Ex-Liverpool star who was humiliated in training changes his name

Daily Mirror13 hours ago
Liverpool's busy summer transfer window continues with the sale of young winger Ben Doak to Bournemouth, though the 19-year-old Scotland international now wishes to go by a different name
Liverpool have surpassed £200million in sales this transfer window, with 19-year-old Ben Doak departing for a fee of £25m. And the Scotland winger now wants to be referred to as Ben Gannon Doak after his Bournemouth switch.

Arne Slot's Reds continue to be active in the transfer market, with interest in Alexander Isak still rumbling and nearly £300m spent on the likes of Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Hugo Ekitike and Florian Wirtz. However, a large portion of this sum has been recouped through player sales.

Eight first-team stars have left Anfield this window, including Luis Diaz and Darwin Nunez, and another has now been shown the exit door in Gannon Doak. Yet, despite only going by Doak at Liverpool and on loan with Middlesbrough last year, he now wishes to be referred to by both his parents' surnames and leaves the club with fond memories, bar one training ground humiliation.

Gannon Doak arrived on Merseyside in March 2022 from Celtic as an academy prospect, with the Scottish club receiving compensation of roughly £600,000 for his transfer.
He made his debut under Jurgen Klopp in a Carabao Cup tie against Derby County and shortly after signed his first pro deal. Gannon Doak became the youngest Scotsman to play in the Premier League when he appeared against Aston Villa that December.
A knee injury would sideline him for most of the following season, but not before a lighthearted training ground embarrassment involving forgotten Reds midfielder Arthur Melo.
The Brazilian only played 13 minutes for Liverpool during his loan spell from Juventus, but in March 2023, he went viral for a piece of skill on the training pitch. Klopp's cohort were preparing for a clash against Manchester City, and initiated a rondo, with Gannon Doak doing the chasing.
Melo received the ball, and with Gannon Doak rapidly closing in, he silkily rolled it through his legs, nutmegging the young Scotsman and leaving him red-faced.

Gannon Doak's countryman, Andy Robertson, began crying with laughter after the feat, and team-mates Diaz, Curtis Jones and Nunez were also impressed.
The pair hugged it out after the nutmeg, though neither played any part in the subsequent 4-1 defeat to eventual champions City. Melo left Anfield that summer after a temporary spell riddled with injuries.
Gannon Doak, too, suffered from spells on the sidelines before his loan move to Middlesbrough in August 2024. Last November, he won the EFL Young Player of the Month award for bagging five assists in as many games.

Now, Gannon Doak has moved on permanently to the Cherries, where he's been handed the No. 11 shirt, and has opted for a new moniker on the back to reflect both of his parents' surnames. It has been reported that this deal includes a buy-back option for the Reds.
"I'm buzzing to be here. I feel like it's the right time for me and it's a great opportunity to play regular football at the highest level," said Gannon Doak after his move was announced.
"It feels like the perfect fit. The team play very nice football. It's fast and it really suits my game, so I felt like I couldn't say no to the chance to play here."

Having agreed a pre-contract deal to sign him from MLS side LAFC, the Gers got the deal done in August 2023 for £1.2million. But his time in Glasgow has been a nightmare. Finding starts hard to come by, he made just nine league appearances in the first half of the 2023/24 campaign. He was red-carded against Dundee in what is his last Premiership appearance to date. When Philippe Clement replaced Beale as Gers boss, Cifuentes' future was immediately in doubt. He joined Brazilian club Cruzeiro on loan in February 2024, but that deal was ripped up just six months later. That deal was ended to allow him to join Greek outfit Aris on a season-long loan for the 2024/25 campaign. Cifuentes impressed buy Aris didn't take up their option to make it permanent. Now, he looks set to move on. MLS insider Tom Bogert is reporting that Toronto FC are 'finalising a deal' to sign Cifuentes. It's claimed that it will be another loan deal for the player, running until the summer. Toronto will then have the option to purchase Cifuentes. More to follow... Alexander Isak and a 'nuclear' row with Newcastle - what next?

