Serious ‘Spiral Of Doom' Strategy Warning Fuels Sudden Bitcoin Price Crash Fears

Bitcoin has plummeted since hitting an all-time high of $124,000 per bitcoin earlier this month, dropping around 10% as a controversial new memecoin hits the market. Sign up now for CryptoCodex—A free newsletter for the crypto-curious The bitcoin price surged though the first half of 2025, doubling in price as U.S. president Donald Trump's crypto support and Wall Street's long-awaited adoption provide twin tail winds (while Elon Musk has quietly breaking his crypto silence). Now, as Kanye West finally drops a long-awaited crypto bombshell, serious warnings over bitcoin treasury pioneer Strategy's new fundraising rules have added to a 25% stock sell off that some fear could cause a "spiral of doom' for the company and the bitcoin price. Sign up now for the free CryptoCodex—A daily five-minute newsletter for traders, investors and the crypto-curious that will get you up to date and keep you ahead of the bitcoin and crypto market bull run This week, Strategy, led by founder Michael Saylor, loosened its long-held rules on when it will dilute shareholders to buy even more bitcoin, with the company already holding almost 630,000 bitcoin worth $70 billion. The announcement has been criticized by some analysts, who at worst fear it could trigger a "doom loop" for the company. "Potential spiral of doom looming for Strategy," EasyA cofounder and former Goldman Sachs analyst Dom Kwok posted to X, warning it could lead to Strategy being forced to sell its bitcoin to pay interest as its shares slowly decline in value. Strategy's share price, which has outpaced bitcoin over the last year as a dividend-paying alternative to holding bitcoin directly, has dropped 25% since hitting an all-time high in mid-July, falling alongside bitcoin but pushed lower due to the flood of rival, copycat bitcoin-buying companies that have sprung up in its wake. Since beginning to buy bitcoin in 2020, Saylor has transformed Strategy into a bitcoin corporate giant, holding 3% of all the 21 million bitcoin that will ever exist, while its closest rival holds just $4 billion of bitcoin. Strategy issued new 'equity guidance' this week that said the company will issue stock at a lower bitcoin market-to-net asset value multiples (mNav) than was promised as recently as July. Strategy had previously said it would not issue shares under 2.5x mNav, which calculates its market capitalisation to the value of its bitcoin holdings. If its mNav is above 1, it means Strategy stock buyers are paying a premium for bitcoin exposure, while if it's below 1 means the stock is worth less than the bitcoin the company owns. Strategy's mNav is currently 1.3, according to with some of the new bitcoin treasury companies such as Twenty One Capital and Nakamoto trading at under an mNav of 1. Sign up now for CryptoCodex—A free newsletter for the crypto-curious "Strategy today announced an update to its MSTR Equity ATM Guidance to provide greater flexibility in executing our capital markets strategy," Saylor posted to X. Under the new rules, Strategy can tap equity markets at thinner premiums, giving it a broader range of options and even allowing it to issue credit to repurchase shares if its stock falls under an mNav of 1. However, not everyone is bearish on Strategy. Earlier this month, analysts with Strive, an asset manager cofounded by U.S. politician Vivek Ramaswamy, predicted Strategy could be included in the S&P 500 as soon as September. If Strategy is included in the index, it would "instantly give tens of millions of Americans bitcoin exposure through their pension funds, 401(k)s and brokerage accounts," Strive analysts wrote, adding it would unleash 'the 'Uberization' of bitcoin—integrating digital assets so deeply into American economic life that attempting to ban them becomes nearly impossible.'

Harvard Owns IBIT. Is That Smart for Clients?

