Man sucked into MRI machine by his own metal necklace critically injured

Police said the machine's magnetic field immediately attracted "a large metallic chain," the man wore, and pulled him into the machine.
Homicide detectives are investigating after a man was violently sucked into an MRI machine by a metal chain around his neck, police in New York said.
The horrific incident took place at a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) medical facility on Long Island, Kenneth Palmieri, a spokesperson with the Nassau County Police Department, confirmed to USA TODAY.
The facility is in the village of Westbury, a town of North Hempstead on the North Shore of Long Island.
According to a press release from police obtained by USA TODAY, just after 4:30 p.m. local time on July 15, officers responded to a medical emergency call at the Nassau Open MRI in the 1500 block of Old Country Road.
At the scene, witnesses told officers a 61-year-old man "entered an unauthorized M.R.I. room while the scan was in progress," police said in the release.
Officials have not released the man's name because, as of Friday, police told USA TODAY they had not learned if he had died. It was not immediately known whether the man was a visitor to the facility, a patient or if he worked there.

Machine immediately attracted 'a large metallic chain around his neck'
According to police, the machine's magnetic field immediately attracted "a large metallic chain" the victim wore, which quickly pulled him into the machine and "resulted in a medical episode."
Police did not elaborate about the extent of the man's injuries.
At the scene, officers reported they assisted the man who was transported to a local hospital in critical condition.
As of Friday, July 18, Palmieri said, the man's condition was not immediately known.
According to police Commissioner Patrick J. Ryder, the case remained under investigation.
USA TODAY contacted Nassau Open MRI on July 18 but has not received a response.

MRI risks: 'Injuries from projectiles'
Used for disease detection, diagnosis, and treatment monitoring, MRI is a "non-invasive imaging technology" that creates three-dimensional, detailed anatomical images, according to the National Institute of Biomedical Imaging and Bioengineering.
Adverse events from MRI scans "are rare," according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), which regulates MRI equipment.
Millions of MRI scans are performed across the nation every year, the FDA wrote on its website. The agency said it receives around 300 incident reports annually involving MRI scanners and coils from manufacturers, distributors, user facilities and patients.
Most of the reports, according to the FDA, include burns, as well as injuries from "projectile events" (objects being drawn toward the MRI scanner). High-powered magnets in the machine quickly draw items, especially metal, into the machine's chamber.
"The strong magnetic field can attract metallic objects, potentially causing them to become projectiles and injure patients," the FDA's website reads.
The magnetic force "is strong enough to fling a wheelchair across a room," according to NIBIB. "Patients should notify their physicians of any form of medical or implant prior to an MR scan."

Paul Gallagher, brother of Oasis' Liam and Noel Gallagher, charged with rape: Reports

Paul Gallagher, the older brother of Oasis musicians Liam and Noel Gallagher, has been charged with rape and multiple instances of physical abuse following a police investigation, according to multiple reports. Gallagher was charged with rape and three counts of sexual assault, London's Metropolitan Police said in a statement, according to The New York Times and BBC. The man also faces three counts of intentional strangulation, two counts of making a threat to kill, assault causing actual bodily harm, and coercive and controlling behavior. Authorities said the charges stem from a 2024 investigation into alleged offenses the occurred between 2022 and 2024, according to the Times and BBC's reporting. An unnamed woman, who is reportedly involved in the case, is receiving support from specially trained officers. USA TODAY has reached out to the Metropolitan Police for comment. Gallagher is expected to make an appearance at Westminster Magistrates' Court on Aug. 27, per the outlets. He denies all accusations against him, Gallagher's law firm Carson Kaye Solicitors said in a July 28 statement. "Paul Gallagher has been charged with a number of offences all relating to a single complainant," the statement read. "Mr. Gallagher has consistently engaged with the police throughout their investigation and always strongly denied the allegations made against him. He looks forward to clearing his name, but as there are now ongoing legal proceedings, our client is unable to comment further." Gallagher's legal troubles come as his famous brothers have been back on the road for Oasis' long-awaited reunion tour, which kicked off July 4 at Cardiff Principality Stadium in Wales. The superstars are scheduled to bring the tour to North American fans on Aug. 24 with a show in Toronto, followed by performances in Chicago; East Rutherford, New Jersey and Pasadena, California. USA TODAY has reached out to representatives for Liam and Noel Gallagher for comment. While Gallagher has kept a lower profile compared to his rock 'n' roll siblings, he has made several TV and film appearances in support of his brothers' musical careers, including the 2016 documentary "Oasis: Supersonic" and the 2019 film "Liam Gallagher: As It Was." Gallagher also coauthored a 1998 biography, "Brothers: From Childhood to Oasis: The Real Story," which discussed Liam and Noel's early life and rise to fame. FBI reviewing death of guest aboard Carnival Dream cruise ship

