Delhi Police detain 36 illegal Bangladeshi migrants; banned IMO app, Bangladesh IDs recovered during raid
New Delhi [India], June 16 (ANI): The Foreigners Cell of the North-West District Police apprehended 36 Bangladeshi nationals, including 17 minors, during a targeted raid in the Wazirpur JJ Colony area of Delhi on June 13, said an official.
The operation was based on specific intelligence regarding the presence of illegal immigrants in the locality.
According to the police, the crackdown was part of a broader initiative to identify and take legal action against unauthorised foreign nationals residing in the national capital. Acting on credible information, the Foreigners Cell conducted sustained surveillance, culminating in a comprehensive verification drive across 25 footpaths and 32 lanes within the jurisdiction of Bharat Nagar Police Station.
During the operation, a suspicious individual was apprehended and interrogated. Though he initially misled the officials, he later confessed to being a Bangladeshi national without valid documentation. Based on his revelations, police identified and detained 35 more individuals from the area.
The group, comprising 19 adults and 17 children, was all found to be living without valid travel documents, visas, or permits, in violation of the Foreigners Act, 1946, and other relevant immigration laws. Police said all individuals were taken into custody and transported to the Foreigners Cell for interrogation and formal documentation.
During the questioning, the detainees disclosed that they had previously worked in a brick kiln in Mewat, Haryana, but fled the area fearing arrest by local authorities. Since then, they had been moving frequently between footpaths and were attempting to find rented housing to integrate into the local population.
Authorities recovered seven smartphones equipped with the banned IMO application, often used for international communication, along with 13 Bangladeshi national identity cards. The seized material has been sent for forensic analysis, and further investigation is underway.
Police sources said efforts are ongoing to trace the network facilitating illegal immigration and sheltering of foreign nationals. Legal proceedings for deportation and additional action under relevant immigration and cybersecurity laws are being initiated. (ANI)

SC allows Lalit Modi to seek civil remedy in plea against Rs 10 crores fine imposed by ED
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): The Supreme Court on Monday has granted liberty to Lalit Modi to move to a civil court to seek remedy against a Rs 10.65 crore fine imposed on him by the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) in a Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) case in connection with the 2009 season of the Indian Premier League. Modi had sought directions for the recovery of the fine amount from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), instead of him. A bench of Justices PS Narasimha and R Mahadevan disposed of Modi's plea, allowing him to seek civil remedy, after the counsel appearing for Modi sought to withdraw the same. Modi had moved the top court against the decision of the Bombay High Court in dismissing his plea, with a Rs 1 lakh cost. During the hearing, Modi's counsel argued that as per various earlier judicial decisions, the case is well within the Writ jurisdiction provided under Article 226 of the Constitution of India. However, the bench was of the view that the BCCI has been held as 'not a State' for recovery of the said fine imposed by the ED. 'BCCI is to be held to be 'not a state.' Recovery can't be equivalent to State', the bench stated. Modi's counsel then sought liberty to seek civil remedy by moving to a civil court in the matter. The Court agreed and disposed of the plea after noting that the same is not maintainable under Article 226 of the Constitution. In May 2018, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had levied penalties on the Board for Control of Cricket in India (BCCI) and its former chief N. Srinivasan, among others, over alleged violations in the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA) regulations in the 2009 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL). Apart from an 82.66 Cr fine on the BCCI, and an 11.53 Cr fine on Srinivasan, penalties have also been imposed upon the former chairman of the IPL, Lalit Modi (10.65 Cr), former BCCI treasurer MP Pandove (9.72 Cr) and the State Bank of Travancore (7 Cr). The penalties amount to a total of 121.66 Cr. On July 20, 2011, the ED had issued show cause notices to Modi and the BCCI under provisions of FEMA regarding the alleged transfer of a sum of Rs 243.45 crores to Cricket South Africa without prior permission of the RBI, ahead of an IPL tournament in 2009. The ED was subsequently allowed by the Bombay High Court to summon several former BCCI officials, including Manohar and then secretary N Srinivasan, as witnesses in the matter. (ANI)