Alexander the words were splashed across the banner as Newcastle United fans saluted their talisman at St James' Park nine months that night feels like a distant remains determined to join Liverpool and the striker claimed that "promises were broken and trust is lost" in an explosive fired back just a few hours later and made it clear that "no commitment has ever been made that Alex can leave this summer."So what has irked Isak? What effect has the saga had on the dressing room? And can the striker really be reintegrated? The deal that never was Broken promises? This appeared to be a cryptic reference from Isak to the prospect of talks being held over a new contract last however, still had four years to run on his deal at the time and discussions were ultimately postponed due to the club's Profit and Sustainability (PSR) narrowly avoided a breach of the regulations in June, 2024 following the sales of Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton not only had to be careful in the transfer market thereafter but, also, when it came to dishing out a series of lucrative new contracts, particularly one that would make Isak the club's highest for context, have a tight wage structure and seven Premier League clubs spent more on salaries in clubs' most recent set of published a such a scare with PSR, sporting director Paul Mitchell, who has since left the club, vowed that "we need to make sure that we don't end up back there any time soon".This had a knock-on effect on Isak following a period of huge change at boardroom level after the departures of former sporting director Dan Ashworth and owners Amanda Staveley and Mehrdad would go on to hand fresh terms to Anthony Gordon, in October, 2024, but the club's hierarchy repeatedly stressed Isak's situation would be revisited this rather than wanting to sign a new deal, Isak has instead wanted out. Tight-knit group rallies Someone was missing as the Newcastle squad jetted off to the Far East last his absence was only was Isak a popular figure off the field - the Swede had long been a pivotal player on it, fact, Newcastle have been unable to win any of their last six Premier League games without Isak, failing to score in each of their last four despite having 75 shots (9.4 xG) across those six wonder morale took an initial hit - but a tight-knit group have since put in a committed display without Isak against Aston Villa on the opening day and there is a strong belief within the dressing room that that this saga could now even bring them closer previously thrived in such a set-up, of course, and it is worth noting that the striker has a number of friends at the club, including captain Bruno Guimaraes.A photograph posted on Bruno's social media account of the midfielder proudly wearing a Newcastle shirt was seized upon - just minutes after Isak's statement dropped - but this was not a response to his team-mate's incendiary words. "People are creating a situation where none exists," a source said. 'Gone about it in the wrong way' There has also been an understanding within the club that a player's career is short. Isak may only be turning 26 next month, but the striker wants to win the Premier League and the Champions those at the very top at Newcastle share those ultimate ambitions, it will take the club time to get there in a world of Profit and Sustainability (PSR).Liverpool, for context, spent more on wages (£386.1m) than Newcastle generated in revenue (£320.3m) in the clubs' most recently published accounts from Ferdinand "totally gets" Isak's desire to want to play for the champions if that is "something that attracts you".But another hugely popular Newcastle number nine - who scored 50 goals in his two seasons with the Magpies - stressed Isak had "gone about it in the wrong way"."If he had gone about it in the right way, perhaps, he would have left still being a hero of the football club," Ferdinand said. "There's a sour taste about the way he has done it after all his good work."That's the shame in all of this. He may go on and earn double what he's earning now and win loads of trophies and say, 'I made the right decision'. But, wherever you go, you want your legacy to be one of doing your best and leaving in the right way."I don't think football holds that tradition anymore. When a player decides he wants to go and a club that gets his interest comes in, it's 'let's down tools'." Could Isak be reintegrated? Newcastle have seen it from both sides, of as Isak is training away from the group on Tyneside, Newcastle target Yoane Wissa previously had a stint working on his own at identified Wissa as a potential replacement for Callum Wilson, who left following the expiry of his contract last month, and the club have had a fresh bid turned down for the DR Congo to sign one quality frontman has proved difficult enough for Newcastle - let alone an additional centre-forward like Hugo Ekitike, Benjamin Sesko or Joao Pedro, who chose to move two heavyweight strikers in the final days of the window feels a huge ask, but there is also something far bigger at play here, too. What sort of precedent would it set if Newcastle were to meekly wave off a player with three years left on his contract, especially to the champions?Newcastle have instead held firm - rejecting a £110m bid earlier this month - and the club do not foresee the "conditions of sale" being met before the window shuts on 1 that proves to be the case, could there really be a way back for Isak after the away end called the 25-year-old"greedy" and sang about him "not caring about us" at Villa Park last week?Thomas Concannon, a member of the Wor Flags group, who helped put together the Alexander the Great tribute display last season, has been left "bewildered" by Isak going "completely nuclear".But the Geordie, like the club, has not closed the door on the Swede being reintegrated."I don't think Newcastle are going to be able to find any suitable replacement at this stage," he added. "If anything, that's where Isak's frustration should be because there was a possible suitable replacement [Ekitike], but Liverpool bought him instead."I do think there is a way back because, ultimately, he has to play football. If he scored a few big goals, I think some would be willing to forgive. "He has burned bridges, but my personal opinion is if he scores some big goals and starts playing well again, that would go a long way."

