Diddy trial shows society doesn't care about women's suffering

Daily Mirror3 days ago
He's a man known by many names: Diddy; Puff Daddy; Puffy; Sean Combs; and now a convicted criminal. His music was ubiquitous with the 2000s, collaborating with some of the biggest names in pop, from Christina Aguilera to Justin Bieber. His Bad Boy Record label brought artists such as Janelle Monáe and Machine Gun Kelly to the world. But now, after two months on trial his fame should pale in significance to the crimes he committed.
Over a period of eight weeks, a jury at Manhattan's Federal Court in New York City heard the case against Sean Combs. He was tried on two counts of transportation for prostitution in relation to Cassie Ventura and another woman known as 'Jane', as well as two charges of sex trafficking with regards to Ventura and 'Jane', and one charge of racketeering conspiracy.
On June 6, he was found guilty on both counts of transportation for prostitution, and not guilty on the other three charges. Combs denied all allegations against him and pleaded not guilty to all charges.
This case has garnered significant attention, not least from the media and fans alike. A fan outside the court wore a T-shirt that read 'A Freako is not a R.I.C.O'.
The so-called 'Freak-offs' are drug-fuelled, days-long sex parties, where hundreds of bottles of baby oil seized from Diddy's Los Angeles home became an emblem for the excess and distress. The Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act has been used in the past to tackle criminal organisations, most notably in 1985 when Rudy Giuliani charged the heads of the so-called 'Five Families' of the New York Mafia.
But where do we go from the news that one of the most recognisable men in music is dangerous? In May 2024 leaked surveillance footage from 2016, showed the world how Diddy brutally assaulted his then girlfriend Cassie Ventura at the InterContinental Hotel in L.A . In a response on Instagram, Diddy described his 'behaviour as inexcusable.' The footage is difficult to watch: what I see is a woman in a moment of desperate hope trying to flee her abuser.
But I'm not convinced that everybody sees this pain in the way I do. The video is right there for all to see, but yet the era of disinformation has equipped some with the ability to think: 'Well, maybe we're not getting the whole story here'.
Ignorance is the best case scenario for those who waited outside the Diddy court holding bottles of baby oil, rooting for his imminent release. But at worst, I think that fundamentally these people don't care about how women are treated.
Heavily pregnant and weeping on the stand, Ventura told the court about her relationship with Diddy. She told the court about being plied with drugs and coerced into having sex with male prostitutes - which was sometimes recorded by Diddy.
This was not the first public declaration by Cassie about Diddy's abuse. In 2023, the singer went public with allegations of rape and abuse that she suffered from Diddy. The media mogul settled this case out of court for $20million. Reading her testimony from the 2025 trial, the resilience to carry on in the hope of justice is inspiring.
In a move that is both insensitive to survivors and out of touch with the testimony that came before, Diddy's defence lawyer Marc Agnifilo in closing arguments on June 27, described their relationship as a "great modern love story". He said: "It's complicated, but they are truly in love with each other, and that is what defines their relationship. It is based on love."
Love should not result in bruises, split lips, and non-consensual sex. Love should not hurt. This is not a modern love story; this is a nightmare that plays out for far too many women. The National Centre for Domestic Violence defines domestic abuse as ranging from physical and sexual abuse to threatening or coercive behaviour. They report that 1 in 4 women will be a victim of domestic abuse in their lifetime.
When the verdict was read out in court, Diddy buckled with relief. His legal team put in a request for bail pending sentencing, which was denied. He remains behind bars until the proposed sentencing date of October 3. The New York Times reported that when this decision was handed down by Judge Arun Subramanian his jubilance turned to a 'darkened demeanour'.
Outside the court Ventura's lawyer, Douglas H. Wigdor praised the singer for her bravery, saying: "She displayed unquestionable strength and brought attention to the realities of powerful men in our orbit and the misconduct that has persisted for decades without repercussion. This case proved that change is long overdue, and we will continue to fight on behalf of survivors."
But orbits are not eternal, and will eventually decay away, dropping stars out of alignment. Survivors will be the change-makers, as they continue to come forward and advocate for future women's safety. It is what we must do to ensure that powerful men cannot commit crimes unhindered.

