Bill Dare: Spitting Image producer dies after accident abroad
Described as a "super producer" by his peers, Dare, 64, worked on eight series of hugely popular satire puppet show Spitting Image.
Airing on ITV during the 1980s and 1990s, the show delighted in lampooning public figures including politicians, celebrities and royalty, winning BAFTAs and Emmys. It was rebooted in 2020.
Dare also created Dead Ringers, a comedy impressions show broadcast on BBC Radio 4.
He also produced The Now Show, a satirical take on the news which ran on Radio 4 from 1998 to 2024.
Dare worked on a wide range of comedy shows during his career, including the radio production of The Mary Whitehouse Experience in the late 1980s and early 1990s. He had also written several novels.
In a statement released on Monday, his agent JFL Agency confirmed he died at the weekend.
A spokesperson said: "We are shocked and greatly saddened to have to announce the death of our brilliant client Bill Dare, who died at the weekend following an accident overseas.
"Our thoughts are with his wife Lucy, daughter Rebecca, and with all of Bill's family and friends who will be devastated by his loss.
"Bill was a truly legendary producer and writer, and his comedy instincts were second to none."
Colleagues were quick to pay tribute and reflect on his talent.
Impressionist Jon Culshaw wrote on X: "It's impossible to express the unreal sense of loss at the passing of the incredible Bill Dare. The wisest comedy alchemist and the dearest, dearest friend. Much love to Lucy and all Bill's family and friends. We shall all miss him more than we can say."
David Baddiel posted on the social media platform: "Just heard that the original producer of The Mary Whitehouse Experience on radio, Bill Dare, has died. Bill was an amazing creative force. I owe him much. RIP."
Former EastEnders actress Tracy-Ann Oberman said she was "devastated" and that her "entire comedy career was down to Bill".
She wrote: "When I was on the BBC Radio 4 rep company early on in career - I ran into Bill in the corridors - He asked if I was good at accents. I said yes.
"He cast me in a sketch show. I had to do about 15 different accents. We recorded in front of a live audience at Broadcasting House - afterwards Bill said 'Why have I never met you - you're going to have a big career'.
"He was incredibly loyal and supportive and really opened a path for me into the R4 comedy world and then TV having come out of the RSC and theatre it was all new. I will always be grateful. Fly high Bill."
Comedian and writer Mark Steel wrote: "This is so grim. Bill was a compassionate hearty soul with the ability to be beautifully grumpy, a marvellously thoughtful comic mind.
"He'd argue but always listen and you'd always laugh, he made a million shows and wanted them all to matter and would have made a million more."
Have I Got News for You writer Pete Sinclair said: "I am utterly devastated by Bill's death. I still can't believe it. He was a comedy genius. A hugely talented writer as well as a brilliant producer. A close friend and co-writer. I cannot begin to say how much I'll miss him."
Julia McKenzie, comedy commissioner for Radio 4, said: "I am so terribly sorry to hear this tragic news and my thoughts are with Bill's wife, family and friends.
"Bill has been a huge part of Radio 4 comedy for decades, as a writer and producer, and listeners will have heard his legendary name at the end of many of their favourite shows.
"Bill was a comedy obsessive, and very instinctive about making the funniest choices when it came to writing, directing and editing.
"He cared so much about his work that in the production booth during Dead Ringers you'd see him crouched over the script, utterly focused on the show.
"He was funny and very dry in person, amusingly cynical when he needed to be and always pushed to keep the comedy he made, and particularly satire, spiky.
"I've known and worked with him for 18 years and like many I can't believe he has gone, he will leave a big hole in the comedy world and in our hearts."

ITV drama based on true story set to show 'different side' to David Tennant
Doctor Who's David Tennant is set to star as journalist Nick Davies in new ITV drama The Hack. A fresh ITV programme is set to unveil a "completely different side" to Doctor Who icon David Tennant. The Harry Potter star is teaming up with Mr Bates vs The Post Office lead Toby Jones for a drama centred on true events. The Hack delves into the story of the phone hacking scandal at the News of the World newspaper, which was exposed in 2011. It also traces the investigation into the murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, who was killed in London in 1987. David will be stepping into the shoes of investigative journalist Nick Davies who unearthed evidence of one of the most significant and notorious invasions of privacy in the UK, reports Devon Live. Toby takes on the role of former Editor-in-Chief of The Guardian, Alan Rusbridger, while Trainspotting's Robert Carlyle embodies former Met Police Detective Chief Superintendent Dave Cook. The cast also features Rose Leslie, Dougray Scott, Eve Myles, Adrian Lester and Katherine Kelly. The synopsis teases: "Set between 2002 and 2012, the drama deftly interweaves two real-life stories, the work of investigative journalist Nick Davies, played by David Tennant, who uncovered evidence of phone hacking at the News of the World, and running parallel, the story of the investigation into the unsolved murder of private investigator Daniel Morgan, led by former Met Police detective chief superintendent Dave Cook, played by Robert Carlyle." The seven-part series is due to air this autumn, and has been executively produced by Adolescence writer Jack Thorne. In a new interview, he teased what fans can expect, revealing it was "a very, very difficult show to write". He told Deadline : "The Hack is a completely different side to David Tennant, an aspect of him that you've never seen before. It's Bobby Carlyle doing something very different, too. "It's about the phone-hacking scandal, but it's the phone-hacking scandal from the inside of it; it's two sides of the same coin that then reveal the truth of what was going on during that time. "You see them working out how to fight and it's really, really difficult. It was a very, very difficult show to write. "We were working with the Mr. Bates vs The Post Office lot, who are incredible researchers. Getting every detail right, and walking the legal minefield of the hacking scandal, was very complicated." David previously spoke about his "intense" role after The Hack was announced. Speaking on the Off Menu podcast with James Acaster and Ed Gamble, he said: "There's a lot of quite complicated information in that, you know. I'm playing a journalist who sort of broke the case open, and there's just a lot of quite technical stuff. "And obviously you have to be very specifically on that because there's a lot of lawyers watching to make sure you don't say the wrong thing." He added: "That was quite a long shoot and that was very intense. But you then do something like that and you're very proud to be part of something like that, it's one of the stories of our time that needs telling."

Stacey Solomon has been nominated two National Television Awards this year after her rant following her bruising defeat at the BAFTAs in May. 2026 will see ITV1 and ITVX launch a brand new strategic reality quiz as Emily Atack and Danny Dyer host a compelling new game show called Nobody's Fool. A co-production between ITV Studios label Lifted Entertainment and U.S.-based prodco Nobody's Hero, Nobody's Fool is a unique reality event packed full of drama and deception where the fate of the contestants isn't decided by how smart they are, but how smart their fellow contestants think they are. Ten contestants from across the UK will be selected to stay in a unique and mischievous 'Smart House', taking on a reality contest like no other. Rivals favourites Danny and Emily will preside over the action as the contestants must compete in challenges to convince others that they are more intelligent than they may actually be. They'll also take part in daily individual quizzes that will test different areas of intelligence in order to build a group prize pot. In a surprising twist however, only the contestants themselves will know how well they have done - what information they choose to share with their competitors is down to them. Across the series, the players must determine who is the weakest amongst them and eliminate them. As each of the contestants sets out to prove their worth and value to the rest of the group, can the players suss out who is a genuine asset and who is simply faking in a bid to stay in the game? The show aims to exploit preconceived notions about intelligence, playing on stereotypes and snap judgments to create a cast of characters who will keep viewers guessing.
