'This £15 viral hair oil is actually worth the hype - my hair looks fuller in just a month'

Daily Mirror05-05-2025

After going viral on TikTok, Mirror's shopping writer Grace put Hair Syrup's affordable pre-wash oil to the test to see if it lived up to its hype
If you've been scrolling on your Instagram or TikTok feed in the past few months, it's likely you've come across the brand Hair Syrup before. Hair Syrup was created by Lucie McLeod, back when she was a 21-year-old university student in 2019.
After playing around with DIY hair oils to restore her brittle hair, Lucy eventually developed the perfect formula, which she later used to create syrups for different hair concerns. During the height of lockdown, a hair syrup video went viral, and the brand has been rapidly growing ever since.
As with many things that gain internet virality, I was sceptical to see if these hair syrups would actually live up to the hype, but after trying one of the brand's most popular ones, Rapunzel, I was pretty shocked with the results.
Priced at £14.95, this is one of the more affordable hair oils on the market. So what exactly is it? Rapunzel is a pre-wash oil formulated with pink grapefruit, flaxseed, castor seed, and pomegranate, which help nourish and revitalise the scalp. What's left is fuller, softer and healthier-looking locks.
Rapunzel Pre-Wash Hair Syrup review
I've been suffering from brittle and thinning hair over the two past years, and I'm pretty sure it's down to London's hard water (plus a combination of bleach damage from my balayage last summer). So I was looking for an oil, treatment or mask I could use to revive it. I'm very low maintenance, I can't commit to having to apply something every single day, as I know I just won't do it, so when I found Hair Syrup, I knew it would suit me, as you only need to use it once or twice a week.
The first time I used the oil I think I used a bit too much and was left with some pretty greasy hair, even after double shampooing. But once I gave it another go with a lighter hand, I couldn't believe that it had immediate results. My hair felt shinier and softer after the first use.
However, my goal really was thickening, so I knew I had to stick with it a bit longer, and I can say after a month of consistent use (and by consistent, I mean around twice a week), I can see some noticeable difference. My hair definitely looks fuller around the hairline, which was one of my main concerns, and it looks far less dull than it had been.
I don't really have any cons with this product. As mentioned, if you use too much, your hair will be left feeling a little sticky. However, that's a user error issue rather than anything to do with the formula.
If you're looking for some alternative pre-shampoo treatments, I've heard great things about Amika's The Kure Multi-Task Repair Treatment, £29, and Aveda's Botanical Repair Pre-Shampoo Treatment, £39.

We Tried The Lululemon Maxi Dress Everyone's Obsessed With – And Yes, It's Worth the Hype

What's the most fashion forward dress you can wear this summer? That viral Nobody's Child polka dot dress? A celeb-approved Dôen dress? Neither, actually, if the internet is to be believed. No, it would seem that the dress of the season is a maxi from Lululemon. You might be more familiar with Lululemon as the go-to spot for buttery soft Align leggings and athleisure sets that take you from Pilates to brunch with ease, but the activewear brand evidently has a few more tricks up its sleeve. The most recent addition that's calling our attention is the brand's 2-in-1 maxi dress. Unlike most dresses we wax lyrical about, the Lululemon 2-in-1 maxi is simple and largely devoid of intricate details and trendy patterns. Yet, it more than manages to justify its £128 price tag thanks to its genius versatile design. As the name suggests, the dress can be worn two ways: as a strapless drop-waist maxi, and as a long skirt with the bodice folded over. As well as offering an easy blank canvas that can be dressed up or down with ease, the maxi dress also benefits from the brand's activewear know-how and is crafted from its signature four-way stretch, sweat-wicking and naturally breathable fabric that feels luxe while keeping you comfortable and looks good on an array of body types. ©Instagram/@christinalasekstyling 2-in-1 Maxi Dress in Green I could go on and on about how effortlessly elegant and wearable the Lululemon maxi dress is, but that's no use to you without some styling guidance, and the multi-wear dress presents an array of styling options. On our Instagram feeds, influencers are sporting the strapless dress with a raffia bag and wedge heels or suede sandals for a relaxed sunny day. Of course, you could also lean into the athleisure of it all and wear the dress with a denim jacket and chunky trainers or dress it up with kitten heels and plenty of gold jewellery. As a skirt, it'll work wonders with a baby tee and elevated flip flops on holiday, while a boho blouse and cowboy boots will put you in a festival state of mind no matter if you're heading to Glastonbury or not. The Lululemon website proclaims that the dress is 'voted most versatile', and if I'm being honest, we're inclined to agree. As with most viral hits, the 2-in-1 maxi is also selling out fast, so if you manage to find your size in stock, we suggest you skip the hesitation. Trust us, this is a dress you'll be wearing multiple ways for years to come. 2-in-1 Maxi Dress in Black 2-in-1 Maxi Dress in Brown 2-in-1 Maxi Dress in Ivory Main image credits: ©Instagram/@meg_legs @iamcarissarenee Hitanshi Kamdar is a senior commerce writer for Grazia. Wedding guest dressing has turned tacky thanks to celebs like Georgia Steel – boob-bursting dresses belong in Benidorm