Plea in Supreme Court seeks judicial intervention into Kolkata rape case
New Delhi [India], June 30 (ANI): A plea (letter petition) has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking urgent judicial intervention in the recent alleged gang-rape of a 24-year-old law student in South Calcutta Law College in Kolkata. The petitioner, Advocate Satyam Singh Rajput, has sought a court-monitored CBI investigation of the incident to ensure an impartial and time-bound probe, free from political influence. Furthermore, the plea seeks immediate protection for the victim, her family members, witnesses, and her legal representatives. The plea has also sought directions from the top court to implement comprehensive safety measures in educational institutions, including mandatory CCTV surveillance, women's safety cells, and regular security audits. Additionally, the plea also seeks an interim compensation of Rs 50 lakhs for the victim's medical treatment, rehabilitation and legal expenses. Moreover, the plea urges the Court to take action against public representatives engaging in victim-shaming. On the evening of June 25, a female student was allegedly gang-raped inside a law college in Kolkata's Kasba. The police have arrested all three accused within 24 hours. The three accused, named as Monojit Mishra (31), Zaib Ahmed (19) and Pramit Mukhopadhyay (20) were former students or staff members of the same law college. According to the police, the accused named in the FIR will be produced before the A.C.J.M. of Alipore, South 24 Parganas, with a prayer to remand them to Police Custody for a proper investigation into the case. The alleged sexual assault took place between 7:30 pm and 10 pm on Wednesday (June 25) within the law college premises. According to the official, one of the accused allegedly committed sexual assault, while the others were involved in the crime. The victim's family filed a police complaint against the accused and the police have taken swift action in the matter. Two of the accused, Monojit Mishra and Zaib Ahmed, were arrested the next day (June 26), near Siddhartha Shankar Roy Sishu Udyan, close to Talbagan Crossing in Kolkata. Pramit Mukhopadhyay was arrested later the same night at his residence. The police have seized the mobile phones of all three accused. The official had visited the site and kept it under protection till they had done a forensic examination. They requested custody remand for further investigation. (ANI)

Odisha: Devotees throng Puri on fourth day of annual Rath Yatra
Puri (Odisha) [India], June 30 (ANI): On the fourth day of Rath Yatra, devotees gathered in large numbers to witness and be part of the grand event. The Rath Yatra began on June 27 from Jagannath Temple here. July 5 will mark the conclusion of the event, known as 'Bahuda Yatra'. A devotee named Anita, who got the opportunity to pull the chariot, shared her excitement and said, 'We have been feeling lucky for the last two days because when we first came here, the Lord gave us darshan on the chariot. There was a huge crowd, but even amidst that, it seemed like he was protecting us.' 'After the stampede yesterday morning, our family members were worried. However, we don't feel any chaos here. Everything is good here and everyone is kind. We are very blessed to see such beautiful scenes,' she further added. Another devotee, Deepak Rawat, who was attending the Rath Yatra for the first time, said, 'I have come here for the first time and Lord Jagannath has given me a wonderful opportunity to pull the chariot. I want to thank Lord Jagannath so that he can provide such opportunities to everyone and fulfil everyone's wishes.' Three devotees lost their lives and several others were injured in Sunday's stampede at the world-famous Rath Yatra of Lord Jagannath in Puri. Odisha Law Minister Prithiviraj Harichandan called the stampede 'very unfortunate' and said that appropriate action will be taken after the completion of investigation. 'The incident is very unfortunate. The state government has taken strict action and a senior officer will investigate the incident. We will take action once we get the report of the investigation,' Harichandan told reporters. He added, 'Mahaprabhu, with his wish, he gives darshan to his devotees. Tomorrow, the devotees will have the opportunity to offer prayers. I prayed to Mahaprabhu for the well-being of everyone.' Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi expressed deep sorrow over the incident and announced a financial assistance of 25 lakh to the families of each deceased devotee. He also assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible and pledged to prevent such tragedies in the future. Following the incident, the state government has ordered a high-level administrative inquiry to be supervised by the Development Commissioner. Puri Superintendent of Police Pinak Mishra has been appointed in place of the previous SP, and Puri Collector Siddharth Shankar Swain has been replaced by Chanchal Rana. Odisha DCP Vishnu Pati and Commandant Ajay Padhi were also suspended for negligence of duty. (ANI)
