Kenyan police officers arraigned over shooting a civilian during protests

AP image NAIROBI: A court in Kenya on Thursday gave detectives 15 days to complete investigations of two police officers suspected of shooting and wounding a hawker during the latest street protests over the death of a blogger in custody. The officers were arraigned in court two days after the Tuesday shooting on a busy street and under the full glare of cameras. It triggered anger and fury over persistent complaints against police brutality. Tuesday's protests in the capital followed tensions over the death of the blogger, Albert Ojwang, who was found dead while in custody at the central police station. Ojwang was arrested on June 6 in western Kenya for what police called publishing "false information" about a top police official on social media. Police attributed his death to him "hitting his head against the cell wall," but activists have questioned the cause of death. Protesters on Tuesday demanded the arrest of the police deputy inspector general, Eliud Langat, who had filed a defamation complaint against Ojwang. Langat said Monday he had stepped aside and would cooperate with investigators. The two officers at the central police station were arrested last week. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Giao dịch CFD với công nghệ và tốc độ tốt hơn IC Markets Đăng ký Undo The officers will remain in custody until July 3. During their court appearance, they concealed their faces with masks, sparking complaints from activists. Kenya has a history of police brutality, and President William Ruto previously vowed to end it, along with extrajudicial killings. Last year, several activists and protesters were abducted and killed by Kenyan police during protests against tax hikes. The demonstrations led to calls for Ruto's removal.

Israel-Iran conflict: On call, Putin, Xi term West Asia 'top priority'; condemn Israeli strikes

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin (File photo) Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping "strongly condemned" Israeli aerial strikes on Iran, urging both parties to "end hostilities through diplomatic means". "Parties to the conflict, especially Israel, should cease hostilities as soon as possible to prevent a cyclical escalation and resolutely avoid the spillover of the war," Xi said, reported news agency AFP citing Xinhua. Kremlin aide Yuri Ushakov told reporters that "Both sides adhere to identical approaches, strongly condemn Israel's actions." Xi and Putin also acknowledged in the call that cessation of hostilities in West Asia was the "top priority". "Promoting a ceasefire and cessation of hostilities is the top priority. Armed force is not the correct way to resolve international disputes," Xi said, according to Xinhua. The talks between the two leaders come as the West Asian region continues to boil amid escalating kinetic actions between the Jewish state and Tehran. In an out-of-proportion retaliation, an Iranian missile on Thursday struck the Soroka Hospital in southern Israel. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo "Several hits were identified as a result of the missile barrage--one of them hitting the largest hospital in southern Israel. More details will follow," IDF said in a statement. Soon after the attack, the Israeli defence minister issued a chilling remark against Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Khamenei, vowing his elimination for the first time out in the open since the conflict. "Khamenei openly declares that he wants Israel destroyed -- he personally gives the order to fire on hospitals. He considers the destruction of the state of Israel to be a goal," Israeli defence minister Israel Katz told AFP in Holon near Tel Aviv. "Such a man can no longer be allowed to exist," he added. Israel earlier launched a deadly strike on Iran's Arak heavy water reactor, intensifying a conflict that has now raged for seven straight days. Before the assault, Israel issued a severe warning via social media, posting satellite images with the targeted facility circled in red and urging civilians to flee the area, a clear message of what was to come. The clash has spiralled into one of the most aggressive military face-offs between the two nations in recent history. Iranian state media reported fresh missile barrages aimed at Tel Aviv, with Fars News Agency describing the rockets as "roaring over" the heart of Israel's commercial capital. The toll on both sides has been devastating. Iranian strikes have killed at least 24 people in Israel and left hundreds injured, with several missiles slamming into residential buildings in central cities. In response, Israeli forces have pounded key Iranian nuclear sites and military strongholds, reportedly inflicting hundreds of casualties and causing widespread destruction. The region now appears to be teetering on the edge of a much broader war.

