ENG vs IND 4th Test: Will wicketkeeper Dhruv Jurel get lucky at Old Trafford?
The son of an army man, he focuses on 'process' and 'discipline'. Those two words, he believes, have helped him grow as a cricketer. In a competitive environment, where opportunity doesn't come easy, long waits may often make or break careers, and for Jurel, it has been a long eight-month wait since his last Test outing, in Perth in November last year. But the 24-year-old has taken it in his stride.
Ever since landing in England a couple of months ago, Jurel has featured in just two games for India A, where he scored 227 runs in four innings and claimed seven catches. But in the senior team, Jurel has been under the shadow of Rishabh Pant, the team's vice-captain and the first-choice wicketkeeper-batter.
While Pant featured in all the three Tests in the series so far, Jurel worked closely with fielding coach T. Dilip and batting coach Sitanshu Kotak over the last several weeks to make sure he remains fit and in the groove.
When India had a long session at Beckenham earlier this week, Jurel was among the first few batters to have a long session in the nets. As bowling coach Morne Morkel took his run-up and aimed at Jurel's stumps to test his outside edge, the youngster remained unperturbed and relied on his natural strokeplay. The session continued for nearly 30-odd minutes as he looked confident and ready.
And as India gears up for the must-win fourth Test at Old Trafford, beginning on Wednesday, India's assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate indicated that if Pant, who hurt his left index finger during the Lord's Test, isn't ready to keep the wickets, India could look at Jurel. In that case, Pant could be used as a specialist batter. Jurel, being a steady middle-order batter, could also add depth to the batting department.
If both Jurel and Pant end up playing together, it would be a selection headache for the team management, with Nitish Kumar Reddy possibly missing out.
But the team sources indicated that Pant will be monitored over the next couple of days before taking a call on whether to play him as keeper-batter or unburden him by bringing Jurel in as a specialist keeper.
'We don't want to go through that again where we have to replace the keeper halfway through in the innings. We are just trying to give (Pant's finger) as long as possible (to heal), and hopefully he's good to go in Manchester in the first training session,' Doeschate said, adding: 'Jurel is in the equation…'
In the previous Test, Jurel came in as Pant's substitute after the latter hurt his finger, and ended up conceding 25 byes in the second innings, as India went down by 22 runs to concede a 1-2 lead in the five-match series. But it's not just Jurel—several wicket-keepers have struggled in England, where the ball wobbles a lot once it goes past the batter.
Over the last few years, the young wicketkeeper-batter has earned praise from the cricketing fraternity and during the Lord's Test, former India international Dinesh Karthik, while commentating for Sky Cricket, lauded Jurel's keeping skills and observed that he had 'strong basics' that allowed him to catch Ollie Pope off Ravindra Jadeja.
Despite having the skills and proving his mettle, it has been a long wait for Jurel. Now, with the series on the line and the team management not willing to risk Pant, wicketkeeper Jurel could just get lucky at the iconic Old Trafford.

IND vs ENG 4th Test: Versatile Washington Sundar shows he's the perfect fit
Washington Sundar celebrates his century during day five of the 4th Test vs England at Old Trafford (Photo by) Manchester: Three days before he was unexpectedly picked for India's home Test series against New Zealand last Oct, Washington Sundar scored a 152 for Tamil Nadu against Delhi in a Ranji Trophy match while batting at No. 3. 'I consider myself to be a top-order batter,' Washington had asserted at the end of the day's play. 'I'm happy with the kind of opportunity I got batting at No. 3. I'll be batting regularly up the order in future. Hopefully, I can deliver such knocks consistently in future.' In the middle of a disastrous Test series against New Zealand on raging turners, a shaken team management and selection committee had picked Washington for his off-spinners. Soon, he was the lead spinner ahead of R. Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja when India took the field in Perth a month later. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! In England, he was drafted into the playing XI in the second Test purely on the basis of his ability to add batting strength to the lineup down the order. Calls for including a specialist spinner in Kuldeep grew louder, but the team management kept backing Washington to be the second spinner. On Sunday, he answered the call with the bat at No. 5 and saw to it that India came out of the fourth Test without losing the series. Washington is now the second Indian to score his maiden Test century in Manchester, the first being Sachin Tendulkar in 1990. India stay alive, England frustrated after draw; handshake drama at Old Trafford and more Washington's composure at the crease, against a red-hot English attack on a pitch with disconcerting variable bounce, needs to be measured beyond the number of overs he has batted. It's not that he hasn't batted well for India before. He scored a half-century on debut at the Gabba in 2021 and also has an unbeaten 96 against England to his name. He averages in the upper 30s in Tests. But Sunday was a different kind of challenge. He was asked to bat at a position which is manned by Rishabh Pant, whose fractured foot left a gaping hole in the middle order. Washington had to prove he was a good enough batter to fill in for Pant, after having proved he is skillful enough with the ball to keep Kuldeep on the bench. 'Washington was in really good form. It's just that sometimes, when you're playing seven or eight batters, sometimes it's difficult to accommodate someone. With Rishabh not being there, it was our opportunity to put Washy at five,' Gambhir said on Sunday. 'We always knew what kind of form he was in, after the way he was batting in the nets and even in the last couple of Tests,' Gambhir added. Poll Should Washington Sundar be considered a regular top-order batter for India? Yes, absolutely No, he should focus on bowling Maybe, depending on form When he opened up the game by claiming four wickets in the second innings of the Lord's Test, Washington was asked if he was comfortable with the team management describing him as someone who can fill in as a second spinner and add a few important runs at No. 8. 'This is a team sport. I want to contribute to the team differently in different passages of a match. I've been given different roles. That's what makes Test cricket exciting,' he had said. Washington is the quiet achiever of Indian cricket. He has already been a key part of some memorable Tests since his debut. He has just made it very difficult for India to leave him out of the XI. Why Has Rishabh Pant's Instagram Post About Toe Fracture Invited Trolls?
