us a historic series win, and the award is a reflection of the team's hard work, especially the youngsters and debutants who showed incredible heart," he added. The UAE skipper was in top form throughout the three-match T20I series, scoring 145 runs at a strike rate of 166.66. He began the series with a fluent 54 off 39 balls, although UAE lost the opening game by 27 runs. In the second match, Waseem led from the front with a stunning 82 off just 42 balls, helping UAE chase down a challenging target of 206 - their highest successful run chase in T20Is. UAE sealed the series with a win in the third and final match, with Waseem being named Player of the Series for his consistent performances. Apart from his T20I success, Waseem also contributed in the ODI format, scoring 169 runs across five matches at an average of 33.80 and a strike rate of 90.37.
