Factory Worker Loses RM210,000 To Fake Investment Scheme Advertised On Facebook
The victim, known only as Chan, 47, said he came across the social media advertisement on March 26 promoting a high-return investment opportunity, which prompted him to invest.
He later contacted an individual named Linda via WhatsApp, who introduced herself as a remisier or investment intermediary.
"The investment seemed legitimate as I was instructed to download the 'Citi CDT' App from the Apple Store. The app verified, and I started by investing RM10,000 on the same day," he said during a press conference at the Perak MCA Building today.
Chan went on to make five more transfers between April 2 and April 28 via online banking, cash deposit machines and over-the-counter transactions to four different bank accounts.
Chan added that he was later informed he would receive returns of nearly RM1.7 million, but only if he made an additional payment of RM190,472.40, supposedly to release the profits.
"After checking with several friends, they told me I had been scammed. I then lodged a police report at the Sungai Senam police station," he said.
Meanwhile, Perak MCA Public Services and Complaints Bureau chief Yuen Chan How urged the authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the case.
'In the past, syndicates would use suspicious links to download fake apps. Now, they're developing legitimate-looking apps that can be downloaded from the Apple Store or Google Play.

RISDA Appreciates SPM Top Achievers Who Took Part In Its Tuition Programme
KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (RISDA) today recognised 884 rural students and children of smallholders for being top achievers in the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) 2024 through their participation in the tuition programme, Tuisyen Rakyat RISDA. The RISDA People's Tuition Appreciation Ceremony 2024, which took place at a hotel here, was officiated by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, who is also Minister of Rural and Regional Development (KKDW). As a token of appreciation for the students' hard work and fighting spirit, Ahmad Zahid announced the provision of a special incentive of RM300 to all students who achieved excellence in the examination. Ahmad Zahid said the implementation of the programme reflects the commitment of the MADANI Rural Aspirations so that no rural child is left behind due to location or background constraints. "I am confident that this effort will yield results. I am actually looking at future professionals, scholars, technocrats, and perhaps there is even someone in front of me who will become the Prime Minister of Malaysia," said the Deputy Prime Minister. CPO Futures End Lower On Weaker Export Performance In July

KUALA LUMPUR, July 28 (Bernama) -- The crude palm oil (CPO) futures contract on Bursa Malaysia Derivatives closed lower today, weighed by Malaysian palm oil's weaker export performance in July. "Meanwhile, AmSpec Agri Malaysia reported exports at 896,484 tonnes, marking a 15.22 per cent decline over the same period," he told Bernama. Palm oil trader David Ng said the CPO market closed lower on Monday due to concerns over expectations of rising output and weaker demand in the coming weeks. He said the market sentiment was also dragged down by a drop in soybean oil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT).
