Brighton & Hove Albion vs Arsenal LIVE: Women's Super League latest score, goals and updates from fixture

Independent05-05-2025

The new Women's Super League marks the start of a new era for reigning champions Chelsea, with long-serving boss Emma Hayes having departed in summer to start a new adventure with the USA Women's team.
Last year they just about did enough to claim the title on goal difference ahead of Manchester City, while Arsenal will again hope to make it a three-horse race for the WSL title. Meanwhile Liverpool, Manchester United and Tottenham will hope to progress after further rebuilding this summer.
Crystal Palace were promoted to replace Bristol City in the top flight, while on a wider note, the league is now under the management and operation of a new organisation set up to lead women's football towards further growth and progression, with Nikki Doucet overseeing both the WSL and Championship in a new phase for the game.

Manchester United set to beat Arsenal to signing of £60million transfer target

Manchester United are in pole position to win the race to sign Viktor Gyokeres ahead of Arsenal and Chelsea. The Red Devils endured a season of almost unprecedented misery which culminated in their failure to qualify for Europe after losing the Europa League final against Tottenham in Bilbao last month. Despite the grim picture, United are confident of being able to spend significantly in the transfer window and arm Ruben Amorim with a squad capable of competing for a top eight finish at least. A deal to sign Matheus Cunha from Wolves has already been completed while a second bid for Brentford's Bryan Mbuemo has been tabled. United struggled for goals last season with summer signing Joshua Zirkzee showing only flashes of potential, while the previous year's headline recruit, Rasmus Hojlund, has been an unmitigated disaster. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Sign up to our newsletter and then select your team in the link so we can send you football news tailored to you. The Denmark international's future looks destined to lie away from Old Trafford with Inter showing genuine interest in a player who looked totally bereft of confidence at the end of last season. United will hope to recruit a readymade replacement for the former Atalanta striker and now, according to The Sun, are in pole position to sign Gyokeres. The Sweden international thrived under Amorim's tutelage at Sporting Lisbon and is keen on a move to the Premier League. With Arsenal making concrete progress in their attempts to Benjamin Sesko and Chelsea looking to follow up the signing of Liam Delap with the addition of Hugo Ekitike, the path is suddenly clearing for United to land Gyokeres. United, meanwhile, are understood to be confident that they can continue to strengthen their squad this summer after making reductions in the player wage bill and other cost savings. The club posted a pre-tax loss of £3.1million for the third quarter of the fiscal year in results published on Friday, way down on losses of £83.6m for the same period in the prior year. Gyokeres is a bunch of different strikers blended into one. He's a bulldozer, but he's also got that turn of pace and knack of finding himself in shooting areas. Some strikers, you can see they overthink things, but he'll shoot first and ask questions later. At 6ft 2in, he could definitely add an aerial presence to his game to take himself to the next level, but he's very good at using his chest as a magnet to win these aerial duels. He may not be as fearless as others when it comes to aerial duels, but he knows how to use his strengths to his advantage to hold up the ball and bring others into play. He's not someone like Roberto Firmino who is going to be dropping deep, so if Arsenal need to change certain things to get the best out of Gyokeres then they should. Zach Lowy, European football expert Total operating costs were down 20.4 per cent compared to the same quarter last year, driven by a reduction in the wage bill due to United's involvement in the Europa League instead of the Champions League, plus the January loan exits of the likes of Marcus Rashford and Antony. More Trending The reduction in costs was also attributable to the redundancy programme affecting non-playing staff, which began last year. Chief executive Omar Berrada admitted the club's 15th-place finish in the Premier League this season was 'below our standards' and said there was a 'clear expectation of improvement' next season. Changes in personnel seem certain to be required to achieve that and, while United insiders say the club intend to be disciplined about any investment they make this summer in order to remain compliant with the Premier League's profitability and sustainability rules (PSR), the reduction in operating costs alongside a 17.4 per cent increase in revenue does give them room for manoeuvre in the transfer market. Arsenal transfer news LIVE: Gunners ‘make contact' with Rogers, Rodrygo wage demands revealed, Martinelli exit possible

Isak tipped for Arsenal Jamie O'Hara has claimed that Arsenal should sign Newcastle star Aleksander Isak over Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko. He told Grosvenor Sport: 'The obvious position to strengthen for Arsenal is a striker – they need to get one in. 'They need someone big and strong who can get them 20 goals a season. For me, Kai Havertz just isn't the man for the job. 'Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyokeres or Benjamin Sesko are the obvious choices in the striker department for them. However, the trouble with strikers who come over from other leagues is that they fail to hit the ground running – particularly players from the Bundesliga and Liga Portugal. There's a massive difference between playing there and in the Premier League. 'I think clubs should be buying Premier League proven players who have been doing it week in, week out already. That's why I think Manchester United have been quite clever by signing Bryan Mbuemo and Matheus Cunha – we all know they're going to work for them. 'With that in mind, if I were Arsenal, I'd go and get Isak. I know it will be hard because Newcastle are in the Champions League, but Arsenal are a bigger club than Newcastle and could definitely tempt him.'

TEAMSHEET: Can YOU name the Leeds side that beat Arsenal 3-2 in 2003? Or pick YOUR team and guess their starting XI

Welcome back to Teamsheet... Mail Sport's original football memory game with a twist that gives you the chance to test your football knowledge against your mates. Today, we head back to May 2003 when Arsenal were looking to chase down Manchester United in the title race as they faced a struggling Leeds United at Highbury. Against the odds, Leeds pulled off a shock 3-2 victory to all but seal the title for United, while securing their own place in the Premier League for another year. But can you name the Leeds starting XI from that day? It's just for fun, so see how you fare and share your Teamsheet score... full instructions on how to play are at the bottom of the article and in the game itself. And you can also pick any team you like and guess their starting XI. Best of luck! HOW TO PLAY The aim of the game is to score as few points as possible! If you guess a player at the first attempt you score one point - so the lowest score for guessing every player at the first attempt is 11. Guess a correct letter in the right position, and it'll turn green. Guess a correct letter but in the wrong position, and it'll turn yellow. You have six guesses for each player - and if you fail, we'll reveal their identity for 11 points! You can also ask for a free letter, but it costs you a point. So play on to see if you'll score the best possible total of 11 - or fail on every player and score 121.