Beyoncé keeps silent on shock Diddy verdict as she instead posts razzle-dazzle Cowboy Carter tour snaps

Beyonce treated her fans to a suite of concert photos on the Fourth of July - but kept her ongoing silence on the Diddy verdict. The 43-year-old and her husband Jay-Z, 55, are longtime friends with Diddy, but they both stayed mum in public after allegations of sexual misconduct were leveled against the rap mogul and numerous lawsuits were filed against him. However Jay-Z was pulled into the controversy late last year when an anonymous woman filed a lawsuit against him and Diddy in which she accused both of raping her in 2000 — when she was only 13 — at an afterparty for the MTV Video Music Awards. Jay-Z denied any connection to the woman and said the lawsuit was a 'blackmail attempt' in a blistering response, and she ultimately withdrew the lawsuit in February. This week, Diddy was acquitted of the most serious charges against him- sex trafficking and racketeering - while being convicted of two lesser charges of transportation to engage in prostitution. Beyoncé did not address the issue to her fans this week, and instead celebrated America's Independence Day Friday night in glamour as she rocked a red, white and blue look onstage near Washington, DC. The superstar dazzled in a stars-and-stripes bodysuit and a fur coat for her Cowboy Carter tour stop at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland. For her first of two nights in the city, right outside of Washington, DC, she painted the stage red, white and blue with imagery of the American flag. The 32-time Grammy winner — who was last visiting France with Jay-Z and their 13-year-old daughter Blue Ivy during Paris Fashion Week — had her backup dancers and her stage as well as the crowded stadium matching in the same colors for the national holiday. After her performance, she took to Instagram to share photos of her stunning Independence Day look. In several snaps sans caption, she posed with a bedazzled bottle of Armand de Brignac Ace of Spades champagne, which is owned by her music mogul husband and LVMH. For most of her show, she rocked a sheer, blue bodysuit with long-sleeves and a bullet bra-inspired silhouette with silver stars on the bust. In addition to her sequined, blue bodysuit covered in stars, she also sported silver, over-the-knee boots with fringe paired with a matching rhinestoned cowboy hat. At one point, the Texas native also shed the fur coat and strutted along the stage in her on-theme, holiday outfit. She styled her long, luscious blonde hair in a bouncy blowout with voluminous curls framing her face. She smoldered in a sultry, dark brown makeup look featuring a smoky eye and a matte, nude lip. Beyoncé's husband has a long history of artistic collaborations with Diddy, going back to 1997, when both artists traded guest verses on each other's albums. Jay rapped a verse on Diddy's song Do You Like It, Do You Want It, while the future mogul was featured on Jay's sophomore album In My Lifetime, Vol. 1. Jay-Z later began dating Beyoncé in 2001, and in 2003 Diddy teamed up with her for a guest verse on her single Summertime. Jay-Z and Diddy bonded over philanthropy, and in 2005 they joined forces to make a $1 million donation to Hurricane Katrina relief efforts, with the two appearing together on television to present the donation on live television. Since then, the two rappers have been seen enjoying each other's company over the years. Their most recent public appearance together appears to have been at the 2022 BET Awards, at which Jay-Z sang Diddy's praises in a video tribute piece. 'Here's this guy from a neighborhood similar to where I grown up that made it to these unreachable heights,' he said of his old friend. 'Puff was the first one that came through and made us feel like it was us.' Beyoncé's latest Fourth of July performance comes shortly after she concluded her epic six-night concern run in London and her fabulous shows in Paris. She closed out the European leg of her Cowboy Carter tour and brought out her husband to perform their hit single Crazy In Love in Paris as the couple took the stage together for the first time in seven years. Her concert in France was a family affair as she was also joined by their daughter Blue Ivy on stage and also had her mom Tina Knowles supporting them. After performing in cities around Europe, Beyonce performed in her hometown of Houston, Texas last week and experienced a horrifying moment when she suffered a stage mishap with a mid-air prop. At one point during her show on June 29, the red convertible she rides high above the crowd during her performance of 16 Carriages tilted dangerously, threatening to throw the Cowboy Carter artist off the car and into the audience. Still, Beyoncé returned to the main stage and finished the performance like the consummate professional she is. After the show, Beyoncé's team released a statement addressing the incident. 'Tonight in Houston, at NRG Stadium, a technical mishap caused the flying car, a prop Beyonce uses to circle the stadium, and see her fans up close, to tilt. 'She was quickly lowered and no one was injured. The show continued without incident,' Parkwood Entertainment said. Despite the terrifying stakes, Beyonce appeared calm while in the car. It's unclear what exactly occurred but according to various social media accounts, her car began to tilt in the air. According to the Houston Chronicle, her car had stopped moving midair. has contacted representatives for Beyonce for comment but did not immediately hear back. According to Hot New Hip Hop, Beyonce left the stage floor briefly after her car was properly lowered to the ground before coming back to wrap up the performance. The songstress, now safely on stage, then resumed performing her song and thanked her fans with a heartfelt message. The Cowboy Carter Tour, officially titled Cowboy Carter and the Rodeo Chitlin' Circuit Tour, is Beyonce's ongoing concert tour in support of her album Cowboy Carter. It's an all-stadium tour, featuring 32 stadium shows in the U.S. and Europe. The tour began on April 28, 2025, in Inglewood, California, and is scheduled to conclude on July 26, 2025, in Paradise, Nevada.

