Hot spell to persist in Malaysia until end of July

KUALA LUMPUR: The current hot spell affecting parts of the country is expected to persist until the end of this month, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department (METMalaysia).
Its director-general, Dr Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, said the heat remains within normal levels and does not meet the criteria for an extreme heatwave, although temperatures in some areas may reach up to 36°C.
"Most areas in the country are forecast to receive minimal rainfall over the next week due to the formation of a tropical storm in the western Pacific Ocean near the Philippines.
"With the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) index predicted to remain at neutral levels through the end of the year, extreme heat is not expected to strike the country during this Southwest Monsoon season," he said.
He added that the latest weather forecast model analysis shows that active tropical cyclones in the western Pacific Ocean and South China Sea are disrupting the country's rainfall patterns.
As a result, he said, cloud seeding operations in the northern regions of the Peninsular, especially in Kerian, Perak, are currently not suitable, despite the dry and low-rainfall conditions.
"The influence of active tropical cyclones makes it unsuitable to carry out cloud seeding at this time.
"However, should there be significant weather changes based on updated forecast models, we will inform the relevant authorities," he added.
Previously, Agriculture and Food Security Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu said cloud seeding would be carried out to address the issue of dry rice fields due to declining water levels at Bukit Merah Lake caused by the heat.
Hisham explained that METMalaysia acts solely as a technical advisor and agency upon receiving an official request from any party wishing to conduct cloud seeding, particularly in water shortage crises such as the one in Kerian.
"METMalaysia will conduct weather forecast analysis using the latest models, taking into account factors such as high humidity levels, the presence of towering cumulus clouds in the targeted areas, and atmospheric stability.
"All these factors will help promote cloud formation and development suitable for generating rain during cloud seeding operations," he said.

Sarawak may experience haze in coming days, warns NREB

A hazy Kuching skyline is observed from Bukit Siol in Petra Jaya in 2023. – Photo by Chimon Upon KUCHING (July 21): Sarawak may experience haze in the coming days or weeks due to several contributing factors, said the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) Sarawak in a media statement today. As of 8am, air quality readings across the state have shown an upward trend in the Air Pollutant Index (API) since July 19. While three areas still recorded 'Good' air quality, fifteen were categorised as 'Moderate', and no area has recorded unhealthy levels so far. According to NREB, regional developments could influence local air conditions. Data from the ASEAN Specialised Meteorological Centre (ASMC) showed that only four hotspots were detected in Sarawak between July 14 and 20. 'In contrast, Kalimantan, Indonesia, recorded 114 hotspots during the same period, with 93 of them detected in just the last two days. 'With the ongoing Southwest Monsoon, which began on May 10 and is expected to last until September, prevailing winds from the southwest may carry smoke haze from outside the state. 'Sarawak is therefore at risk of experiencing transboundary haze, particularly if biomass burning activities increase across the border,' added the NREB statement. In response, the NREB has activated its haze operations room, suspended the issuance of open burning permits, and intensified field patrols and awareness campaigns on the prohibition of open burning. The agency has urged developers and the general public to refrain from such practices, especially during the current dry and hot weather. 'The public is advised to stay hydrated, limit outdoor activities, and wear N95 masks if necessary, particularly for vulnerable groups,' said the statement. The NREB also reminded the public that open burning is a punishable offence under the Natural Resources and Environment Ordinance (Cap. 84 – Laws of Sarawak, Ed. 1958), with penalties of up to RM100,000 or five years' imprisonment, or both. Apart from that, residents are encouraged to assist in extinguishing minor fires and to report open burning cases to the nearest NREB office or via its hotline at 082-447488 or 082-319500 and whistleblower confidentiality is protected under Section 38 of the same Ordinance. Temerloh, Balok Baru record unhealthy air as haze worsens

KUANTAN: Thick smoke has blanketed parts of the state capital after Balok Baru became the second area in Pahang to record unhealthy air quality today. Yesterday, Temerloh also recorded unhealthy air quality levels as haze continues to affect several parts of the country. As of 1pm, the Air Pollutant Index (API) readings in Temerloh and Balok Baru stood at 154 and 133 respectively, compared to 100 and 75 yesterday. Three other monitoring stations - Rompin, Jerantut, and Indera Mahkota - reported moderate API levels ranging between 59 and 91. Air quality in Balok Baru is expected to deteriorate further following a fire reported at a landfill along Jalan Gebeng-Jabor yesterday, with thick clouds of smoke billowing into the sky. It is understood that the Fire and Rescue Department is on site monitoring the situation, although the fire has yet to be fully extinguished. The New Straits Times has contacted the Pahang Fire and Rescue Department and Beserah assemblyman Datuk Andansura Rabu for updates on the size of the burning area and ongoing efforts to douse the fire. An API reading between 0 and 50 is good, 51 to 100 is moderate, while 101 to 200 is classified as unhealthy, 201 to 300 as very unhealthy and more than 300 is hazardous.

Moderate 5.5 earthquake strikes Philippine Islands region

KUALA LUMPUR: A moderate earthquake measuring 5.5 on the Richter scale struck the Philippine Islands region yesterday afternoon. The tremor occurred at 1.45 pm, with its epicenter located 190 km north of Laoag City at a depth of 10 km. The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) confirmed the seismic activity in a statement, clarifying that there was no tsunami threat to Malaysia. Earthquakes in this region are not uncommon due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire, known for frequent tectonic activity. Authorities in the Philippines have yet to report any significant damage or casualties. However, residents in nearby coastal areas were advised to remain cautious. MetMalaysia continues to monitor the situation and will issue updates if necessary. - Bernama
