Time of India14 hours ago

Bengaluru: The Centre has sanctioned Rs 193 crore under the State Capital Investments Scheme for constructing working women's hostels and water facilities supporting iPhone contract manufacturer Tata Electronics in Kolar district's Narasapura industrial area.
Tata Electronics acquired Wistron, a Taiwanese contract manufacturer, for $125 million two years ago.
T
he Karnataka govt approved the detailed project report and allocated funds for water supply infrastructure in the Narasapura industrial zone and neighbouring villages. According to sources, the accommodation facilities will house 6,000 women workers, with the project completion scheduled in 18 months.
"In Narasapura industrial area, Tata Electronics (Wistron) is setting up a large manufacturing unit, where about 18,000 women workers are expected to be employed. Therefore, to address the drinking water requirement of the women workers and surrounding villages, the proposed drinking water scheme is necessary. In the absence of such a project, there will be difficulty in operating women-centric industrial units.

The central govt has already released Rs 127 crore to Karnataka's SNA (Single Nodal Agency). Karnataka industries minister MB Patil told TOI that the initiative is aimed at encouraging greater participation of women in the workforce. As part of the state's latest industrial policy, 10-15% of industrial areas have been earmarked for developing housing facilities, with a focus on supporting women to remain in the workforce.
Recently, Patil took to social media to say Apple's contract manufacturing partner Foxconn will start production of iPhones at Devanahalli in June. Foxconn's 300-acre Devanahalli unit, within the Information Technology Investment Region (ITIR), is being established with an investment of Rs 21,911 crore. It is expected to be the largest iPhone manufacturing facility outside China.
The Economic Times reported recently that the Foxconn facility will prioritise accommodation for its female workforce, with dormitories for 30,000 employees.
Initial govt approval indicated 50,000 job opportunities.
Karnataka maintains one of India's highest female labour participation ratio with a 31.5% female work participation rate, according to the 2021-22 Periodic Labour Force Survey. The state's workforce comprises 41% in agriculture and 21.5% in industry. Rural women predominantly work in agriculture, while urban women work in manufacturing and services, as per IWWAGE's report.
Recent statistics from Sumita Dawra, labour ministry secretary, showed that the women worker population ratio increased from 22% in 2017-18 to 40.3% in 2023-24, while the female labour force participation rate rose from 23.3% to 41.7% during the same period.

State forms committee to look into demand for farm loan waiver

With local body polls set to be held within three to four months, the Maharashtra government has announced setting up of a committee to look into the demands of farm loan waiver. The move comes after former independent MLA Bachchu Kadu threatened to intensify his ongoing fast from June 16 by deciding to drop water intake. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule on Saturday wrote to Kadu informing him the same. 'A high-level committee will be set up on the issue of farm loan waiver within 15 days. A decision on the farm loan waiver will be taken based on the report. And a decision on staying the loan recovery from a defaulter and providing new loan will be taken by holding a special meeting,' said the letter, which was submitted to Kadu by Industries Minister Uday Samant. Kadu has been on fast for the past seven days in Amravati district demanding farm loan waiver, scholarship for their children, monthly honorarium of Rs 6,000 for disabled persons etc. All political parties had extended support to Kadu's agitation with NCP-SP chief Sharad Pawar calling him. A state-wide roadblock agitation was planned on June 15 as Kadu had announced to give up water from Monday. Bawankule on Friday had met Kadu and dialled CM Devendra Fadnavis from the protest site. The revenue minister had said that the decision on farm loan waiver will be taken in consultation with the cabinet. The letter mentioned that a decision on budgetary provision for honorarium for Divyang people will be taken in the upcoming monsoon session of the legislature and other demands will be addressed by holding a meeting of chief minister and ministers concerned. Earlier in the day, workers of Kadu created ruckus at the programme of Deputy CM Ajit Pawar demanding farm loan waiver. Pawar informed them that a decision has been taken to form a committee on all the demands raised by Kadu. As the protesters continued sloganeering, police used force and removed them from the auditorium. Meanwhile, opposition Congress slammed the state government over the decision to announce a committee on farm loan waiver. 'Why was no committee mentioned when Mahayuti promised farm loan waiver in its campaign during Assembly elections? The government has no intent to extend the waiver but wants to merely survive the day. The Rs 2,100 promised under Ladki Bahin scheme have not yet been given. This government is misleading people,' said state Congress chief Harshavardhan Sapkal. Senior Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat questioned the need to form a committee. 'The government has lakhs of crore to construct highways but has no money for farm loan waiver. The government in the past has used this trick of forming committee to sideline the issue,' said Thorat.

Incessant rainfall cripples Mangaluru and surrounding area, coastal Karnataka on red alert

Life in Karnataka's Mangaluru came to a grinding halt on Saturday as torrential rains lashed coastal Karnataka, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to issue a red alert for Dakshina Kannada and surrounding districts. The intense downpour, which began on Saturday afternoon, led to widespread waterlogging, severe traffic snarls, and flooding of low-lying areas. Also Read - Mangaluru survivors recount 2010 plane crash tragedy amid recent Air India mishap Several key roads in Mangaluru were submerged, including stretches beneath the busy Pumpwell flyover, where traffic was thrown out of gear. In one incident, a public transport bus stalled mid-route due to flooding. Passengers and local residents were seen wading through knee-deep water to help push the vehicle to safety. Areas such as Car Street, Lower Bendur, Padil, Kottara, and other flood-prone localities bore the brunt of the downpour. The Padil railway underpass was rendered unusable after rainwater accumulated, cutting off traffic flow. Car Street and nearby residential colonies also reported water entering homes, raising concerns about urban drainage preparedness. While IMD had been forecasting heavy rains throughout the week with limited rainfall observed until Friday, Saturday's sudden and intense spell has caught many off guard. The department has warned that the red alert will remain in place until the morning of June 16, as weather models continue to indicate the likelihood of more intense showers and thunderstorms across the coastal belt. Emergency services are on standby, and civic agencies have begun pumping out water from inundated zones. This surge in rainfall is part of a broader monsoonal pattern affecting the western coast of India, with coastal Karnataka frequently witnessing flash floods during peak monsoon activity.

FIR Against Supertech, Its Promoter For Defrauding IDBI Bank Of Rs 126.07 Crore

New Delhi: The CBI has registered an FIR against Noida-based construction firm Supertech Limited and its promoter R K Arora among others for allegedly defrauding IDBI Bank of Rs 126.07 crore, officials said Saturday. Arora has been named in the FIR alongside whole-time directors Sangita Arora, Mohit Arora, Parul Arora, Vikas Kansal, Pradeep Kumar, Anil Kumar Sharma, and Anil Kumar Jain, in addition to the Noida-based company, they said. On Saturday, the CBI conducted coordinated search operations at five locations linked to the accused," including official and residential premises in Noida and Ghaziabad," in connection with the case. During the raids, agency officials seized cash amounting to Rs 28.5 lakh, CBI's spokesperson said in a statement. The case was initiated following a complaint from IDBI Bank, which alleged that the accused had conspired to misappropriate sanctioned loan funds through fraudulent means. According to the FIR, the bank alleged that the company and its directors submitted forged documents to secure credit facilities under false pretences. The loan account was subsequently declared a wilful default and categorised as fraudulent, allegedly resulting in wrongful losses totalling Rs 126.07 crore to IDBI Bank Ltd., the CBI said.