The Sean Combs verdict is all about timing

H as anyone watched Get Him to the Greek recently? Yeah, didn't think so. A late-stage evolution of the bromance film genre, it came out all of 15 years ago, which might as well be 150 years ago now, and it was pretty popular back then. But few people talk about GHTTG any more, maybe because it wasn't actually that funny. Or maybe because it features Sean Combs as — in a way that seemed delightfully meta at the time, as he riffed on his off-screen persona — an oversexed man with anger issues. Oh, how we laughed. Last week Combs's trial came to an end when the jury acquitted him of racketeering and sex trafficking. Instead, he was found guilty only of the lesser crime of transporting prostitutes over state lines to partake in his sexual orgies, which he called 'freak offs'.

Diddy spiked my drink – it felt like I had 50 valium… he wanted me to leave with him but I feared I'd be raped

A FORMER gogo dancer in Ibiza clubland believes she had a narrow escape from the clutches of Sean 'Diddy' Combs – claiming he spiked her drink and made sexual advances. Belen Ronda Campesino, 45, says she felt so out of it after encountering the now disgraced hip-hip mogul at the club she worked at, that it felt like she had taken '50 Valium tablets'. 8 8 8 The beautician claims Combs, 55, then tried to drag her to a house party where she fears she might have been raped. Her story comes after Grammy-winning US rapper Combs was convicted on Wednesday of prostitution charges in his sex-crimes trial in New York. He was found not guilty of the more serious crimes of racketeering and sex-trafficking but could still face 20 years in prison. Belen says details from the star's trial — including claims he made two ex-girlfriends have sex with male escorts at drug-fuelled parties referred to as 'freak-offs' — had turned her stomach, made her heart race and given her 'severe anxiety'. She adds: 'It makes me furious to hear during his trial what he has done to women. 'I don't really follow the news but when I saw some pictures of this guy because of his trial I got really nervous. 'I had a similar experience with him to everything that has been coming out now.' Belen says she encountered Combs in 2006 around the DJ booth at the DC-10 club where she worked. She recalls: 'It looked like he had taken a lot of drugs, his jaw was totally out of joint. 'He was with four very large bodyguards. Diddy's 'phantom fixer' breaks her cover after rapper cleared of racketeering 'He made sexual advances on me, telling me that he liked me a lot.' Belen, who lives in Spain, says things had begun to go south, when Combs bought her a drink. She adds: 'I saw that when he went to put the wad of cash away he took out a bag with a white powder in it, which I thought was cocaine. 'But he started to do something weird in his pocket and it really bothered me. 'I turned around and was telling a friend, but then I stupidly drank the juice. 'About 10 or 15 minutes later I started feeling dizzy and sleepy and I was sweating heavily. 'I didn't understand what was going on.' She reveals that she had tried to escape to the VIP area, but he followed her there and tried to get her to a party at his house. 8 8 She says: 'I told him I didn't want to go, that I was not feeling well and needed to go home. 'He squeezed my arm and was pulling on my hand. 'That's when I felt sure they had put something in my drink. 'My friend really wanted to go to the party but I told her we might be raped if we went.' 'Dizzy and sleepy' She says Combs tried to stop her leaving, but she ran to the bathroom and left the club. She reveals: 'The next day I slept the whole day. 'People were calling me and ringing my bell at home but I didn't hear anything. 'It was like I had taken 50 Valium tablets. 'Now I realise I had a very lucky escape.' A party fixer exclusively told The Sun on Sunday last year how Ibiza clubs such as DC-10, Space and Amnesia were Combs' stomping grounds for years. After the verdicts were read out on Wednesday at his trial, Combs dropped to his knees and made a praying gesture. 8 But he was denied bail, remains in jail and is expected to be sentenced over his prostitution conviction on October 3. But due to sentencing guidelines, he is likely to serve less than five years in prison. A lawyer representing more than 100 alleged victims in civil cases against Combs vowed they would fight on despite the sex-trafficking and racketeering not-guilty verdicts. Tony Buzbee said: 'Diddy dodged a big bullet today. 'But that doesn't end the saga.'
