Justice league: Telangana HC issues notices over alleged irregular appointments to Wage Board
A bench of the Telangana High Court on Wednesday issued notices to top officials, including the chief secretary, principal secretary (Labour & Employment), Commissioner of Labour and two members of the Telangana State Wage Advisory Board, seeking their response within four weeks to alleged irregular appointments to the Board. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice P Sam Koshy, issued the notices during the scrutiny stage of a PIL filed by trade union activist Ganji Srinivas, who also serves as the general secretary of a labour union, seeking suspension of two GO — one issued on March 15, 2024 appointing B Janak Prasad as the Board chairman and another on December 12, 2024, appointing S Narasimha Reddy as a member.
Interim relief to Discoms in power supply shortfall case
A bench of Telangana High Court on Thursday granted interim relief to the TSSPDCL and TSNPDCL in a case related to payment of compensation for shortfall in power supply. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice P Sam Koshy, stayed the orders issued by the CERC, which had directed the two Discoms to pay Rs 179 crore for additional electricity supplied to the grid to compensate for power shortfalls. The court will hear further arguments after three weeks. Challenging the CERC directive, the Discoms filed a petition, arguing that the regulatory body has no authority to levy such charges. They contended that CERC's order to recover Rs 179 crore for compensating grid imbalances is outside its jurisdiction.

West Bengal records 12 pc YoY growth in GST collection for July: Mamata
West Bengal has registered a 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2025, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said on Monday, citing provisional figures released by the Centre. In a post on X, Banerjee said the state collected Rs 5,895 crore in GST revenue last month, up from Rs 5,257 crore in July 2024. "Glad to share that West Bengal has reported a robust 12 per cent year-on-year growth in gross Goods and Services Tax (GST) collections for July 2025, recording collection of Rs 5,895 crore, compared to Rs 5,257 crore in the same month last year, according to provisional figures just released by the Government of India," she said. "Cumulative growth rate in our state's GST revenue till the month of July is 7.71 per cent. This marks a steady improvement in business and consumption in West Bengal, which is a sign of good economic health," she added. Banerjee's remarks come at a time when her government has been highlighting economic recovery and resilience in the state following the opposition parties' allegations of economic decline in the state.

New Andhra bar policy prioritises health, 10% licenses for BC: Chandrababu Naidu
The Andhra Pradesh government will roll out a new bar policy starting September 1, with Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu stressing that public health and safety must take precedence over revenue a review meeting held at the Secretariat with ministers Kollu Ravindra, Kondapalli Srinivas, and senior officials, the Chief Minister made it clear that excise policy should not be treated as a mere income source. He underlined the need to reduce the harmful impact of alcohol, especially on the poor, by promoting the sale of low-alcohol-content new policy, drafted based on the recommendations of a cabinet sub-committee, will introduce a lottery system to allot bar licenses. A key feature of the policy is the reservation of 10 per cent of these licenses for members of the Backward Classes (BCs), similar to the existing reservation in liquor retail outlets. The state currently has 840 bars, and officials estimate that the new policy could generate Rs 700 crore from license and application ensure fairness, each license will require a minimum of four applicants. The license fee will be calculated based on the population of the area: Rs 35 lakh for areas with fewer than 50,000 people, Rs 55 lakh for areas with up to 5 lakh population, and Rs 75 lakh for areas exceeding 5 also briefed the Chief Minister about a surge in liquor sales near state borders. They said this was due to Andhra Pradesh offering all major liquor brands at lower prices and better quality compared to neighbouring states, which has led to a drop in cross-border purchases and illegal liquor also reported significant progress in cracking down on illicit liquor. So far, 12 districts have been declared completely free of Illicitly Distilled (ID) liquor. Goa cracks down on litterbugs: New garbage bill aims to keep tourist areas clean; fines up to Rs 3 lakh
PORVORIM : The House passed the crucial Goa NonBiodegradable Garbage (Control) (Amendment) Bill, which has provision to penalise people caught littering not just public spaces, but private ones too. The bill facilitates a fine of Rs 300 for the first offence, with subsequent offences attracting fines of up to Rs 3 lakh. Opposition leader Yuri Alemao asked why imprisonment as a deterrent was not included in the amendment bill. It was passed after a brief discussion on provisions, and with amendments suggested by Curchorem MLA Nilesh Cabral. The House also passed the Goa Tax on Infrastructure (Amendment) Bill, introduced by TCP minister Vishwajit Rane, which aims to make payment of infrastructure tax by builders and developers easier. Opposition MLAs questioned govt's intent in allowing payments in two installments. To the point raised by Fatorda MLA Vijai Sardesai on whether similar benefits will be extended to Goans for constructing their houses, the CM said such a law is in the pipeline. Passing of the Goa Public Universities Bill, with a provision to facilitate setting up of multi-disciplinary universities was deferred till Friday following Opposition members' demands that the bill be sent to the select committee.
