Malaysia, Laos to fast-track ASEAN power grid, expand port and rail connectivity
By AUFA MARDHIAH
MALAYSIA and Laos have agreed to accelerate the second phase of the ASEAN Power Grid project, while also deepening collaboration on transport infrastructure, port development, and digital economy initiatives.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said both countries were aligned on pushing forward regional energy interconnectivity, with the next phase aiming to link Laos, Cambodia and Thailand to Peninsular Malaysia and Singapore.
'I agree with Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone that we should fast-track the second phase to benefit Laos, Cambodia, and Thailand into Malaysia and Singapore,' he said during a joint press conference in Putrajaya today, in conjunction with the Lao PDR Prime Minister's official visit to Malaysia.
He added that the first phase — connecting Vietnam to northern Peninsular Malaysia — is already in progress as part of ASEAN's broader energy integration ambitions.
Malaysia and Laos also reaffirmed their commitment to enhancing trade and logistics connectivity, with updates on the inland port in Perlis that links to a tunnelling port in Laos. The project is expected to be completed within the year.
To support cargo flows between both countries, Anwar said a new agreement has been signed with Penang Port to channel goods through Perlis and onwards to Laos via the inland facility in Tanah Leng.
'This showcases a very important collaboration not just in port operations, but also in trade and investment between our two friendly countries,' he said.
Both leaders also discussed joint efforts in port training and management, with Malaysian ports — including Penang Port, Port Klang, and Port of Tanjung Pelepas (PTP) — ready to offer technical assistance and capacity-building programmes.
In addition, cooperation in labour, digital technology, artificial intelligence (AI), and semiconductors was explored, with both sides expressing interest in expanding talent development and technology sharing.
The two countries also highlighted ongoing progress under the KTMB–LNR–SE memorandum on the proposed ASEAN express train, which aims to shorten travel time between ASEAN countries and China through improved rail connectivity.
Anwar also expressed hope that consensus could be reached for Timor-Leste's full ASEAN membership by October this year, adding that the matter will be discussed further at the upcoming ASEAN leaders' retreat.
On the situation in Myanmar, he reiterated the need to uphold the Five-Point Consensus, calling for continued humanitarian aid, an immediate ceasefire, and constructive dialogue under ASEAN mechanisms.
Anwar further thanked Laos for its support throughout Malaysia's transition into the ASEAN Chairmanship this year and described the bilateral relationship as warm and cooperative.
He added that Sonexay is expected to return for a working visit in the near future to further strengthen government-to-government and private sector ties between both countries.

Anwar Receives Aidiladha Greetings From Iranian President, Reaffirms Support For Palestine
KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- In the spirit of Aidiladha, which upholds the values of sacrifice and justice, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim expressed appreciation for the steadfastness of Iranian President Dr Masoud Pezeshkian in defending the plight of the Palestinian people, particularly in Gaza. In a phone call with Masoud earlier today, Anwar said Malaysia stands firmly with Iran in strongly rejecting all forms of occupation and the ongoing expulsion of Gaza's people, who continue to be oppressed by the Zionist Israeli regime. 'I also conveyed that Malaysia's foreign policy is not dictated by external powers but is built on national interests and firm convictions. 'Malaysia condemns the hypocrisy of certain countries that claim to uphold human rights yet silently allow mass killings without any dignified action. Silence in the face of oppression is a betrayal of universal human values,' he said in a statement on Facebook. Anwar said Masoud also extended Aidiladha greetings for the celebration on Saturday. Anwar prayed that hajj pilgrims from both nations currently in the holy city of Makkah would be granted a blessed hajj and contribute to the development of the 'Ummah' upon returning to their respective countries. The prime minister also expressed gratitude to Masoud for his noble efforts in facilitating the repatriation of two Malaysian citizens previously detained in Iran.

SCEKL 2025 To Spotlight AI-driven Smart Cities
BUSINESS By Naveen Prabu & Nur Atiq Maisarah Suhaimi KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The upcoming Smart City Expo Kuala Lumpur 2025 (SCEKL 2025) will place a strong emphasis on artificial intelligence (AI)-based urban solutions, to promote practical smart city adoption among Malaysian municipalities and the wider ASEAN region. Digital Nasional Bhd (DNB) chief corporate officer Datuk Ahmad Zaki Zahid said the expo, hosted by the Digital Ministry and co-organised by DNB and the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC), is expected to attract 10,000 visitors and 2,000 delegates. 'The goal is to raise awareness of the next phase of smart city development, especially with AI. We want to ensure there is greater adoption of technology,' he told Bernama in an exclusive interview. Ahmad Zaki said smart cities today are no longer limited to infrastructure upgrades, but increasingly depend on AI, digital twins, and high-speed connectivity to enable predictive planning, real-time services and automated operations. 'Smart cities have over 80 indicators. What's new now is how AI improves service delivery — like knowing exactly when a bus will arrive or using high-definition surveillance to improve safety,' he said. Ahmad Zaki highlighted that Malaysia's major cities, such as Kuala Lumpur and George Town, already have advanced command centres, while smaller cities can benefit from affordable solutions being showcased at the expo. Meanwhile, he said 'digital twin' technology, real-time monitoring systems, the role of 5G infrastructure, and real-time responsiveness are crucial to the improvement of Malaysian cities. Ahmad Zaki explained that real-time responsiveness is key for urban services like traffic management and port automation.

Rubber Market Ends Lower
Rubber Market Ends Lower By Durratul Ain Ahmad Fuad KUALA LUMPUR, June 5 (Bernama) -- The Malaysian rubber market closed lower today amid mixed regional rubber futures market performance, as the ringgit strengthened slightly against the US dollar, a dealer said. She said market sentiment was dented by uncertainties in relation to the United States (US) tariffs and trade policy amid weaker US economic data. 'Nevertheless, further losses were capped by gains in crude oil prices and growing hopes that China will introduce more stimulus measures to lift its economy,' she told Bernama. According to the dealer, the US dollar slid in the previous session (morning) after weak US jobs and services data, with more weighty employment data due on Friday. 'Damage to the US economy is becoming more apparent from US President Donald Trump's erratic tariff action, while bilateral deals remain unrealised,' she added. At 3 pm, the Malaysian Rubber Board reported that the price of Standard Malaysian Rubber 20 (SMR 20) fell by 8.5 sen to 690.5 sen per kilogramme (kg) while latex in bulk decreased by 4.5 sen to 605 sen per kg. -- BERNAMA
