Graham Norton confesses he was overcome with emotion before 'secret' shoulder surgery as he was forced to confront his own mortality
Graham Norton has revealed he broke down in hospital before undergoing a 'secret' shoulder replacement earlier this year. The chat show legend, 62, admitted the moment left him unexpectedly emotional as he was forced to confront his own mortality. The presenter has so far been type-lipped about the reason for the major surgery, which left him in a sling for appearances at Eurovision and the BAFTA TV Awards in May. However, now speaking on the latest episode of his Wanging On podcast, Graham admitted that the magnitude of the operation caught him off guard and he was overwhelmed with emotion while waiting to be wheeled into surgery. 'I was sitting in the hospital room and I wasn't on any drugs or anything - it was before I was taken down - but you're in the gown and you just feel so vulnerable, and you're wearing those funny slippers,' he said. 'I did feel quite emotional. I knew I would, but you are facing your own mortality. You just feel quite vulnerable in that moment. I was surprised I got as totes emosh as I did.' The star also described in graphic detail the extent of the damage to his shoulder as he confessed: 'I now have a young bit of me. My shoulder's brand new. 'Sadly, there was no old shoulder left. It was all just ground down. 'One bit is plastic - it is a ball and socket - so one bit is now plastic, and [one] bit is porcelain but with a little bit of titanium stuck into the bone and a big long cut.' Graham said the surgery involved a dramatic incision that he compared to a shark attack, adding he got 'loads' of stitches. 'I mean, it's a big old I-was-eaten-by-a-shark kind of thing.' He also recalled a funny exchange with his doctor during a recent follow-up appointment: 'When I was at the doctors for the sign-off to get rid of the sling and everything, they did an X-ray. And he was showing me the X-ray, and went, "would you like to take a picture of that?" And I went, what for? And he looked hurt. He went, "well, people might want to see it".' Fans first noticed something was amiss when Graham appeared at the BAFTAs in May with his left arm in a black sling. Days later, he turned up at the Eurovision Grand Final without the sling but admitted on BBC Radio 2 that he was just two weeks post-op and still on a heavy course of medication. 'This is my left shoulder's first appearance on radio, (it's) a brand new shoulder. It's less than two weeks old. 'It feels a bit new, it's a little owie (painful), but forgive me, I'm on many, many medications right now, so if I say anything bad, it's not my fault!' The presenter did not elaborate on what caused his shoulder problems.

Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones split as he returns to dating app 'keen to meet other women'
Helen Skelton and Gethin Jones have 'ended their rumoured romance' after the former Blue Peter presenter was 'spotted on a popular dating app' Gethin Jones and Helen Skelton appear to have called it 'quits' on their rumoured romance, as Gethin has reportedly returned to a dating app. The popular BBC presenters have shared a close friendship for some time, which was believed to have blossomed into something more after they were seen leaving the BAFTAs together in May. While they never officially confirmed a relationship, the pair had been spotted spending time together away from work, including a recent spa day at a country club. But it seems the brief romance has fizzled out as Gethin has reportedly been spotted on celebrity app Raya while he enjoys a trip to Australia, where he's been watching the British and Irish Lions' tour with a group of mates, the Mirror reports. It comes days after a further hint that things were heating up between the pair when Gethin, 47, took to his Instagram stories to publicly wish Helen happy birthday as she turned 42 earlier this month. "Gethin is on the prowl Down Under which puts the nail in the coffin for his romance with Helen," a source told Mail Online. "He's there with pals but keen to meet other women. "There is no way Helen would stand for that if they were together and he has far too much respect for her to even go behind her back. Despite having an increasingly close connection it's cooled down significantly which is gutting for fans who really wanted them to be together." The pair have both endured heartbreak in recent years. Gethin's engagement to Katherine Jenkins was called off in 2011 and he's experienced a series of short relationships since. Meanwhile Helen separated from ex-husband Richie Myler - with whom she shares three children - back in 2022. Helen and Leeds Rhinos rugby player Richie, 35, had been married for eight years and had just welcomed their third child, Elsie, when they parted ways. He now has two more children with Stephanie Thirkhill, also 35, whose millionaire father Andrew Thirkill is the president of Richie's rugby club. Shocking her followers at the time, Helen revealed the devastating news of her split on Instagram as she shared: "Very sad to say that Richie and I are no longer a couple. He has left the family home. We will be doing our best to co-parent our small children." While writing her 2023 autobiography, In My Stride, Helen opened up about the heartbreak of her unexpected separation. She shared candid reflections on the emotional toll it took, admitting that the breakup came as a shock and wasn't something she had ever seen coming. She penned: "I was in shock. I know that following break-ups, people often say they didn't see it coming and it sounds like a cliché, but that was me."