There's a big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season that creates a sense of elegance - without having to have your boobs and bum out WHAT THE FROCK? Wedding guest dressing has turned tacky thanks to celebs like Georgia Steel – boob-bursting dresses belong in Benidorm WEARING white as a wedding guest used to be a cardinal sin and the ultimate insult to the bride. But nowadays there's a far worse style crime. Advertisement 8 Kim Kardashian sported a cleavage-baring gown paired with strappy heels at her former assistant's wedding Credit: Mega 8 Kendall Jenner wore a barely-there cut-out black gown to her pal's wedding Credit: laurenperez/Instagram 8 At Hailey and Justin Bieber's wedding, fans accused Kylie Jenner of trying to steal the bride's limelight by wearing a gold, floor-sweeping gown Credit: Instagram Gone are tailored trouser suits, chic two-pieces and glamorous, ankle-skimming gowns. Instead, you're more likely to spot looks you would find on the strip in Benidorm. Advertisement Think bum-skimming Lycra mini-dresses, skimpy bra tops, or dresses with sky-high thigh slits and boob-baring cut-outs. One of the things I love about a wedding — aside from dancing to Come On Eileen and drinking a headache-inducing amount of champers, — is getting dressed up. I'm talking sophisticated dresses, stylish hats and fascinators and killer heels for the girls, and sharp suits for the blokes. The novelty of getting spruced up to the nines makes the special day all that more exciting and memorable. Passing judgement on others' outfits while you wait for the bride to make her entrance (which, admit it, we all do) is a big part of it, too. Advertisement I'm out of the 'going to a wedding every other weekend' age bracket now — and what a relief, because the looks that seem to be trending wouldn't be out of place in the queue for an Oceana nightclub. Across social media, scantily-clad twenty-somethings share their wedding outfits with pride — while I gawp, with prejudice. A quick Google search for 'wedding guest outfits' produces dozens of brands' standalone pages dedicated solely to this category. Frankie Bridge is slammed by fans for 'OTT' wedding guest dress - as people warn 'don't upstage the bride' But as you scroll through the likes of Club L, Oh Polly and River Island, you'll find that the dresses and gowns — yes, Gen Z wear full-on gowns now — are better suited to the Love Island finale than a wedding in your local country house hotel. And, like most trends, we have celebrities to blame. Advertisement When Dani Dyer wed footballer Jarrod Bowen last week, guest and fellow Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing what looked like a revealing white dress to her pal's big day. After Georgia posted a snap on TikTok of the lace-trimmed Miss Circle number she wore, the trolls came out in force, bashing her for picking what was in fact a 'soft beige' dress. 'Wearing white to a wedding?' questioned one, while another waded in with: 'Way too bridal for a wedding.' And Georgia isn't alone. Two months ago, White Lotus actress Sydney Sweeney came under fire for the 'inappropriate' dress she wore to her Anyone But You co-star Glenn Powell's sister's wedding. Across social media, scantily-clad twenty-somethings share their wedding outfits with pride — while I gawp, with prejudice Clemmie She chose a cleavage-baring corset-style dress from V Chapman in a very pale blue. Advertisement Fans thought the colour was an issue. Comments included: 'That is not an appropriate shade of blue for a wedding' and 'The number one [rule] of a wedding is don't wear anything close to white.' 