Should financial advisors and their clients follow the 'smart money?' Recently, Ivy League schools including Harvard University and Brown University have disclosed that they are among the numerous institutional investors with allocations to bitcoin ETFs. That trend is further legitimizing crypto as an asset class and may have some individual investors wondering if they, too, should bank on bitcoin. Financial advisors have different stances on whether (and how much) clients should allocate to the highly volatile category, but they agree that it should be approached with caution. For example, most of AE Advisors' clients have 5% to 10% allocated to Bitcoin via spot-price ETFs or digital custodians, president Mike Casey said. Invest in Gold Priority Gold: Up to $15k in Free Silver + Zero Account Fees on Qualifying Purchase Thor Metals Group: Best Overall Gold IRA American Hartford Gold: #1 Precious Metals Dealer in the Nation But Casey, who said he was among the first CFPs to recommend bitcoin allocations as far back as 2019, added, 'please keep in mind that bitcoin has substantially more market cap and mainstream adoption than the other crypto tokens, which are still generally speculative in nature.' READ ALSO: Why ETF Investors Persistently Miss 1%-2% of Potential Returns and Vanguard Bets ETF Buyers Willing to Pay Extra for Active Tokens of Advice Retail demand is obviously there for spot crypto products like BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust ETFs (IBIT), which is approaching $90 billion in assets. But the extent to which advisors use certain products is influenced in part by their inclusion in model portfolios — and spot crypto ETFs are almost nonexistent there. 'BlackRock is really the only one we've seen going forward with adding it into its model portfolios,' said Cindy Zarker, relationship manager at Fuse Research Network. 'All of this is changing. You have a lot of firms that have various digital-asset offerings, and they're promoting those offerings and how they can benefit a portfolio.' There are signs that digital assets are maturing, said Clark Randall, director of financial planning at Creekmur Wealth Advisors. Those include BlackRock's launch of IBIT and Congressional passage last month of the Genius Act, he said. 'In addition, research has shown that including an allocation of up to 7% in Bitcoin can improve the risk-adjusted return of a diversified investment portfolio.' Still, if more advisors are bullish on Bitcoin, it's a new phenomenon. Data from a survey last year published by Fuse show: Fewer than 20% of advisors said they would allocate a small portion of client assets to crypto. Fewer than 5% would include a crypto ETF allocation for clients. Time for Class: 'Institutional interest from endowments and other large investors lends credibility to the ETF structure because it is regulated, custodied and easy to report for taxes,' said Jared Gagne, private wealth manager at Claro Advisors. 'It does not make crypto less volatile. In wealth management, that distinction matters.' Institutions have more time to weather that volatility than individuals, and allocations for clients should be satellite holdings at most, said Patrick Huey, owner of Victory Independent Planning. 'The average individual investor can't invest with a truly infinite time horizon and is more exposed to urgent liquidity needs, emotional stress and the risk that riding out a 70% crypto correction isn't just uncomfortable, but catastrophic to their plans.' Did I just father a meme coin? Well, accidentally…

Did I just father a meme coin? Well, accidentally… originally appeared on TheStreet. Okay, I'll tell you what happened. Last month, I was writing an article about Pudgy Penguins — the NFT collection turned Walmart toy success story, known across crypto circles. It was a pretty normal day. The piece was supposed to highlight how Pudgy Penguins, against all logic, had outperformed Bitcoin that week in sheer price action. But instead of calling it "Pudgy Penguins" throughout, I used the phrase 'Walmart toy coin.' Why? Because you can literally walk into Walmart, buy a Pudgy Penguin toy, scan a QR code, and unlock an NFT. It felt accurate. It felt fun. It was just one line. That was it — the line that started it all. Apparently, calling something a Walmart toy coin is meme gold. Within hours, an X (formerly Twitter) community popped up. Someone forked a coin. They actually called it 'Walmart Toy Coin.' And no — this isn't a shill. This is just a first-hand account of what happens when the crypto trenches take a throwaway joke and run with it. To be clear: I didn't launch it. I didn't fund it. I didn't promote it. In fact, we never editorialized that phrase in follow-ups because we knew how wild things can get. But still, it happened. On that day, the newly minted "Walmart Toy Coin" was up 50%, data from DEXScreener showed. Market cap hit half a million dollars at its peak. As of writing this, it's back down to $38,000, as most meme coins go. But the community? Still hanging on. Memes are still flying. So... did I just father a meme coin? This is the kind of weird stuff only crypto can make happen. The speed, the spontaneity, the utter chaos of it all. It's funny, but also kind of telling. Anything—anything—can become a coin. A passing phrase. A tweet. A typo. If enough people think it's funny, or relatable, or ironic, they'll ape in. The coin isn't the product. The vibe is the product. We're in an age where making a coin is easier than ever. With platforms like you can launch a Solana-based token in a few clicks. No code needed. According to CoinGecko, of the nearly 7 million cryptocurrencies listed since 2021, 3.7 million have since stopped trading and are considered failed. It means over 50% of all cryptocurrencies have failed. But a handful spark. And when they do, they take on a life of their own. Communities form. Telegrams explode. Memes multiply. And suddenly you're staring at a microculture that didn't exist a day ago. And while Ethereum meme coins have been on a tear lately, it's worth noting that the success rate is still vanishingly low. For every $PEPE or $DOGE, there are 10,000 coins that never even see a chart. What makes one catch on? No one really knows. A good name helps. A good joke helps more. But timing, virality, and tribal momentum? That's the secret sauce. Walmart Toy Coin is a perfect example. It was never meant to exist. It was a throwaway line in a fun market recap. But that's the crypto internet for you — everything's remixable. Your analysis might be someone else's next Ponzi. Your joke might be someone else's LP. It's chaotic, it's dumb, and it's also a case study in how memes move markets. Honestly, the entire experience gave me a bit of insight into how meme culture works in the trenches. It's not about fundamentals. It's about being first, being funny, and being fast. Communities don't wait for permission. If they like the vibe, they'll mint the coin. And if it pumps, even for a day, that's enough. So yeah. I might have accidentally fathered a meme coin. No roadmap. No team. No utility. Just a phrase, a story, and a whole lot of copy-paste culture. The coin's probably headed to zero. But the memes? They'll live forever. That's just crypto.
