
Fuel switches were cut off before Air India plane crashed, preliminary report says
The report by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau comes as the airline has been under intense pressure to answer for the crash, which killed all but one passenger on the plane and 29 others on the ground.
Fuel cutoff switches were changed from 'run' to 'cutoff' to engines 1 and 2 on the two-engine Boeing 787-8, a type of aircraft known as the Dreamliner, the report said.
'In the cockpit voice recording, one of the pilots is heard asking the other why did he cutoff. The other pilot responded that he did not do so,' the report reads.
The report is preliminary and a final report could take weeks. The report released Friday does not reach conclusions or recommend actions to operators or manufacturers, and the investigation is continuing.
Only one person survived the crash, British national Ramesh Viswashkumar. His brother, also on the plane, was killed.
In addition to the 241 people on the plane who died, 29 people on the ground were also killed when the plane crashed.
The London-bound Air India Flight 171 was carrying 230 passengers and 12 crew members when it crashed seconds after takeoff from Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in the western Indian city of Ahmedabad. It careened into a building where medical students were sitting down for lunch.
After the switches were changed to cutoff, there were attempts to recover and relight, the report says.
"Engine 1's core deceleration stopped, reversed and started to progress to recovery. Engine 2 was able to relight but could not arrest core speed deceleration and re-introduced fuel repeatedly to increase core speed acceleration and recovery," the report reads.
One pilot then issued a distress call — "mayday mayday mayday" — and the plane lost altitude and crashed, the report says. The aircraft exploding upon impact.
It was the first crash for Boeing's Dreamliner series of aircraft, which went into commercial service in 2011.
The investigation by India's Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau included members of the U.S. National Transportation Safety Board because the crash involved an U.S.-made plane. Last month investigators began analyzing the black boxes after their recovery from the crash site.
After the crash, India's aviation watchdog, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation, ordered Air India to carry out additional maintenance on its Boeing 787-8/9 aircrafts.
But no major concerns were found, the watchdog said on June 17 in a statement.
A week later, the regulator said in a statement it had found multiple cases of 'repeated defects on aircraft indicating ineffective monitoring and inadequate rectification action,' while probing several airports, including at New Delhi and Mumbai, and that it had ordered for changes to be made within seven days.
Reuters reported that Air India's subsidiary airline, Air India Express, was also reprimanded by Indian authorities in March, and is under investigation by the European Union's aviation safety agency for not timely changing engine parts of one of its Airbus aircraft.

Brits don't say 'yard' or 'yard work' The Texan initially observed that Brits don't employ use the terms 'yard' or 'yard work'. He clarified: "Gardening means everything you do in the yard. When I grew up you did yard work, which was mowing, trimming, edging, and a garden was a separate thing." He explained that a garden typically means a space for flowers or vegetables, but in Britain, the term "garden" covers the entire outdoor area - what he would call the yard, lawn, and the spots where flowers and vegetables grow. The expat also discovered that when a Brit mentions having a garden party, they're actually referring to an event held in the yard 2. The soil is 'nice' Moving on, the TikTok creator said: "The second thing is the soil is nice. I did a little bit of gardening today and it was actually somewhat pleasant to be able to pull weeds and dig around and not be hitting rocks after a half inch of top soil, like I would be doing in Texas where I'm from." He found that there's no limestone or dolomite to chip through in his UK garden, unlike in Texas. The American described the soil as "nice, rich dirt." 3. No 'weird' critters in the UK The final difference he noticed is the lack of " weird critters" commonly found in Texas, such as scorpions or venomous snakes. He commented: "I did see quite a few spiders and slugs and snails, [I] even saw two newts." Despite seeing "plenty of critters wandering around" and "lots of good fishing worms" in the soil, he noticed that they go about "minding their own business." The Texan added: "I've been told that there are some snakes here in the UK and possibly one viper, one venomous snake but I've been told that you'll be lucky to ever see a snake, much less a poisonous one." The American man acknowledged that although he might get used to grumbling about the weather, it is actually the mild climate, along with the moisture and humidity, that produces "such beautiful lush gardens and scenery and countryside that we all really love."

Top-secret WW2 plans to liberate Channel Islands sold at auction for £3,800 after attic discovery
Top-secret WW2 British military plans have been sold at a specialist auction in Derbyshire. The rare 47-page document, detailing an ultimately successful operation to liberate the Channel Islands from German Occupation, fetched £3,800 after a bidding war which saw the lot well surpass its £800-£1,200 estimate. The winning offer was made by an unknown telephone buyer following global interest after the item was discovered buried in a cardboard box in an attic. Dated 1 November 1944 under the codename "Operation Nestegg", the plans go into great detail about how the Channel Islands would be freed from years of Nazi rule. Everything from the number of ships to members of the press and even bicycles was accounted for, as were mine sweeping instructions to approach the islands by sea. Although some documents from the British operation are kept in the National Archive, these plans were uncovered in a private collection and subsequently went under the hammer at Hansons Auctioneers in Etwall near Derby. The auction house has described the lot as "extraordinary and rare". What happened in "Operation Nestegg"? The mission was given the go-ahead on 8 May 1945 as Allied Forces declared Victory in Europe following Germany's unconditional surrender. It was carried out by a specialist British military group called Force 135, three 700-man battalions which sailed from Plymouth on HMS destroyers Bulldog and Beagle. They were not sure the message of surrender had been received or accepted in the Channel Islands, so they potentially faced 40,000 German troops stationed behind extensive fortifications, built on Adolf Hitler's instruction to make the Crown Dependencies impenetrable. However, a day later, German troops officially surrendered in Jersey and Guernsey - marking the end of five years of Occupation. Sark followed on 10 May 1945 and later Alderney on 16 May, due to the island's extensive defences.