'Is he a soldier?' Rishabh Pant's Instagram post about his broken foot ended up on the wrong side of the Internet who mocked him for exaggerating his role for the country. Rishabh Pant, India's wicketkeeper-batter, showed incredible grit and courage when he walked out to bat in the fourth Test despite being in tremendous pain after a freak incident that resulted in a toe fracture. After India secured a heroic draw at Old Trafford in Manchester, thanks to tons slammed by the southpaws Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, Pant took to Instagram to share the aftermath of the injury that left him in a fracture cast. While the vice-captain of India has received immense support from the cricket fraternity for his unmatched display on the cricket field, his Instagram post ended up inviting trolls. But why? Rishabh Pant's Viral Instagram Post The 27-year-old cricketer took to Instagram on Monday and acknowledged the love and support he has gotten from his fans after an on-field injury took him away from the action. 'Appreciate all the love and good wishes coming my way. It's been a real source of strength," Pant wrote in a heartfelt note. 'I will begin rehab once my fracture heals and I am slowly settling into the process. Staying patient, following the routines and giving it my 100%. Playing for the country has always been the proudest moment of my life. Can't wait to be back doing what I love." Trolls Emerge What was meant to be a harmless update to inform the worried fans about his leg situation soon became a target for countless Internet trolls. Is he a soldier? The trolls reasoned that it was a profession for which he was paid handsomely, and he was being 'too dramatic" and could 'tone down" a bit, as he was playing a sport and not putting his life on the line. 'I don't know why these Cricketers think they are doing some national duty by playing cricket. Bro you are just playing for BCCI to get money and fame that's it. Stop this nonsense for milking sympathy every other day, (sic)" wrote one user on X. 'Never understood this overhyped 'playing for the country" narrative in cricket. It's a damn profession, not some sacred national service. You chose it, maybe out of passion, just like millions of others choose their careers. No teacher, or engineer throws up patriotism after work (sic)." 'Chill brodie you got injured playing a sport not while defending your country to type all that (sic)." Despite the trolling, fans and well-wishers flooded Rishabh Pant with positive comments, praising his high spirits even though an injury forced him to miss the final Test between India and England at The Oval on Thursday, July 31. Freak Injury Batting on 37, Pant tried to reverse sweep a delivery bowled by Chris Woakes. His bat ended up under edging the ball that crashed onto his toe. The batter seemed in an awful amount of pain almost instantly, and when his shoe was taken off, the bruising and swelling showed the extent of the damage done. Such was the pain that Pant had to be carted off in a golf buggy. Rishabh Pant's foot is bleeding and a lot of swelling as well. An ASTOUNDING innings from a hobbling Rishabh Pant comes to an end… 🎙️👏 — Sky Sports Cricket (@SkyCricket) July 24, 2025 India's Head Coach Gautam Gambhir praised Pant and asserted that the generations will speak of the cricketer who played with a broken foot. top videos View all 'The character and foundation of this team will be built on something what Rishabh did for the team and for the country as well. Any amount of praise is not enough for him, especially batting with a broken foot," Gambhir told reporters on Sunday. 'Not many people have done that in the past. And he (Pant) put his hands up. And that is that is why I say that any amount of praise…I can sit here and talk about this for hours and hours. I think the generations will talk about this and generations ahead should talk about it that there is someone who batted with a broken foot," he added. Rahul, India's watchful protector at the top
More than the runs he has scored so far - 511 including two hundreds and as many fifties - the way he has batted deserves more attention. Among all India batters, he looked most comfortable in English conditions. As should be the way, he is playing late, keeping the bat close to the body, meeting the ball under the eye and not rushing into the stroke. More importantly, he is almost leaving everything outside the line while covering his off stump. These are the secrets for success in England and Rahul seems to have mugged them up thoroughly. Except those two runs he scored in the first innings of the second Test at Edgbaston, Rahul has crossed double-figures mark in each of the remaining seven innings. Besides, he stitched together crucial partnerships with other batters at various points of time to keep India in the hunt during the series. Be it his 195-run partnership with Pant for the fourth wicket in the second innings of the first match or the 141 runs he added with the same batter in the first essay of the Lord's Test. The latest was the rescue act he and Gill carried out when India were two down without even opening their account in the second innings in Manchester. The duo added 188 runs for the third wicket to give India hope of putting up a fight in challenging conditions. There are also a couple of knocks where he couldn't convert the starts but in those innings as well he built partnerships with fellow batters to set the platform for upcoming batters. One such innings came in Birmingham where he added 55 runs with Yashasvi Jaiswal. The other came in the recently-concluded match where he and Jaiswal once again scored 94 runs together to give India a solid start in the first innings. In most of these innings, the Karnataka batter has held one end and played patiently blunting England's pace attack. With the Dukes balls understandably getting soft after the first 30-35 overs in the hot and humid weather, his patient innings have only helped India's cause. The 33-year-old right-hand batter has faced 998 balls so far with only his captain Gill ahead of him playing 1106 balls. Interestingly, he is only the batter among the top five run scorers not to have hit a six. But he has smashed 67 fours, again only behind Gill, who has scored 79. His affinity with fours highlights his style of play, which looks more inclined towards playing grounded shots rather than going for expansive drives.