8 Love Islander Georgia Steel was slated for wearing this dress to Dani Dyer's big day Credit: Instagram 8 Sydney Sweeney was slammed for wearing a cleavage-baring corset-style dress to co-star Glenn Powell's sister's wedding Credit: Instagram 8 Hailey wore a backless white dress to a friend's big day in 2023 Credit: Instagram/@haileybieber Advertisement Personally, I take no issue with guests wearing white at a wedding. As long as they aren't also wearing a long veil (cropped veils on fascinators are allowed), who cares? Especially during summer, when every other dress on the high street is some shade of white. No one at the wedding is going to mistake someone else as the bride. It's the bride's name on the invite and her kissing the groom — so no need for the unnecessary uproar. However, what I would take issue with is the plunging neckline and lingerie-style basque of Sydney's outfit and, in Georgia's case, the fact her lacy dress is practically see-through. Don't get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I'd be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding. Advertisement As one person commented online: 'Kinda tacky to wear to a wedding. C'mon Syds, you can do better.' And she can. The woman is an ambassador for designer brand Miu Miu, for crying out loud. Raid something from their archives that's less underwear-like and more sophisticated. But it's not just Sydney. Kendall Jenner wore a heavily cut-out black gown to her pal's wedding, which sent the internet into meltdown due to its slashed fabric that barely covered her nipples. And her sister, Kylie, has also faced outfit-shaming from keyboard warriors. Don't get me wrong, Sydney is a knock-out, and if I looked like that, I'd be wearing sexy numbers, too — just not to a wedding Clemmie At Hailey and Justin Bieber's wedding, fans accused her of trying to steal the bride's limelight by wearing a gold, floor-sweeping gown with peek-a-boo cleavage and a hip-high slit. On X, one critic wrote: 'If someone tries to pull a Kylie Jenner move like this at my wedding . . . they will kindly be escorted out with a red wine stain down the front of their dress.' Advertisement Ouch! But then Hailey wore a backless white dress to a friend's big day in 2023, which broke all the so-called wedding rules for looking just like a bridal gown. When it comes to these codes, they're subjective and are dependent on the wedding location. If you're lucky enough to be a guest at a ceremony abroad in a hot country, sitting in a long-sleeve, high-neck, polyester dress at noon is going to give you heatstroke. And wearing a tailored pencil midi dress to sit on a bale of hay in a field will make you stick out like a sore thumb. I get it. I've been there myself and it's a minefield. But if in doubt, aim for a more demure style. Advertisement Don't copy the under-boob and pelvis-flashing looks of young celebs — think more of the women who have nailed the guest brief. Keep it classy Cast your mind back to happier times when Meghan Markle and Prince Harry got married. Amal Clooney, in a yellow, capped-sleeve midi-dress by Stella McCartney, was crowned best-dressed guest in attendance. Bold, but without being in danger of over-shadowing the bride, it was perfect. 8 Demi Moore was a flawless royal wedding guest in a burgundy dress and matching veiled hat by Stella McCartney Credit: Getty 8 Amal Clooney, in a yellow, capped-sleeve midi-dress by Stella McCartney, was crowned best-dressed guest in attendance at Meghan and Harry's wedding Credit: Getty Advertisement Another flawless guest at a royal wedding was Demi Moore. She battled gale-force winds in a burgundy dress and matching veiled hat — again, by Stella McCartney — when Princess Eugenie married Jack Brooksbank in 2018. And she looked incredible. Cindy Crawford's daughter, actress Kaia Gerber, also got it right when she wore a classy, long-sleeved dress from Reformation to a friend's 2018 wedding in Miami, Florida. At the time, the navy, slit-leg frock retailed for £180, proving that even supermodels with designer brands at their fingertips can look amazing in high street buys. A big emerging trend on the high street this wedding season seems to be minimal frocks with slinky scarves, which are intended to be worn draped down your back, not wrapped around you like a winter woollen. Advertisement They create a sense of elegance without having to have your boobs and bum out. So if you are heading to someone's nuptials this summer, keep it classy, girls. Underwear as outerwear and flesh-flashing cut-outs are for the weekend, not for a wedding.