Why Man Utd transfer for Emiliano Martinez collapsed despite Aston Villa agreement

Ruben Amorim's wish to bring World Cup winner Emiliano Martinez to Manchester United was reportedly thwarted by the club's board, as they would only sanction a loan move for the Aston Villa keeper Ruben Amorim didn't do enough to convince Manchester United to sign Emiliano Martinez over the summer, it has been claimed. Despite an encouraging performance in Sunday's defeat to Arsenal, United have something of a keeper crisis. Andre Onana has made a catalogue of errors since his arrival from Ajax two years ago, while Altay Bayindir has failed to convince in his fleeting appearances and was at fault for the Gunners' goal when he flapped at a corner. It's been clear for some time that United need a new stopper and Amorim is a big fan of Martinez, 32, who has played a key role in Aston Villa 's success under Unai Emery. Despite signing a new contract last year, the Argentine looked set to leave Villa after appearing to say an emotional goodbye to fans at the end of last season. At the time, Emery was non-committal over Martinez's future, merely saying 'we will see'. That appeared to leave the door open for a raid from United, who could have landed the World Cup winner for a fee of around £40million. However, United have reportedly seen an approach to sign Martinez on loan rejected by Villa. Amorim's plea to sign the player outright was not supported by the United board, which has instead backed the head coach with attacking signings Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Benjamin Sesko. Argentine outlet TyC Sports reports that a deal to bring Martinez to Old Trafford was 'very close'. They added that Amorim 'could not convince' the board to splash out on a keeper with Onana still on the books and would only sanction a loan move. Villa, meanwhile, had agreed to let Martinez go, but for only for the right price. While United appear to have made strides following their shambolic 2024/25 campaign, which produced the club's lowest league finish in half a century, their goalkeeping issues could undermine their progress. Following the Arsenal defeat, Amorim jumped to the defence of Bayindir, suggesting he could keep his place for Sunday's game at Fulham. Amorim said of the Gunners' goal: 'You're allowed to do a lot of things in the corner, we need to do the same. When you touch that way, the goalkeeper, he needs to use his hands to catch the ball, not push players, or he chooses to push players and let the ball past. 'It is the rules, it is allowed and we need to do the same thing. No (I'm not saying he should have acted differently), I am saying you choose to push a player or to get the ball. He chose to get the ball, but he's getting pushed, so he cannot defend it." Last season, Bayindir conceded directly from a Son Heung-min corner in a 4-3 Carabao Cup defeat at Tottenham, but Amorim rejected criticism of the Turkey international when asked if he had considered starting third-choice Tom Heaton against a team renowned for their threat from corners. Amorim added: 'He suffered a goal like this, where? Against Tottenham? It was without VAR. With VAR it was a foul. 'Then, in the next game against Arsenal, who saved the penalty? Who saved the game? You don't remember the game but I remember the game and Altay was unbelievable in that game. I considered everything to put in one or another and I chose Altay. I am happy with the three goalkeepers.'
