Pakistan: Authorities seize 18 lions kept as pets
Authorities launched a crackdown after a lion escaped from a house in Lahore, the capital of Punjab province, and attacked a woman and two children. The incident, which took place last week, was captured on video.
None of the people suffered life-threatening injuries, according to provincial officials. The lion, which was kept without a license in a house in Lahore, was confiscated.
The lion was sent to a local safari park, according to Mubeen Elahi, director general of the provincial Wildlife and Parks Department.
Police said the owner was arrested.
Keeping big pets considered a status symbol
Keeping a lion at home without following the legal requirements for ownership of big cats is an offense punishable by up to seven years in jail, Elahi told the Reuters news agency.
As well as confiscating the 18 animals, the department raided 38 lion and tiger breeding farms and arrested eight people for violating the rules, he said.
There are more than 500 lions and tigers in homes and breeding farms in Punjab, Elahi said, adding they would be inspected by the end of the week.
Keeping exotic animals is considered a status symbol among some wealthy Pakistanis, despite the high fees associated with ownership.

Punjab: Patiala man held on espionage charges
Patiala police on Wednesday arrested Gurpreet Singh, a resident of the Bhadson area in Nabha block, for allegedly sharing sensitive information related to the Indian Army with a Pakistani national. The accused has been booked for espionage. According to the police, Gurpreet had been 'honeytrapped' on social media. He allegedly provided an Indian mobile number to a Pakistan-based handler by sharing a WhatsApp activation code. 'The accused had been passing on sensitive information for more than a year. Our investigation is ongoing to determine whether anyone inside the Army cantonment was involved in assisting him,' the SSP added. However, Gurpreet's family has denied the allegations. His father Jarnail Singh claimed that his son is innocent and that his WhatsApp number might have been hacked.

'Congratulations to army, CRPF and J&K Police for successful Ops & eliminating three Pakistani terrorists involved in the heinous Pahalgam terror attack,' Sinha said. On July 28, three Pakistani terrorists, involved in the Pahalgam attack were killed in a joint, coordinated and protracted operation by army, J&K Police and CRPF. The terrorists were identified as Suleman Shah, Hamza Afgani & Jibran Bhai. Two AK series rifles, an M4 rifle and a large quantity of ammunition and warlike stores were recovered from the site. On April 22, as many as 26 people, including 25 tourists, and one local were killed when terrorists opened fire on them in the Baisaran meadow of Pahalgam. In response to the attack, India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7 to target nine terror infrastructure sites in Pakistan and Pakistan occupied Kashmir triggering an exchange of missiles and drones between the two countries till May 10 when a ceasefire was announced.