The £30 Ozempic swimsuit that takes 10lbs off your tummy – here one woman tries it

Can one swimsuit really help you drop a dress size? TikTok users think they've found one which does just that... SWIM WIN The £30 Ozempic swimsuit that takes 10lbs off your tummy – here one woman tries it Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) IF the thought of wriggling back into your swimsuit fills you with dread, you're far from alone. According to new research from lingerie and swimwear brand Pour Moi, only seven per cent of women feel fully fabulous stepping out in their cossies. Just seven. 5 I recruited size 14, mum-of-one Michelle Court to test out this miracle swimsuit (pictured in her normal swimsuit) Credit: David Cummings 5 Available for £27.99 on Amazon in six different colours, the cossie completely showcased Michelle's figure Credit: David Cummings The rest of us? We're artfully draped in sarongs, in tent shaped cover-ups or doing that frantic towel dance by the pool in a bid to stay incognito. Because let's be honest, hauling last summer's swimwear from the bottom drawer rarely feels good. That magical tummy control? Stretched beyond salvation. The 'statement colour'? More like a fading memory, now tinged with SPF smears and fake tan mishaps. Then comes the dreaded try-on. You catch a glimpse in the mirror and bam - any flicker of body confidence evaporates faster than your iced rosé in a midday heatwave. But here's the thing, it's not just you. We've all had the mirror moment. We've all sworn under our breath in badly lit changing rooms. And we've all wished, more than once, that swimwear came with built-in courage. But those dreams could become a reality. Whilst on the search for swimwear this year, I turned my attention to TikTok which, like it or not, is a good barometer for consumer style reviews. The first one I stumbled-scrolled upon was a brand called Cupshe. A top selling American swimwear brand that does ship to the UK and is available on Amazon. So far, so good. Primark drops brand new collection of bikinis in gingham, floral and colour block designs - and they'll set you back just £2.50 per piece Cupshe is a brand that on the surface sounds like every other swimwear brand with words like 'empower', 'inspire' and 'support'. But the brand's Slim & Sculpt swimsuit caught my eye. A viral clip racking up millions of views featuring three women, all different in shapes and sizes, slip into the same figure-loving cossie. The secret? A corset-style lace-up back that cinches in all the right places, giving each of them an envy-inducing hourglass shape. In the comments section one fan of the swimwear gushed: 'These make you feel SO confident – and that speaks volumes!' Another said: 'Just got mine and I can't believe how good it looks.' I'm immediately sold - but I need to see it in the flesh. Available for £27.99 on Amazon in six different colours, I recruited size 14, make-up artist and mum-of-one Michelle Court, 41, from Rochford, Essex, to test out this miracle swimsuit. 'Every time it comes to going on holiday I get a new cossie,' says Michelle. 'I used to be a bikini Queen and never think of pulling on a one-piece, but after a baby my confidence to show off my body has dwindled. 'These days I love a swimsuit for holding everything in. 'When I'm looking for my new holiday swimsuit I always try to hunt for one with a really good shape that flatters my figure, doesn't dig in too much and one that keeps everything in its place.' Medium is the corresponding Cupshe size for Michelle's UK dress size but out of the packet, the cossie looks rather small. We both agree it might be a struggle to get it on. But two minutes later Michelle is out of the dressing room in the red lycra number and looks like she's ready to run in slow motion down the beach. So far, so Baywatch. 5 The secret? A corset-style lace-up back that cinches in all the right places Credit: David Cummings 5 Michelle felt like the Special K lady Credit: David Cummings 5 Cupshe is a top-selling American swimwear brand - and is popular on TikTok Credit: tiktok@ 'I look like the Special K Lady,' says Michelle. 'It's like I've been on weight loss injections!' She was right, this swimsuit completely showcased her figure - and not a fat jab in sight. I was dubious as to whether swimwear can really be that transformative but from seeing Michelle in a thousand-wash beige costume that had zero bust support or elasticity, the change was undeniable. She said: 'It really does hold you in, like, cinches in everywhere - not like that old one from the loft.' 'Its got amazing bust support, it feels like someone has just come in behind me and lifted me - and lifted everything. 'I feel way more confident than I do in my usual costumes.' Made from 92 per cent polyester and 8 per cent Spandex the swimming costume does the nipping and tucking with its fabric, but the real magic comes from the corsetry at the back. You can tie it as loosely or as tight as you like to take inches off your waist and it really, really works. And at the back the suit also gives great bum coverage, unlike many high street swimsuits that are barely bigger than a thong at the back. Michelle said: 'Honestly, I love it. It's a 10/10 swimsuit… Can I take it home?'