Thai PM apologises as crisis threatens to topple government

Thai PM apologises as crisis threatens to topple government (Image: AP) BANGKOK: Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra apologised on Thursday for a leaked phone call with former Cambodian leader Hun Sen that has provoked widespread anger and put her government on the brink of collapse. Her main coalition partner has quit and she faces calls to resign or hold an election, throwing the kingdom into a fresh round of political instability as it seeks to boost its spluttering economy and avoid US President Donald Trump's swingeing trade tariffs. T he conservative Bhumjaithai party pulled out on Wednesday, saying Paetongtarn's conduct in the leaked call had wounded the country and the army's dignity. As pressure grew on Thursday, Paetongtarn apologised at a news conference alongside military chiefs and senior figures from her Pheu Thai party. "I would like to apologise for the leaked audio of my conversation with a Cambodian leader which has caused public resentment," Paetongtarn told reporters. The 38-year-old is the daughter of billionaire Thaksin Shinawatra, Thailand's most influential but controversial modern politician. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Buy Brass Idols - Handmade Brass Statues for Home & Gifting Luxeartisanship Buy Now Undo Paetongtarn is heard in the call discussing an ongoing border dispute with Hun Sen, who still holds wide powers in Cambodia despite leaving office in 2023. She addresses the veteran leader as "uncle" and refers to the Thai army commander in the country's northeast as her opponent, a remark that sparked fierce criticism on social media. The Thai foreign ministry summoned the Cambodian ambassador on Thursday to deliver a letter complaining about the leaking of the call. The loss of Bhumjaithai's 69 MPs left Paetongtarn with barely enough votes to scrape a majority in parliament and a snap election looks a clear possibility -- barely two years after the last one in May 2023. Two other coalition parties, the United Thai Nation and the Democrat Party, will hold meetings to discuss the situation later Thursday. Paetongtarn will be hoping her apology and public show of unity with the military are enough to persuade them to stay on board. Losing either would likely mean the end of her government and either an election or a bid by other parties to stitch together a new coalition. Resignation calls Thailand's military said in a statement that army chief General Pana Claewplodtook "affirms commitment to democratic principles and national sovereignty protection". "The Chief of Army emphasised that the paramount imperative is for 'Thai people to stand united' in collectively defending national sovereignty," it said. Thailand's armed forces have long played a powerful role in the kingdom's politics and politicians are usually careful not to antagonise them. Thailand has suffered a dozen coups since the end of absolute monarchy in 1932, and the current crisis has inevitably triggered rumours that another may be in the offing. Such an outcome would make Paetongtarn the third member of her family, after her aunt Yingluck and father Thaksin, to be kicked out of office by the military. The main opposition People's Party, which won the most seats in 2023 but was blocked by conservative senators from forming a government, urged Paetongtarn to call an election. "What happened yesterday was a leadership crisis that destroyed people's trust," People's Party leader Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut said in a statement. The Palang Pracharath party, which led the government up to 2023, said the leaked recording showed Paetongtarn was weak and inexperienced, incapable of managing the country's security. Hundreds of anti-government protesters, some of them veterans of the royalist, anti-Thaksin "Yellow Shirt" movement of the late 2000s, demonstrated outside Government House on Thursday demanding that Paetongtarn quit. Awkward coalition Paetongtarn came to power in August 2024 at the head of an uneasy coalition between Pheu Thai and a group of conservative, pro-military parties whose members have spent much of the past 20 years battling against her father. Growing tensions within the coalition erupted into open warfare in the past week as Pheu Thai tried to take the interior minister's job away from Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul. The battle between the conservative pro-royal establishment and Thaksin's political movement has dominated recent Thai politics. Former Manchester City owner Thaksin, 75, still enjoys huge support from the rural base whose lives he transformed with populist policies in the early 2000s. But he is despised by Thailand's powerful elites, who saw his rule as corrupt, authoritarian and socially destabilising.
