Graham Norton confesses he was overcome with emotion before 'secret' shoulder surgery as he was forced to confront his own mortality

Daily Mail2 days ago
Graham Norton has revealed he broke down in hospital before undergoing a 'secret' shoulder replacement earlier this year.
The chat show legend, 62, admitted the moment left him unexpectedly emotional as he was forced to confront his own mortality.
The presenter has so far been type-lipped about the reason for the major surgery, which left him in a sling for appearances at Eurovision and the BAFTA TV Awards in May.
However, now speaking on the latest episode of his Wanging On podcast, Graham admitted that the magnitude of the operation caught him off guard and he was overwhelmed with emotion while waiting to be wheeled into surgery.
'I was sitting in the hospital room and I wasn't on any drugs or anything - it was before I was taken down - but you're in the gown and you just feel so vulnerable, and you're wearing those funny slippers,' he said.
'I did feel quite emotional. I knew I would, but you are facing your own mortality. You just feel quite vulnerable in that moment. I was surprised I got as totes emosh as I did.'
The star also described in graphic detail the extent of the damage to his shoulder as he confessed: 'I now have a young bit of me. My shoulder's brand new.
'Sadly, there was no old shoulder left. It was all just ground down.
'One bit is plastic - it is a ball and socket - so one bit is now plastic, and [one] bit is porcelain but with a little bit of titanium stuck into the bone and a big long cut.'
Graham said the surgery involved a dramatic incision that he compared to a shark attack, adding he got 'loads' of stitches.
'I mean, it's a big old I-was-eaten-by-a-shark kind of thing.'
He also recalled a funny exchange with his doctor during a recent follow-up appointment: 'When I was at the doctors for the sign-off to get rid of the sling and everything, they did an X-ray.
And he was showing me the X-ray, and went, "would you like to take a picture of that?" And I went, what for? And he looked hurt. He went, "well, people might want to see it".'
Fans first noticed something was amiss when Graham appeared at the BAFTAs in May with his left arm in a black sling.
Days later, he turned up at the Eurovision Grand Final without the sling but admitted on BBC Radio 2 that he was just two weeks post-op and still on a heavy course of medication.
'This is my left shoulder's first appearance on radio, (it's) a brand new shoulder. It's less than two weeks old.
'It feels a bit new, it's a little owie (painful), but forgive me, I'm on many, many medications right now, so if I say anything bad, it's not my fault!'
The presenter did not elaborate on what caused his shoulder problems.

EDEN CONFIDENTIAL: Will Fergie finally strike gold with 'eco nappy'?

