Capitec, FNB to deliver smart IDs, passports in hundreds of its branches
In fulfilment of the target set by cabinet, which tasks the department with expanding its services to 1,000 bank branches by 2029, the department's director-general Tommy Makhode wrote to CEOs of Absa, African Bank, TymeBank, Capitec Bank, Discovery Bank, First National Bank, Investec Bank, Nedbank and Standard Bank on April 30 inviting them to join the digital-first new phase of the department's existing collaboration with the banking sector.
'This collaboration dates back more than a decade and has, until now, seen the successful delivery of smart ID and passport services at only 30 branches across five different banks,' the department said in a statement.
However, that original model relied on the costly duplication of home affairs staff and hardware inside bank branches and failed to take advantage of technology to expand services to all rural and urban areas where bank branches exist.
Home affairs minister Leon Schreiber will visit Capitec and FNB this week to provide further information on how this reform will benefit South Africans.
'It marks the beginning of the end for long travelling distances to reach home affairs services, for long queues, as well as for the green ID book with its unacceptable vulnerability to fraud and identity theft,' the department said.

More banks join Home Affairs' digital drive for IDs and passports

IOL previously reported that Home Affairs had teamed up with Capitec and FNB to offer these services at hundreds of bank branches across the country. Schreiber revealed that he had also extended an invitation to the CEOs of other major banks, including ABSA, Discovery Bank, Standard Bank, and others, to join the initiative and help broaden access even further. According to the department, more banks have now joined the partnership, including ABSA, Discovery Bank, and Standard Bank, bringing the total number of participating banks to five. "Capitec, First National Bank, Standard Bank, ABSA Bank, Discovery Bank. We anticipate that over 840 bank branches will provide Smart ID and Passport services nationwide within 12 months." Ministerial spokesperson Duwayne Esau said. However, while the move has been welcomed by many, some critics have raised concerns about the cost and efficiency of the expanded service delivery model. The Department of Home Affairs has moved to allay these fears, with Esau saying that the rollout will not cost taxpayers extra and is fully funded by fees paid by participating banks. "Zero. Esau also noted that the previous model offered limited access in rural and underserved areas, with only 218 Home Affairs offices and 30 bank branches, mostly in urban centres. After 120 years, Murray & Roberts heads towards liquidation
Murray & Roberts, the multinational engineering and construction group, will not oppose liquidation proceedings initiated by a creditor, seeking final winding up of the business. Image: Supplied After 120 years, Murray & Roberts Limited (MRL), a South African engineering and construction stalwart founded in 1902, faces liquidation. The company, which listed on the JSE in 1951 and merged with Roberts Construction in 1967, did not oppose creditor-initiated proceedings in the Gauteng High Court. This decision follows a prolonged period of financial distress that rendered the holding company insolvent after the sale of its core assets. On August 15, the group informed shareholders that a creditor had initiated liquidation proceedings in the Gauteng Division of the High Court of South Africa, seeking a final or provisional winding up order. According to reports Murray & Roberts stated, "Given the company's financial position, Murray & Roberts does not intend to oppose the liquidation application." The company plans to continue engaging with its legal advisors and will update shareholders on further material developments. On November 22, 2024, the company was subsequently placed on business rescue following significant liquidity constraints by the South African-based international engineering and construction group over a prolonged period. The business rescue practitioners said that creditors had approved MRL's business rescue plan on April 8, and in terms of this plan, MRL's main assets, its mining businesses, would be sold to a consortium of investors led by South Africa-based asset management firm Differential Capital. Sassa flags 'unlawful' grant deductions by insurance companies
The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has raised concern about the surge in 'unlawful' deductions by financial services providers, such as insurance companies and funeral schemes, targeting grant beneficiaries. The agency said it has been receiving complaints from beneficiaries who have had money deducted using Sassa's name without permission. Sassa CEO Themba Matlou said the agency does not work with financial service providers and has no authority to make deductions without the consent of the beneficiaries. 'We have respect for our beneficiaries and the act governing social assistance and we will never do anything to short change our clients,' he said. 'Your money is your money, If you qualify for a grant the money belongs to you and as Sassa we have no right, nor authority, to dictate how you use it.' He urged beneficiaries who have fallen victim to visit the Sassa local office to report the matter for investigation. 'Alternatively, clients who dispute signing a funeral policy with the financial services provider are advised to dispute the deduction by sending an SMS to 34548 with their identity number and the financial services provider's name. They should also visit the insurer or the services provider to cancel the policy.' According to the Social Assistance Act, the agency only allows one deduction per month of no more than 10% of the grant for a funeral policy issued by an insurer registered under the Long-term Insurance Act to be made directly from a social grant. Funeral deductions are not permitted from child-related grants such as the child support grant, care dependency grant or foster child grant. Temporary grants are also excluded, the agency said. 'The regulation says the beneficiary of the social grant must consent to such deduction by electronic communication or any other means of communication and has submitted such consent by electronic communication or any other means of communication to the agency.'
