Manipur observes Patriots' Day honouring heroes of 1891 war
2
Imphal: People of Manipur observed Patriots' Day on Wednesday, remembering the valour and sacrifice of their forefathers who fought against British colonial rule during the Anglo-Manipur War of 1891.
Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla led the state in paying tributes to the fallen heroes, including Yuvraj Bir Tikendrajit and Thangal General, who were hanged by the British on Aug 13 in 1891.
Speaking on the occasion held at Bir Tikendrajit Park in Imphal, Bhalla said the state has faced its share of troubles in recent times but the courage and resilience of the people continue to inspire hope, peace, and stability. Manipur today stands at a crossroads but it must be reminded that the lessons of the past must shape the future, he said.
"In 1891, young men and women stood shoulder to shoulder with their elders, ready to defend their land.
The same spirit that resisted colonial domination is propelling Manipur to lead in sports, arts, technology and sustainable development. Our state has already shown the nation how young Manipuris excel from the sporting arenas to cultural stages. Let's now show the world how we can unite for peace, progress, and prosperity," he told drawing the attention of the youths.
He further said the govt is committed to restoring peace and advancing developments and working in close cooperation with the Centre and local communities.

Will reconsider holding PU polls if blockade continues, says DSW
1 2 Chandigarh: A deadlock over police presence inside Panjab University is still on, with no breakthrough in sight. A day after Wednesday's confrontation over police checkpoints, the blockade has not only persisted, but has now extended. On Thursday night, the blockade was extended to just before the T-point from Gate No 2, forcing anyone entering through that gate to turn left into the residential area to reach the inner campus. The earlier point, closer to the Administrative Block, were also blocked by protesters, effectively restricting movement in the sector of campus that houses several academic departments. Despite rain throughout the day, students turned up, some carrying tricolour in hand as the eve of Independence Day added symbolic colour to the sit-in. Many stayed through passing showers, holding ground at the barricades. Independence Day celebrations are scheduled for Friday morning at the Parade Ground, located barely a few minutes' walk from the main protest site. Protesters themselves held a meeting Thursday evening to decide their course of action for the event. As the Parade Ground is readied for flag-hoisting and cultural programmes, the approach roads remain occupied by placards and slogans. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Use an AI Writing Tool That Actually Understands Your Voice Grammarly Install Now Undo If the deadlock holds, Panjab University's 78th Independence Day will open to two contrasting scenes — a formal ceremony honouring the nation's freedom and a swelling student blockade a few hundred metres away. Meanwhile, in a significant development, the Dean of Student Welfare said the ongoing blockade could force the university to speak to Chandigarh Police and reconsider holding student elections, as polls cannot be conducted without police deployment this time. An 11.30 am meeting he called to resolve the standoff was boycotted by all student parties. He said the police presence was meant solely for students' security, but protesters were creating indiscipline. "If we keep security, they complain; and if something unfortunate happens, we will be blamed," he remarked. Stay updated with the latest local news from your city on Times of India (TOI). PCMC recovers 167cr property tax in amnesty period
Navi Mumbai: Panvel City Municipal Corporation recovered Rs 167 crore property tax paid by 60,082 property holders. Since the launch of the amnesty scheme, 37,519 property owners have taken 90% fine exemption with a day left (Aug 15) and collectively availed Rs 64.8 crore. A protest was held on Wednesday on the property tax. The scheme was effective from July 18 to Sept 20 but split into four tiers. Those clearing their outstanding property tax between Aug 16 and Aug 31 would get 75% rebate, between Sept 1 and Sept 10 would get 50% discount and from Sept 11 to Sept 20, a 25% waiver of the fine amount. Thousands hit the streets in Panvel to take part in a protest rally covering about 1 km between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Chowk and PCMC head office. Seven major political parties besides various social and other forums joined the protest terming the property tax levied as unlawful, impractical and intended to divert public attention. Kharghar Colony Forum president, Leena Garad, had appealed to the residents not to pay the property taxes even under the amnesty scheme. Later, leaders jointly handed over a memorandum to the PCMC chief, Mangesh Chitale. Talking to the media, Patil alleged that the ruling party had promised to not hike any tax for five years but started collecting the property tax with fine/interest. There is no rebate offered on the basic property tax but the amnesty scheme launched is only to provide relief on the fines/interest amounts. The parties have alleged that despite PCMC being a 'D' class municipal corporation, the property tax levied is equivalent to that of 'A' class civic body like Mumbai.
