Dehradun Police book five linked to Chhangur Baba gang for alleged religious conversion racket
The action, initiated at Ranipokhri police station, stems from a complaint by a local businessman whose daughter was reportedly targeted by the group, which allegedly operated a conversion racket through Instagram.
Dehradun Senior Superintendent of Police Ajay Singh confirmed the development, stating, "The Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) had contacted Doon police regarding this matter, and subsequently took Abdul Rahman and a young woman named Mariam from Doiwala into custody for questioning."
Based on the information provided by the UP ATS, Dehradun Police swiftly formed its own team and launched a thorough investigation into the alleged racket.
During the course of their probe, several suspicious Instagram IDs linked to the operation were put under close surveillance.
Police sources revealed that Abdul Rahman, a key figure, originally from Mainpuri, Uttar Pradesh, was born a Hindu but converted to Islam after coming into contact with Jalaluddin alias 'Chhangur Baba's' gang approximately 12 years ago. He had moved to the Selakui area about a decade and a half ago in search of work and currently works as a taxi driver in Shankarpur, Sahaspur.

Dhirios banned in Goa, but still held: Petitioner to HC
Panaji: Govt has assured the high court that it would look into the issue of bullfights, known as 'dhirios' in Goa. Advocate general Devidas Pangam gave this assurance after the HC was informed that dhirios were occurring rampantly in the state. Radhakrishna Salgaonkar has filed a contempt petition in the HC, alleging that despite the court's directions and a ban on bullfights in Goa, the activity has continued unabated. As proof, he presented an Instagram post promoting bullfights. He also drew the court's attention to a detailed complaint he had made to authorities, including the chief secretary, the DGP, the Animal Welfare Board, the director of animal husbandry and veterinary services, and the cybercrime police station. He alleged that none of the authorities took any cognisance of his complaint. The HC told the advocate general to obtain instructions regarding Salgaonkar's contention that some social media profiles were now deleted, but information about bullfights, and the sale of bulls for these fights, remained on social media. The division bench of the HC said that before issuing a notice to govt under the Contempt of Courts Act, the advocate general has assured the court that he would look into the matter. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Many Are Watching Tariffs - Few Are Watching What Nvidia Just Launched Seeking Alpha Read More Undo The court asked Salgaonkar to provide any information on dhirios to the advocate general and directed that the petition be listed on Aug 18. In 2023, the HC directed the DGP to prepare an action plan to prevent bullfights in Goa. The court directed the DGP to identify the organisers and suggest mechanisms with which police officers would be granted authority to prevent bullfights. People for Animals filed a contempt petition attaching several news reports, including six by TOI between Jan and Aug 2021, on bullfights taking place in Goa and bulls dying as a result. TOI reported at the time that bullfights were occurring almost every day between 3pm and 4pm, when there was less movement on roads, in the jurisdiction of the Colva police station. Statistics at the time indicated that South Goa accounted for double the illegal bullfight cases compared to North Goa, with the HC informed that most of these took place in the jurisdiction of the Colva police station. In Jan this year, TOI reported that one of the attendees of a bullfight near Benaulim beach was gored to death. Last month, the South Goa collector held a high-level law and order coordination meeting to prevent such events. The collector issued directions to police to maintain round-the-clock surveillance and take immediate action to prevent dhirios. She directed the deployment of various intelligence-gathering methods to identify locations where the illegal activities were being planned and to ensure swift intervention.

Fraudsters pose as J&K ATS, dupe retd bank official of Rs 28L
Lucknow: In a new variation of 'digital arrest' scam, cyber fraudsters posing as officers of the Jammu & Kashmir Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) duped a 63-year-old retired bank cashier in Lucknow of over Rs 28 lakh after confining him to psychological captivity through threats of espionage and sedition charges. The victim, Narendra Kumar Mishra, a resident of Vikas Nagar and a retired employee of Indian Overseas Bank, filed a complaint at the Cyber Crime Police Station in Gomtinagar, alleging that he was virtually placed under house arrest for over a week. The FIR was registered late Friday. According to Mishra, he received a phone call on June 28 from a man who introduced himself as an officer from the Jammu and Kashmir ATS. The caller accused Mishra of sending classified Indian Army documents to Pakistan and claimed that a case of terrorism was registered against him. Mishra was warned not to inform the police or anyone else, as he was "under surveillance." The pressure escalated when Mishra received a WhatsApp video call from a man dressed in a police uniform, who claimed to be UP ATS chief. The impersonator told him he could be arrested under the National Security Act and Unlawful Activities Prevention Act unless he "cooperated" discreetly. In a state of panic, Mishra began following their instructions. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Do you have a mouse? Then, on July 4, he was made to transfer Rs 17.45 lakh to another account in Mumbai under the name Ramesh Chandra. Throughout this period, the fraudsters maintained constant control over him through WhatsApp calls and messages. "They monitored my every move. They told me not to step out, not to speak to bank officials or my family. I was mentally locked up in my own house," Mishra told police. The money was part of his post-retirement corpus. It was only after the pressure began to lift and he spoke to a relative that Mishra realised he had been conned. Cybercrime cell in-charge, SHO Brijesh Yadav said: "We are tracing the flow of money and identifying the mule accounts. The scam has characteristics similar to other 'digital arrest' frauds, but the impersonation of J&K ATS is a new twist," he said. Police believe this may be part of a wider network of cyber criminals who are shifting tactics by invoking high-stakes national security fears to exploit individuals. Officials are also examining whether deepfake videos or pre-recorded uniformed visuals were used to impersonate ATS officers.
