Sampdoria has fallen to the third level of Italian football for the first time in its 78-year existence. The club, based in Genoa, came 18th in Serie B after being held goalless by Juve Stabia on Tuesday. This catastrophic result happened only 34 years after their best accomplishment—winning Serie A in 1991.
The club gathered 41 points from the 38 games in a chaotic season. With only one victory of their last five games, Sampdoria couldn't avoid the direct relegation zone. Salernitana moved over them into the play-off for relegation position with a 2-0 win against Cittadella.
Managerial merry-go-round
The club's coaches were changed four times in the season. Andrea Pirlo had kicked off the campaign but was axed already after three games with two losses and a draw. Andrea Sottil followed, and Leonardo Semplici followed after. The last desperate measure to prevent the club from dropping into the second tier was made in April, with the club legend Alberico Evani being placed in charge.

Evani had one win against other strugglers, which were Cittadella. In spite of the presence of another club icon Attilio Lombardo as assistant, they could not rescue the sinking ship. The constant changes in the coaching were merely representative of the bigger problems at the club.
Financial crisis behind relegation
The propensity of Sampdoria to money problems has haunted the club in years. The 2024 accounts of the club recorded a loss of 40.7 million euros. They almost went bankrupt after they were relegated to Serie B in 2023.
The club was rescued in 2023 by the current president, Matteo Manfredi and the former Leeds United owner Andrea Radrizzani. Radrizzani has since left and is, since, owned by a majority Singaporean businessman named Joseph Tey. Even after a huge amount of transfer activity last summer and January, the team had difficulties in scoring goals throughout the season.
A fall from the European glory of Sampdoria
This relegation is a huge come down from a club that once sat at the very top of Italian and European football. Sampdoria only had its solitary Serie A triumph in 1991. They got into the final of the European Cup the following year but were beaten by Barcelona. They also scooped the UEFA Cup Winners Cup in 1990 and they also won the Coppa Italia four times.
The club had only spent five seasons out of four decades in Serie B until the month of August 2023. Now they are dealing with the brutal reality of third-tier football for the very first time in their lives. For the fans, the sinking of the club into the Serie C from European bliss is a new chapter in their proud history that hurts.

Iran Warns of Retaliation to UN Watchdog's Nuclear Censure

(Bloomberg) -- Iran warned it will retaliate following a decision by the United Nations atomic watchdog to censure the Islamic Republic over its nuclear program, deepening a crisis that's also drawn in the US and Israel. The International Atomic Energy Agency's board of governors approved a resolution in Vienna on Thursday that deemed Iran in non-compliance of its international obligations, setting up a potential referral to the UN Security Council for a renewal of sanctions. Iran will 'consider appropriate responses, including initiating the process of withdrawing from the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons,' Iran's ambassador to UN, Saeid Iravani, said ahead of the vote, according to the state-run IRNA news agency. The breakdown in nuclear diplomacy comes alongside a corresponding rise in regional tensions. The US ordered some staff to depart its embassy in Baghdad and authorized families of military service members to leave the region, officials said, while US President Donald Trump said he's growing less confident about the prospects for a successful deal to impose new limits on Iran's nuclear program. Iran warned it could hit US military assets in the Middle East if the talks collapse and the Islamic Republic is attacked. Oil prices rose the most since October on the mounting tensions, before paring gains on Thursday. Negotiations between Iran and the Trump administration have stalled over whether or not Tehran's engineers will retain their right to enrich uranium. The US and Israel have publicly insisted Iran can't possess that key technology — critical for producing the fuel needed for nuclear reactors and bombs. 'A comprehensive deal is likely contingent on the US allowing Iran to retain some domestic enrichment capacity,' analysts at the Eurasia Group wrote in a note this week. Iran has previously offered to end its ramp up of highly-enriched uranium in exchange for sanctions relief, after producing a record volume over the last quarter. That material could quickly be turned into the fuel for the equivalent of 10 bombs, should Iran's leadership take the political decision pursue weapons. The IAEA's vote was highly divided, with 19 in favor — led by the US and European nations — and three against, including China and Russia. There were 11 abstentions. Russian diplomats, who have been asked by the Trump administration to facilitate a diplomatic solution with Iran, cautioned that passing the IAEA vote of censure carries significant risks. 'The adoption of the presented resolution will significantly reduce the chances' of a diplomatic resolution, wrote Moscow's IAEA envoy Mikhail Ulyanov in a statement. Instead, 'such an escalation will have the most negative consequences both for the IAEA and for the entire non-proliferation regime.' More stories like this are available on

