Stop the hornbill hype, focus on progress, SUPP Youth Chief tells opposition

SIBU (May 18): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Central Youth chief Councillor Kevin Lau has taken opposition politicians to task for politicising the hornbill design on Affin Bank's new credit and debit cards, urging them to focus instead of the broader vision for Sarawak's development.
In a statement yesterday, he stressed that real leaders with substance should look beyond trivial matters and work towards realising projects that bring tangible benefits to the people.
'One cannot help but wonder about the preoccupation of some opposition figures who are incessantly politicising the hornbills on Affin Bank's debit cards.
'Perhaps playing to the gallery is all some politicians have, while those with genuine commitment are working hard to drive development,' he said.
Lau described Affin Bank's presence in Sarawak as a symbol of the state's rapid growth, driven by innovation and a push to break traditional barriers.
'The relocation of Affin Bank's regional office to Sarawak marks another step in empowering local businesses, especially our SMEs (small medium enterprises). This move reflects the state government's commitment to financial autonomy and economic progress,' he added.
He urged all Sarawakians, regardless of political affiliation, to be proud of such milestones rather than ridiculing them.
'Such achievements should foster goodwill, not mockery. Sarawak's politicians on both sides should be able to see more than just birds unless, of course, they are so bankrupt of ideas that they can see nothing else.'
Lau further called for maturity and unity, encouraging all parties to support Sarawak's journey towards greater financial autonomy and economic resilience.

KTC buys RM40mil plot in Sabah industrial hub
KOTA KINABALU: Kim Teck Cheong Consolidated Bhd (KTC) has made heads turn with the acquisition of land worth RM40 million here. The six-hectare plot at the Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) will be for the development of KTC Industrial Park, the group's integrated hub for operations, logistics, and manufacturing. KTC executive director Datuk Dexter Lau said move is expected to elevate the company's annual revenue of RM1.5 billion to RM1.6 billion, strengthening it's position a leading fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) distributor in East Malaysia. "This strategic investment also marks a major milestone in the group's long-term growth strategy and is expected to support its expansion plans for the next five years," Lau said of the land in the heart of the industrial zone. The development is expected to improve operational efficiency, streamline supply chain capabilities, and further strengthen KTC's presence in both existing and new markets across Malaysia, he added. "The KTC Industrial Park is also set to become one of the largest FMCG distribution centers in the region, designed to efficiently serve markets in Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei, and Indonesia. "This investment is a strategic move that puts us on the path of sustainable growth and provides the space and infrastructure needed to meet growing demand while serving our business partners more effectively," he said, when announcing the acquisition here. Lau also said that KTC had surpassed RM1 billion in revenue as of June this year and continues to be on a strong growth trajectory. He added that KTC's total operational footprint currently covers 500,000 square feet. "We will commence construction of the KTC Industrial Park in KKIP as soon as possible, with a total investment of RM100 million. "The industrial park is expected to generate 500 new jobs, and we will prioritise hiring locals from underprivileged backgrounds to support the government's efforts in eradicating poverty," he said.

‘Cakap tak serupa bikin': SUPP Stakan chief says DAP's 30 pct Petronas stake proposal is political hypocrisy

KUCHING (June 11): Sarawak United People's Party (SUPP) Stakan branch chairman, Dato Sim Kiang Chiok, has dismissed Sarawak Democratic Action Party's (DAP) recent proposal for Sarawak to acquire 30 per cent equity in Petronas as a political gimmick aimed at shoring up its support base in the state. In a statement today, he described the proposal as a 'recycled promise in new packaging', branding it a political manoeuvre disguised as a policy proposal. 'DAP's proposal for 30 per cent Petronas equity is just a new version of the same old tactic. In their first term in federal power, they promised 20 per cent oil royalty, 50 per cent tax return to Sarawak, and UEC (Unified Examination Certificate) recognition. 'None of it happened. Even now, in their second term in government, there's no progress,' he said. Sim urged Sarawakians to see through what he called 'empty promises and false premises' meant to sustain DAP's political relevance, rather than bring real change. He also criticised Sarawak DAP's elected representatives, accusing them of underperforming while drawing salaries from both Parliament and the State Legislative Assembly (DUN). 'The people of Sarawak have been misled before. This 30 per cent equity narrative is no different. It is simply a ploy to protect DAP's vote bank, not a genuine commitment to Sarawak's rights. 'We cannot afford to keep DAP politicians who don't deliver. Their excuse of acting as check and balance is weak because they're more concerned about ATM card designs than real issues that affect Sarawakians,' said Sim. Sim also highlighted what he sees as contradictions in DAP's stance on political appointments. While the party claims its members should not hold state agency positions, it currently chairs federal bodies such as the Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board (CVLB) and the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh). 'DAP leaders say one thing and do another. It's the classic 'cakap tak serupa bikin' (talk does not match action),' he said. Sim pointed to a recent policy in Penang where the DAP-led state government came under fire after introducing a five per cent homeownership discount for Indian Muslims under the Madani Home Ownership Campaign. 'DAP has always sold itself as a party of meritocracy and equality, but this shows otherwise. They'll say anything to gain power, then do the opposite to hold on to it,' he said. In recent reports, Penang's Housing and Environment Committee chairman, S. Sundarajoo, defended the move, saying it was meant to increase homeownership among communities with low participation in the open market and does not infringe on the rights of others. 'This discount is offered by developers as a form of social responsibility and does not involve any financial support or subsidy from the state government,' said Sundarajoo.