Her quest for financial independence has taken her on a dizzying journey during which she's sold everything from fountain pens to food blenders, been an ambassador for Weight Watchers, published numerous books – both for children and, more recently, Mills & Boon romances – and co-hosted a podcast which promised that 'no topic is off the table'. Now I can disclose that Sarah, Duchess of York, 65, is embracing a new commercial adventure with enthusiasm and her trademark spirit. Fergie, who had two daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, during her marriage to the Duke of York, suggests that her age is entirely to her advantage as she immerses herself in a whole new world – as a producer of nappies. Not any old nappy, I should stress. 'I've created an eco-friendly nappy,' Sarah tells me. 'I think it's very exciting, being a grandmother, because the more grandchildren I have, the more urgency there is for compostable diapers.' The duchess is a grandmother to two girls – Beatrice's daughters Sienna, three, and Athena, six months – and two boys – Eugenie's sons, August, four, and Ernest, two. 'It's called the Greater Good,' Fergie says of the project, before explaining that the nappy is not exclusively her creation but one which has emerged from a collaboration with Dr Jason Graham-Nye and his wife Kim – once named among Fortune magazine's Ten Most Powerful Women Entrepreneurs. 'We have invented the first compostable diaper,' adds Fergie, explaining that it's produced in Samoa. Its capacity to decompose in 'compostable' fashion means that unlike most disposable nappies, often laden with microplastics, it needn't be dumped in landfill. 'There are 380,000 nappies changed a minute, so it's a really good solution,' says the duchess. Sounds more promising than media investment company Gate Ventures, of which she was a director. It lost an estimated £19million before being forced into administration in 2020. When he captured Prince William and Catherine's wedding, Hugo Burnand secured obedience from page boys by doling out sweets. But the society snapper quells nerves in adults in a very different manner. 'I ask them to say 's***',' he reveals on his podcast, Double Exposure, noting that it takes them 'by surprise'. Jamil's warning after being followed on walk The Duchess of Sussex's friend Jameela Jamil has issued a stark warning to women to be 'vigilant' after a group of men targeted her as she attempted to walk her dog in London this week. 'Some bloke followed me on his bike up and down the street, then when he realised I had clocked him, he got on the phone and called his mates who then came after me,' says the actress, pictured left. 'It was 8pm, in a crowded area, and I was wearing a black tracksuit and no makeup.' The privately-educated Londoner, 39, who previously lived in Los Angeles with her musician boyfriend James Blake, says she has been left with a growing resentment towards men. 'Many of my walks have turned into a nightmare. In a split second, a stranger decided it would be okay to destroy my life.' She warns women and girls 'not to be on your phone and keep one headphone out. Get number plates and registrations. Mistrust everyone and suspect every man'. One might think pending fatherhood would cure Levison Wood's itchy feet, but it appears not. The TV explorer, 43, who is expecting his first child with girlfriend Ana Protasio any day now, has set his sights on his next adventure. 'I'm hoping to head to South America this autumn,' he tells the Country Life podcast. Levison wants to explore the continent by motorbike, making it far from a family-friendly trip. Let's hope Ana understands. Diana's niece to wed after 10-year romance At long last, Princess Diana's niece Eliza Spencer is engaged to her tech executive boyfriend, Channing Millerd. After almost a decade of courtship, the model, 33, revealed Millerd, 31, who has a son from a previous relationship, went down on bended knee during a romantic trip to Santorini, Greece. Earl Spencer's daughter can be seen wearing the sparkler Miller proposed with in this picture she posted online. 'Forever and ever,' she wrote alongside the snap. A destination wedding could be on the cards for the pair, as Eliza previously said: 'We feel drawn to Italy, especially somewhere by the ocean – that feels so romantic to us.' Who says that an association with Pippa Middleton, the Princess of Wales's younger sister, doesn't come with benefits? Certainly not members of her local council who, I can disclose, have given Pippa and her husband, hedge-fund manager James Matthews, the green light to establish a nursery at Bucklebury Farm. The couple snapped up the West Berkshire property for £1.5million in 2020. The nursery – for children aged between nine months and five years – will deliver 'strong social benefits', concludes the council, noting that there is a local shortage of 'early years places'. The prospect of a smile from Pippa, 41, is likely to perk up fathers doing the school run, so it seems only fair to warn them that she and James, 49, live a few miles away at the Georgian manor house they bought for £15million in 2022. Strictly pro is fan favourite Nadiya Bychkova won the Best Female Personality Award at the National Reality TV Awards She has yet to win the glitterball trophy on Strictly Come Dancing, but Nadiya Bychkova is enjoying success elsewhere. The Ukrainian dancer, 35, won the Best Female Personality Award at this year's National Reality TV Awards, which took place at Porchester Hall in London. She tells me: 'It was a complete surprise to win the award. There were some big names on the list, so there was a combination of laughter, thankfulness and disbelief when my name was read out.' Bychkova, pictured, adds: 'I do feel very humbled that people have voted for me. It's really special to know that they have taken the time to do that, and it means a lot. 'Hopefully, I get the chance to add a glitterball to this trophy by the end of the year.'

