He steered the Indian space programme gloriously for more than nine years as the chief of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), head of the Space Commission and secretary to the Government of India in the Department of Space, before laying down his office on August 27, 2003.

He was the project director for India's first two experimental earth observation satellites -- BHASKARA-I and II -- and subsequently, was also responsible for the overall direction of the first operational Indian remote-sensing satellite, IRS-1A.
Kasturirangan got his bachelor's and master's degree in physics from the Bombay University and PhD in experimental high-energy astronomy while working at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, in 1971.

He is credited with the successful launch and operationalisation of India's prestigious launch vehicle, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), and the first successful flight testing of the all-important Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV).
Defining India's most ambitious space-based high-energy astronomy observatory and initiating a related activities was also an important milestone under his leadership. Kasturirangan has made extensive and significant contributions to the studies of cosmic X-ray and gamma-ray sources and the effect of cosmic X-rays in the lower atmosphere.
He is a recipient of three major civilian awards -- Padma Shri (1982), Padma Bhushan (1992) and Padma Vibhushan (2000).
After being associated with the ISRO for nearly 35 years -- and heading it from 1994 to 2003 -- Kasturirangan served as a Rajya Sabha MP from 2003 to 2009 and concurrently, as the director of the National Institute of Advanced Studies.
Under the former United Progressive Alliance (UPA) government, he was a member of the Planning Commission from 2009 to 2014. He also headed the Karnataka Knowledge Commission in 2008.
The current National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government gave Kasturirangan the reins of a nine-member committee tasked with drafting the ambitious
National Education Policy
(NEP) in 2017. Prior to this, another committee was formed in 2015 under former cabinet secretary T S R Subramanian, but its recommendations had not panned out.
Officials at the Ministry of Education remember him as an "encyclopedia".
Kasturirangan was later also given the charge of the committee that drafted the new National Curriculum Framework (NCF), based on the NEP.
He was also a member of the boards of governors of various institutes like the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) Roorkee and Madras and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru.

Shubhanshu Shukla meets PM Modi; gifts tri-colour that travelled to space
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday (August 18, 2025) met Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, who became the first Indian astronaut to travel to the International Space Station (ISS). Mr. Shukla, who was part of the Axiom-4 commercial mission to the ISS from June 25-July 15, met the Prime Minister at his Lok Kalyan Marg residence. Mr. Modi welcomed Mr. Shukla, who was wearing an ISRO astronaut's jacket, with a warm hug and walked with him with his arm on the astronaut's shoulder. Mr. Shukla gifted the Prime Minister the mission patch of the Axiom-4 mission and the Indian tricolour that he had taken with him to the ISS. This Indian tricolour was fluttering in the background on the ISS when Mr. Shukla interacted with Modi on June 29. "Had a great interaction with Shubhanshu Shukla. We discussed a wide range of subjects including his experiences in space, progress in science & technology as well as India's ambitious Gaganyaan mission. India is proud of his feat," Mr. Modi said in a post on X. The Lucknow-born astronaut was also seen showing pictures he had taken from the ISS on a tablet computer to Prime Minister Modi. Mr. Shukla was part of the Axiom-4 private space mission that lifted off from Florida on June 25 and docked at the International Space Station on June 26. He returned to Earth on 15 July. The Prime Minister interacted with Mr. Shukla on June 29 in the initial days of the Axiom-4 mission that had docked at the ISS. He had also asked the astronaut to document his learning, training and stay at the International Space Station that would help India's future missions, including Gaganyaan. Mr. Shukla returned to India on Sunday (August 17, 2025). In a press interaction earlier this month, Shukla said that he had fulfilled the task entrusted to him by Prime Minister Modi to document every aspect of his mission for the benefit of India's upcoming Gaganyaan programme. "I remember very well the homework given to me by the prime minister. And I completed it very well. I am very excited to come back and share it with you all. I am confident that all that knowledge is going to prove extremely useful and crucial for us, for our own Gaganyaan mission," Mr. Shukla said on August 1. Along with three other astronauts — Peggy Whitson (U.S.), Slawosz Uznanski-Wisniewski (Poland), and Tibor Kapu (Hungary) -- Shukla conducted over 60 experiments and 20 outreach sessions during the 20-day Axiom-4 mission.

India's space research accomplishment on par with developed nations: ISRO chief
'With the success of SpaDeX mission, India has become the fourth country to successfully achieve docking and undocking in space,' said V. Narayanan, Chairman, Indian Space Research Organisation and Secretary to Department of Space, Government of India. Governor and Chancellor R.N. Ravi presided over the event and conferred degrees to the graduands. While addressing students during the 36th convocation of Alagappa University here on Monday, Mr. Narayanan said that India, from being behind many countries in space research in around 1950s, has risen to the level of competing with many developed and developing countries. Tracing the growth of Indian Space programme, he said that the first rocket was launched from India on November 21, 1963. Since then, India has launched 4,000 rockets and so far, the country has developed six generation of launch vehicles such as SLV3, ASLV, PSLV, GSLV, LVM3 and SSLV and has launched 102 launch vehicle missions. Further, he added that through intensive research and various experiments the life of satellites has been increased from seven to 15 years and through that, a total of 133 satellites were serving in various applications. 'Also, about 400 satellites from 32 foreign countries have been carried by Indian space vehicles,' he added. Mr. Narayanan referring to the success attained by the country in various domains since Independence, said: 'Movements like Green Revolution, White Revolution, Grey Revolution and Blue Revolution have also jointly contributed to making India the fourth largest economy in the world.' In various aspects like education, health and connectivity, the feat achieved by the country could be claimed as exemplary. The gradual growth of educational institutions starting from primary schools to institutions like Alagappa University to medical colleges have all played a key role in increasing the literacy level of the country from 12% to 79.7% in the last 78 years, he noted. G. Ravi, Vice-Chancellor, delivered the welcome address and recounted significant events, achievements, activities and programmes of the university that happened in the last year. All satellites functioned during Operation Sindoor: Isro chairman
1 2 Sivaganga: Stating that all Indian satellites worked perfectly during Operation Sindoor , chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (Isro), V Narayanan, said that the organisation has the responsibility to ensure safety and security of the Indian citizens. The satellites, 55 in number, will be increased to around 155 within the next three years, he added. Addressing the 36th convocation of Alagappa University in Karaikudi on Monday, Narayanan said, "Our astronaut Shubhanshu Shukla became the first Indian to reach the International Space Station (ISS) and land back on earth safely." He also said that India will have its own space station by 2035 and ensure human landing and safe return from the moon by 2040. Narayanan further said that the Gaganyaan human space mission is at an advanced stage and will soon take Indians to space and back using Isro's own launcher. Narayanan added that India became the fourth country to successfully achieve docking and undocking in space with the success of the SpaDeX Mission. Tamil Nadu Governor R N Ravi presided over the function and gave away the degrees to the new graduates. G Ravi, vice-chancellor, Alagappa University, welcomed the governor. A total of 43,163 candidates were conferred with degrees, of which 314 obtained their degrees in person. Out of the 314, one was awarded a DSc (Doctor of Science, and 133 conferred PhD.