WEF Gender Gap Index 2025: Top 10 best and worst countries for gender parity

WEF Global Gender Gap Index 2025: According to the WEF Global Gender Gap Report 2025, the global gender gap has marginally narrowed in 2025, from 68.4% in 2024 to 68.8% in 2025, in 148 economies that were surveyed. However, the overall pace still lags behind pre-pandemic trends. At the aggregate level, high-income economies have closed 74.3% of their gender gap, slightly higher than the averages recorded in lower-income groups; however, the best performers in the three lower-income categories have narrowed a larger percentage of their gender disparities than more than half of the high-income countries. Notably, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Ecuador, Bangladesh, and Ethiopia have shown to be the most effective economies in overcoming gender inequalities across each income level. The top 10 economies in the Global Gender Gap Index 2025 have succeeded in minimising gender gaps by at least 80%. Iceland retains the world's most gender-equal economy for the 16th consecutive year, closing 92.6% of the gender gap – the only economy to reach 90% parity. European countries account for eight of the top ten rankings; Iceland, Finland, Norway, and Sweden have all been in the top ten since 2006. Source: World Economic Forum – The Global Gender Gap Index 2025 Rankings The bottom 10 countries in the Global Gender Gap Index 2025—led by Pakistan, Sudan, Chad, and Iran—continue to show the widest gender disparities globally. Source: World Economic Forum – The Global Gender Gap Index 2025 Rankings In 2025, India ranked 131st in global gender parity out of 148 countries, with a score of 64.4%, down three positions from the previous year. While it's way behind its neighbours – Bhutan (119th), Nepal (125th) and Sri Lanka (130th) – it saw an improvement in economic participation and opportunity. The score rose to 40.7%, supported by an increase in estimated earned income from 28.6% to 29.9%, while labour-force participation remained steady at 45.9%. In educational attainment, India scored 97.1%, reflecting gains in female literacy and tertiary education enrolment. Health and survival also improved due to a better sex ratio at birth and increased healthy life expectancy. However, political empowerment declined, with women's representation in parliament dropping from 14.7% to 13.8%. Cherry Gupta is an Assistant Manager - Content at The Indian Express. Oswal Pumps shares trade at 13% GMP ahead of IPO opening on June 13. Check key details

The initial public offering (IPO) of Oswal Pumps garnered significant buzz in the unlisted market ahead of its launch on June 13. Shares of the company were seen trading at a grey market premium (GMP) of Rs 80–83 in the unlisted market, denoting a gain of about 13% from the upper end of the stock's IPO price band. The GMP typically indicates the premium at which an IPO share is trading in the unofficial market before it is listed on the stock exchange. It reflects investor sentiment and expected listing gains, but is not officially regulated or guaranteed. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like War Thunder - Register now for free and play against over 75 Million real Players War Thunder Play Now Undo However, it should be noted that GMP is not always reliable. It is an unofficial indicator driven by market speculation and sentiment, and can often fluctuate sharply or diverge from actual listing performance. While it gives a rough idea of demand, it should not be the sole basis for investment decisions. Oswal Pumps price band The price band for the IPO has been set at Rs 584 to Rs 614 per equity share, with each share having a face value of Rs 1. Live Events Retail investors are required to bid for a minimum of 24 shares, amounting to a base investment of Rs 14,016. However, given expectations of strong demand, market experts are advising investors to apply at the cutoff price, which would raise the minimum investment to Rs 14,736. For non-institutional investors, the minimum application size is considerably higher. Small NIIs (sNIIs) must apply for at least 14 lots, or 336 shares, involving an investment of Rs 2,06,304. Large NIIs (bNIIs) are required to bid for a minimum of 68 lots, equivalent to 1,632 shares, with an investment of Rs 10,02,048.