Claudia Winkleman to host star-studded live Traitors experience for Comic Relief

The experience will give fans of the BBC One programme the chance to take their own seat at the roundtable for an evening of missions and murder, alongside a cast of former Traitors players and famous faces. Among those taking part are comedians Sara Pascoe, Nish Kumar, Ivo Graham and Rosie Jones, radio hosts Scott Mills and Chris Stark, and presenting couple Marvin and Rochelle Humes. Former Traitors, including season three alumni Leanne Quigley, Linda Rands, Jake Brown, Anna Duke and Freddie Fraser, will also take part in the game in London this autumn. Winkleman, 53, said: 'I'm so excited about this – a special evening filled with chaos, scheming and dramatic exits. 'The Traitors: Live Experience is going to be completely brilliant, and probably quite tense. 'The best thing about entering this prize draw is that you can help Comic Relief and raise money for all the incredibly important issues they support. 'So, if you've got the nerve, I'd say prepare your best poker face, trust nobody and I'll see you there.' The TV programme involves the 'faithfuls' attempting to banish the 'traitors', who murder during the night time, in order to win a prize pot of up to £120,000. During the live game, the traitors and faithfuls will discuss who they think is a traitor during the roundtables, which will consist of a mix of former Traitors players, a celebrity pair and the prize winners. The game will be followed by a drinks reception in the venue's Traitors-themed bar, the Cloak And Dagger. Radio 2 presenter Mills, 51, said: 'I absolutely love the show and can't wait to stir up a bit of drama at the roundtable, although I'm not sure how good I'll be at keeping a straight face. 'I'll probably get the giggles at precisely the wrong time. It really is a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and I hope lots of people enter and help raise money for Comic Relief.' Samir Patel, chief executive of Comic Relief, added: 'We're excited to launch this incredible prize draw, giving fans a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the drama and deception of The Traitors world first-hand. 'There's a fantastic, and very competitive, line-up of celebrities and former contestants waiting in the wings to take on our winners and I can't wait to see how it all unfolds. 'Money raised by the entries will help support vital work in the UK and around the world to provide essentials like healthcare and safe shelter. Best of luck to everyone who enters.' The Traitors has won various awards, including at the Bafta TV Awards in 2023 when host Winkleman won best entertainment performance. The programme is based on a Dutch format called De Verraders and involves contestants trying to identify and banish their killer counterparts, selected by Winkleman. Comedy duo Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders featured in a Traitors sketch for Comic Relief's Red Nose Day in 2023. The evening will be held at The Traitors: Live Experience in Covent Garden, London, on Monday September 22. The experience will not be televised but there will be video captured for social media use, the PA news agency understands. The event has been created by For One Night Only (FONO) and members of the public can enter a prize draw at to be in with the chance of playing the game. More celebrity participants will be announced in due course.

Zoe Ball devastated after trying and failing to buy Harry Styles' sex toy

Zoe Ball has opened up about rediscovering her libido post-menopause – and the surprising role Harry Styles nearly played in her journey. The 54-year-old BBC Radio 2 presenter, who co-hosts the Dig It podcast with fellow broadcaster Jo Whiley, revealed that she was intrigued by Styles' latest venture: a sleek, double-ended vibrator launched through his lifestyle brand, Pleasing. The device, which dropped alongside a companion lubricant, sold out almost instantly – much to Zoe's dismay. 'And I tell you what, if I could have bought one, I would have bought one and I would have given you a full report, but sadly you can't buy them anymore!' she told Jo with a laugh. Zoe, who says she's always had 'lovely chats' with the famously gracious singer, praised Styles' business savvy and design eye. 'He's got this company, and they've brought out a sex toy—beautifully designed and very stylish, just like Harry himself. A friend of mine was disappointed it wasn't shaped like his face!' Her curiosity extended beyond her interest in the pop star. After years of dealing with menopausal symptoms and a significant dip in libido, Zoe says things have started to shift – and her younger friends encouraged her to get back in the game. 'They said, 'Zoe, you need to get yourself this,'' she recalled. 'And honestly, the world of sex toys has changed so much.' She and Jo shared a few laughs over how to dispose of outdated devices ('I didn't put them in a skip!' Zoe joked) and swapped tales of rogue toys flying out of knocked-over bins. But the conversation kept returning to Harry's unexpected foray into sexual wellness. 'So apparently, the pinky bit is for external play and then the other end for internal play, which is also the handle. I have to say, I think he is a smart boy, Zoe said. 'The byline is, 'Please yourself like you mean it,' which I love.' The products – The Pleasing Double-Sided Vibrator (£51) and The Pleasing Lube (£19) – were developed in collaboration with sex educator and author Zoe Ligon. Ligon told The Times that Styles was 'very behind' the concept, wanting to thoughtfully enter the sexual wellness space rather than simply slap his name on a product. More Trending Styles, who launched Pleasing in 2021 with nail polishes and skincare, has now expanded the brand with what fans are calling a bold and body-positive step. The launch was teased with a trio of cryptic ads – glass milk slams, vibrating phones, Morse code messages – before culminating in a video of Harry scribbling 'Please yourself like you mean it' on a diner bill. Though the move surprised some fans who were expecting a new music drop, Zoe Ball thinks he's struck gold. And if any listeners manage to get their hands on one of the elusive toys? Zoe and Jo want a full review. Got a story?