Konnie Huq recalls 'mortifying' wardrobe malfunction at the BAFTAs in a glitzy dress: 'My boobs exploded!'
Konnie Huq has revealed a 'mortifying' moment at the 2016 BAFTAs when she suffered a wardrobe malfunction on the red carpet. The presenter, 49, who shares sons shares Covie, 14, and Huxley, 11, with husband Charlie Brooker, opened up about the mishap as she appeared on Fabulous' No Parental Guidance podcast. She explained that at the time of the awards ceremony she was breastfeeding Huxley, who was five months old at the time. Konnie confessed that as a result her breasts ended up 'exploding with milk'. She recalled: 'I would leave the house before the baby had woken up. I'd wake up at five, had to express milk, leave the house before I'd even seen the baby.' 'I needed us to finish early. And if we didn't, I'd sit there with my boobs so in pain.' She continued: 'I was once at the BAFTAs in a sheer dress. I remember having to go to the toilets and then stuff loads of, like, tissue in my bra - and actually squeeze my boobs. 'Thank God, the red carpet bit is first because I could see two stains on me - not a good look'. Konnie became an on-screen favourite when she appeared as a CBBC Blue Peter presenter. She met her Black Mirror creator husband during an episode of his show, Screenwipe, in 2009 and they became engaged nine months later, in June 2010. Previously, the Blue Peter star admitted that she pressured Charlie into having marriage and babies in the early days of their relationship. Konnie said she gave the TV creator an ultimatum so that neither of them wasted their time with one another. Speaking on Sophie Ellis-Bextor's podcast Spinning Plates in 2022, Konnie said she always wanted to have children and feared Charlie didn't feel the same, so the conversation and deal breaker immediately came up. 'I always wanted to have kids... I always thought I'd have three kids and then I had two and was like, ''I'm done now,'' she began. 'But weirdly, Charlie didn't think he ever wanted kids. So when we got together, I was like, "if you're not a having kids kind of person than we're not compatible" But it turns out he was.' 'But he is really good with kids which you might not think cause of his miserable alter ego, but Charlie is a lamb in wolf's clothing.' Speaking about tying the knot so fast after meeting each other, Konnie said that at the time, her 'body clock was ticking'. 'I was in my mid-thirties and when you're in your mid-thirties with your body clock ticking, you sort of think, "I don't want to be in another relationship without it going anywhere", she said.

The legendary presenter, 50, who presented Blue Peter from 1997 to 2008, exclusively opened up to Fabulous' No Parental Guidance podcast about a child-related wardrobe malfunction. Chatting to Louise Boyce and Hannah East on our brand new podcast, Konnie revealed how breastfeeding triggered not one - but two mortifying events. Listen and subscribe to our new No Parental Guidance podcast here... Konnie, who's mum to Covie and Huxley, now 13 and 11, says: ''There's two stories that stick out in my mind. Number one is boobs exploding with milk.'' The unfortunate but natural incident took place at the time when Konnie - who's married to Black Mirror creator Charlie Brooker - was presenting King of the Nerds for Sky. The show was filmed in Chelmsford, which is more than an hour's drive away from London, where she lives. As at the time one of her kids was just five months, the mum couldn't stay there overnight - and decided to wake up at 5am instead. ''I would leave the house before the baby had woken up. ''I'd wake up at five, had to express milk, leave the house before I'd even seen the baby.'' Willing to get back home as soon as possible, Konnie would try to wrap the show whenever she could - but that wasn't always an option. ''I needed us to finish early. And if we didn't, I'd sit there with my boobs so in pain.'' Konnie - who also presented The Xtra Factor - then went on to share the mortifying blunder whilst at the grand BAFTA TV Awards ceremony. Ferne McCann cruelly mum-shamed for breastfeeding her two-year-old daughter & others also spot 'massive choking hazard' ''I was once at the BAFTAs in a sheer dress,'' said Konnie who at the time was ''still breastfeeding''. ''I remember having to go to the toilets and then stuff loads of, like, tissue in my bra - and actually squeeze my boobs. ''Thank God, the red carpet bit is first because I could see two stains on me - not a good look,'' she chuckled on the podcast. What are the recommendations around breastfeeding? The NHS recommends breastfeeding your baby exclusively (feeding them breast milk only) for the first six months, but it's completely up to you to decide when you want to bring it to an end - and there's really no right or wrong way to do it. The NHS says weaning often happens gradually as your baby begins to eat more solid foods. They note that solid food shouldn't replace breast milk, as there is evidence to suggest breast milk helps a baby's digestive system when processing solid food for the first time. "Once they are eating solids, your baby will still need to have breast milk or formula as their main drink up to at least their first birthday," recommends the NHS. "Cows' milk isn't suitable as a main drink for babies under one, although it can be added to foods, such as mashed potatoes." You can also combine breastfeeding with formula, too and the NHS says "phasing out" of breastfeeding is often the easiest way. For example, dropping one feed in the day or at night time. After around a week, you can begin to think about dropping another. "If your baby is younger than one year, you'll need to replace the dropped breastfeed with a formula feed from a bottle or (if they are over six months) a cup or beaker, instead," they say. You can breastfeed for as long as you want, and while the NHS recommends breastfeeding your baby exclusively for the first six months, you shouldn't feel like you cannot continue for longer. The World Health Organization says: "Exclusive breastfeeding is recommended up to 6 months of age, with continued breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years of age or beyond." The bubbly trio also shared their thoughts on motherhood whilst being in employment. Mum-of-three Hannah said: ''Isn't it difficult? I used to present a lot of sporting events and I was breastfeeding. ''I used to take a mini fridge with me [...]. I used a USB cable, I'd plug it in under the deck - the sound engineer's decks - and I'd be announcing stuff whilst I had my breasts pumped. ''I was announcing the Olympics, all these footballers coming into the stadium, interviewing them, with the breast pump inside my bra.'' She went on: ''When you're working and you're at events, it's like you said, you can't just go 'Sorry guys, can we just wrap up? Cause my t**s are gonna explode here?' ''You can't do that, can you?'' Konnie replied: ''Absolutely. Still it feels so taboo. You just feel like you're gonna be really judged.'' Follow No Parental Guidance on YouTube here.