The FBI is investigating the death of a guest aboard the Carnival Dream cruise ship. The bureau's Houston field office is 'aware of an incident' that took place around July 23 aboard the vessel, according to spokesperson Connor Hagan. 'An FBI Maritime Liaison Agent, based out of the Texas City Resident Agency, is coordinating with the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG), Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and the cruise line regarding this incident,' Hagan told USA TODAY in an email. Hagan could not share additional details, citing the ongoing investigation. Carnival Dream is currently sailing Bahamas and Western Caribbean cruises round-trip from Galveston, Texas, according to CruiseMapper. Carnival Cruise Line spokesperson Matt Lupoli said FBI reviews of deaths onboard cruise ships are 'standard practice.' 'This routine protocol ensures transparency,' he said in an emailed statement. 'It does not automatically imply suspicious circumstances, and the facts of this matter do not suggest any such activity. We extend our heartfelt sympathy to our guest's family and loved ones in this difficult time.' CBP did not have any information to share, and the Port of Galveston referred USA TODAY's request for comment to the FBI and Carnival. The Coast Guard did not immediately respond to a separate request for comment.

New docuseries explores Ruby Franke's 'twisted dynamic' with Jodi Hildebrandt: See trailer

Viewers will learn more about the "twisted dynamic" between infamous mommy vlogger Ruby Franke and business partner Jodi Hildebrandt in a new docuseries from Investigation Discovery. "Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence," set to premiere in early September, combines exclusive interviews, commentary, as well as extensive archival and police footage to offer "unprecedented insight" into Hildebrandt's rise to power within the Mormon community through her life improvement program ConneXions and how it led her to Franke. The show, specifically, will chronicle the women's "doomed partnership" and the "dangerous, disturbing results of unchecked influence to reveal the physical and psychological impact of their abusive actions." Franke, who ran a popular YouTube channel called "8 Passengers" with her family, and Hildebrandt, Franke's counselor-turned-business partner, were arrested and convicted of child abuse after two of Franke's six children were found abused and malnourished. "The docuseries charts the magnetic connection between the two and how the melding of Franke's strict family values with Hildebrandt's controversial beliefs created a microcosm of control, manipulation, and brutality that led to the devastating emotional and physical abuse of the Franke children," Investigation Discovery said in a news release. Here's what we know about "Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence," including how to watch it. Who is Ruby Franke? And what did she do? Ruby Franke, 43, is a former mommy vlogger who lived in Springville, Utah, with her husband Kevin and their six children. The couple ran a popular and now-defunct YouTube channel called "8 Passengers," which showed snippets of the family's daily life online to an audience of millions beginning in early 2015. Franke later became the subject of widespread criticism online for her parenting choices, particularly her discipline methods that some considered borderline abusive. The pushback intensified when Franke co-founded ConneXions with Hildebrandt, a family counselor turned business partner. Many found that the "parenting style" the pair promoted was extreme and harsh. The frequent inclusion of what has been called homophobic, racist and transphobic comments did not help their popularity. In one often-referenced example, Franke told viewers that children do not deserve, and should not receive, unconditional love. Both women were arrested and initially charged with six counts of second-degree aggravated child abuse in September 2023 after two of Franke's six children were found abused and malnourished, the office of Eric Clarke, the Washington County Attorney in St. Georiga, Utah, announced at the time. They both pleaded guilty in December 2023 to four of the six counts as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors, USA TODAY previously reported. Franke and Hildebrandt were sentenced to prison time ranging from four to 60 years in February 2024 and are currently serving their respective sentences. What will be in 'Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence'? The four-part docuseries "underscores Hildebrandt's manipulative and dangerous tendencies and how when combined with Franke's strict family values, they created an environment rife with manipulation, control, and abuse," according to Investigation Discovery. "Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence" does feature "extensive interviews with former clients." Jessi Hildebrandt, Hildebrandt's niece, and others, including local journalists as well as current and former members of the Mormon faith, will also offer "additional and exclusive insight" throughout the docuseries, the TV network said. Jason Sarlanis, president of Investigation Discovery, said in a statement, "The disturbing alliance between Ruby Franke and Jodi Hildebrandt has captivated and horrified the public, and this docuseries peels back the layers of that relationship through exclusive interviews with family members, former clients, and experts to explore the broader implications of family vlogging and the devastating impact of family abuse." Watch 'Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence' trailer How to watch 'Ruby & Jodi: A Cult of Sin and Influence' The four-part Investigation Discovery docuseries will premiere over two nights, Sept. 1 and Sept. 2, at 9 p.m. ET/midnight PT. Episodes will be available to stream on HBO Max.
