Vietnam police detain man who broke armrest of ancient Nguyen dynasty throne at Unesco-listed Hue palace
The ornate red-and-gold Nguyen dynasty throne was the royal seat of the last feudal family to rule Vietnam between 1802 and 1945 and has been preserved for posterity in Hue city's Thai Hoa Palace.
A 42-year-old man 'snuck into the Nguyen dynasty display area, screamed and then broke the front left armrest' around midday on Saturday, a statement from the Hue Monuments Conservation Centre (HMCC) said.
In footage circulating on social media and Vietnam news sites purporting to show the incident, the man can be seen sitting cross-legged on the two-century-old throne that is adorned with dragon motifs.
He was quickly arrested but showed 'signs of psychosis, screaming, talking nonsense and could not answer the investigator's questions', the HMCC said.
Police detained him to conduct a psychiatric assessment, it said, while the throne will be removed for repair and preservation efforts.
'This is an extremely rare incident,' the HMCC statement said.
Vietnam's ministry of culture, sports and tourism has asked for an urgent report on the incident.
The central city of Hue was established as the capital of unified Vietnam under the Nguyen dynasty.
It was recognised as a world heritage site by Unesco in 1993 and hosts several ancient palaces, tombs and artefacts. — AFP

The officers found 1.4 kilograms of cocaine inside a sex toy hidden in her genitals and in her underwear. Police also accused her of smuggling dozens of ecstasy pills. The Peruvian woman told the police she was hired to transport the drugs to Indonesia by a man she met on the dark web in April in return for US$20,000 (RM84,470), said Radiant. The woman has been charged under Indonesia's harsh narcotics law and could face the death penalty if found guilty. Last month, a Bali court sentenced a 46-year-old Argentine to seven years in prison after she was found guilty of smuggling 244 grams of cocaine wrapped with a condom that she hid inside her genitals. Indonesia has some of the world's toughest drug laws. There are dozens of traffickers on death row in the country, including a cocaine-smuggling British grandmother. Indonesia last carried out executions in 2016, killing one Indonesian and three Nigerian drug convicts by firing squad. — AFP

Police remands 51-year-old man over TikTok video claiming Zara Qairina's death was murder
KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 19 — Police have remanded a 51-year-old man from August 19 to 21 for allegedly spreading false information on TikTok about the death of student Zara Qairina. The suspect, believed to be behind the account @berjuanguntukzara, was arrested on Monday night. Police also seized a mobile phone said to have been used in the case. The video in question, titled 'Revealing Zara's post-mortem findings', went viral on August 15 and contained an audio recording that described her death as a planned murder. Police said the two-minute clip misrepresented the facts of the ongoing investigation. Police said the case is being investigated under the Sedition Act 1948, Section 505(b) of the Penal Code for statements likely to cause public alarm, and Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998 for misuse of network services. The Attorney General's Chambers has already decided that an inquest will be held into Zara's death, police added. Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar urged the public not to spread rumours or manipulate facts that could cause fear, disrupt court proceedings or jeopardise investigations. 'Firm action will be taken against anyone found deliberately spreading false information,' he said. Police also reminded the public to verify the accuracy of information found on social media, especially on issues concerning security, harmony and national unity.

Police probe bullying claim at Melaka boarding school

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : Police are investigating an alleged case of bullying involving two senior students at a boarding school in Sungai Udang, Melaka. The media had reported that more than 20 Form 3 female students were apparently forced to do the 'duck walk' for 30 minutes and perform squats while pulling their ears as punishment for returning late to their dormitory last Saturday. Melaka Tengah police chief Christopher Patit said the matter is being investigated under Section 323 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt, reported Bernama. 'We are waiting for the medical report as the complainant said her legs were injured due to the punishment,' he said. State education, higher education and religious affairs committee chairman Rahmad Mariman said the students had no authority to discipline their peers. He said the state viewed the incident seriously as it concerned the safety and welfare of students. Rahmad added that the state and district education offices would take a firm stance on bullying and urged schools to strengthen supervision and preventive measures.
