New arts initiative in Dubai seeks to reimagine retail spaces

Khaleej Times06-07-2025
Home Centre, the Middle East's leading home retailer, has officially launched Home Centre Collective — a region-first live performance series that reimagines its retail spaces as immersive stages for culture, creativity, and community across Saudi Arabia and UAE.
The platform reflects a growing creative energy across the GCC — particularly in Saudi Arabia and the UAE, where investment in arts, music, and cultural expression is on the rise. Home Centre Collective was born from this cultural moment, designed to be an ongoing space where authenticity, art, and community can meet and live, in-store.
'As a homegrown brand, we've always felt a responsibility to support the communities we serve and celebrate the talent within them,' Arja Taaveniku, CEO, Home Centre said.
Excerpts from an interview:
Q: What sparked the idea for Home Centre Collective?
A: The idea began with a desire to reimagine our spaces - not just as retail environments, but as cultural stages. As a homegrown brand, we've always felt a responsibility to support the communities we serve and celebrate the talent within them.
At the same time, the world is shifting - there's a growing appreciation for Middle Eastern creativity, identity, and culture. That moment of global openness inspired us to act. Home Centre Collective is our way of giving local voices a platform to be seen, heard, and celebrated.
Q: How does this change the role of retail in the region?
A: Retail is no longer just about products—it's about purpose. Consumers today expect more than convenience—they want to connect emotionally with the brands they support. Through Home Centre Collective, we're reshaping what retail means in the Middle East.
By turning our stores into spaces for expression, collaboration, and storytelling, we're showing that retail can be a platform for cultural contribution. It's about inviting creativity in, not as a gimmick, but as a genuine part of who we are as a homegrown brand leading a new cultural movement in the region.
Q: How do you hope to impact local creatives?
A: We want to empower, elevate, and amplify. For us, it's about giving creatives the space, visibility, and tools to express who they are—on their terms.
What makes this initiative powerful is the collaboration. We're not dictating the narrative—we're co-creating it with the artists. We listen to their vision, work with them to build performance environments that feel personal, and help them show up in a way that feels authentic and culturally grounded.
Q: How do you choose the artists?
A: We look for voices that are authentic, expressive, and relevant to the communities we serve. What's important to note—especially in the UAE—is that 'local' doesn't always mean Middle Eastern. We live in beautifully diverse cities where cultures cross-pollinate, and we welcome that global energy.
So, whether it's a Khaleeji musician or an Afrobeat artist based in Dubai, we want Home Centre Collective to represent the full spectrum of creativity that exists here—globally influenced, but locally grounded.
Q: Do artists help design their performance space?
A: Yes—artist collaboration is central to everything we do. The performance space is not just a backdrop—it's part of the story. We work closely with each artist to understand how they want to be seen and how their identity can be reflected visually.
Even though the setup has to be practical from a retail and production perspective, we tailor every element—from styling to atmosphere—to feel personal and expressive. It's about creating an environment that's as much theirs as it is ours.
Q: How does this tie into interior design as self-expression?
A: Interior design has always been about identity. At Home Centre, we believe your home is the most personal space you can create—it's where self-expression truly lives.
What we're doing with Collective is an extension of that idea. These spaces may be temporary installations, but they're designed to reflect the creative soul of each artist—just like a home reflects the person who lives in it. And through those designs, we invite our customers to see how creativity and home are deeply connected.
Q: Are there plans to expand beyond the UAE and KSA?
A: Yes - our ambition is to grow Home Centre Collective into a leading creative platform across the Middle East. There's incredible creative energy in the region, and we see a real opportunity to celebrate and elevate that through authentic, locally-rooted storytelling.
As the region continues to shape global conversations around design, culture, and identity, we believe the voices and talent we champion here can naturally resonate beyond our borders - sharing a Middle Eastern point of view with the world.

Hans Jagnow talks about setting a gold standard for the future of sports and esports

The New Global Sport Conference (NGSC) has emerged as a nexus for innovation, thought leadership and convergence. NGSC has quickly grown into a powerhouse gathering of global executives, visionaries and creators, playing a pivotal role in shaping the future of entertainment and competition. We sat down with Hans Jagnow, director of NGSC, to understand the conference's evolution, its ambitious 2025 theme, and how it reflects the shifting dynamics of the global sport and gaming industries. 'The New Global Sport Conference has been around since 2023 and has been ever-growing,' says Jagnow. 'We started with a very exclusive platform with around 300 to 400 leaders that were coming together in Riyadh and celebrating the launch of the Esports World Cup.' That inaugural event laid the foundation, but it was only the beginning. With 1,500 confirmed guests and a nearly sold-out venue, the 2025 edition of the event is operating at full capacity. 'There's no space, which is probably the best thing that can happen to a conference a week before we are starting, right?' says Jagnow, highlighting the caliber of the attendees: 'We have hundreds of CEOs, key executives, presidents, board members and more.' What makes NGSC distinct is its format, a fusion of public stages, behind-the-scenes meetings, and cutting-edge activations. Jagnow proudly highlights new initiatives like The Foundry, a space for strategic masterclasses, and the NGSC Studio, a live broadcasting hub, which, as per Jagnow, is 'giving everyone out there a window into NGSC, into the topics that are discussed there.' The Next Game The headline theme for NGSC 2025 – The Next Game, serves both as a slogan and a challenge to the industry. 'Everyone is looking for their next game,' says Jagnow. 'What we want to focus on is how we can achieve our next game together, not only this next year, but also for the next five to 25 years.' This focus on convergence is embedded in every detail of the event, including its speaker lineup. 'If you look into our speaker lineup, there are some iconic names like Kideo Kojima, who is travelling with the acclaimed director of Drive, Nicolas Winding Refn. We have Ubisoft CEO – Yves Guillemot, Steve Bartlett and so many more,' Jagnow shares. But NGSC is not just about talks, it's about impact. Behind closed doors, strategic meetings are helping lay the groundwork for cross-industry deals. 'The incubator for that is our platform,' emphasises Jagnow. Accelerating the kingdom's vision Hosting the conference in Riyadh isn't incidental; it's strategic. NGSC plays a critical role in supporting Saudi Arabia's national gaming and esports strategy. 'Saudi Arabia is a unique place with a strong strategy underlying all its investments,' Jagnow explains. 'The NGSC as a platform is a direct accelerator of that strategy and of that ambition.' He emphasises the alignment with Vision 2030 and the country's broader goals of economic diversification. 'NGSC is a global platform to showcase the Kingdom's commitment, but also its capabilities,' he adds. Lighting the way for regional development The impact of NGSC isn't just global; it's deeply regional. 'The Kingdom shows through NGSC what are the innovations that you can achieve in the region,' says Jagnow. 'It shines a light on these markets in the Middle East and sets an example for others to follow.' He also underscores the practical benefits for local talent and infrastructure: 'It serves the fans in those countries. It enables games to be released and optimised for regional use. It enables a lot of events coming to the region.' Reflecting on the journey so far, Jagnow is visibly moved by NGSC's trajectory. 'It filled the gap of uniting the industry under one roof,' he says. 'This has always been our ambition when creating the platform.' And for him, the most rewarding moment isn't a keynote or a panel, it's what happens in the margins: 'The most rewarding feeling is quite honestly when everyone is standing in our networking area, having a mocktail and talking about what's ahead for them in the next year.' As the NGSC prepares to open its doors again, Jagnow has a clear message for attendees: 'The future of sports and esports is not separate. It's interconnected. Together we have the opportunity to set a global and a gold standard from Riyadh to the world.'
