Councillor hits out at anti-immigrant graffiti targeting asylum seekers in Belfast
Those responsible for graffiti on the wall at an east Belfast square targeting asylum seekers should be 'ashamed', an Alliance Party councillor has said.
The message scrawled onto a wall alongside crudely painted crosshairs at CS Lewis Square close to the Newtownards Road reads: 'Asylum seekers will be dealt with'.
Alliance Party councillor Peter McReynolds said the message had been reported to police.
"Depressing to see this kind of graffiti appearing near CS Lewis Square in East Belfast, especially in what is a positive and inclusive space,' he posted on his X account.
'I've reported it and it will be removed. Those who did this should be ashamed of themselves.'

The square is named after the renowned Belfast-born author of the Chronicles of Narnia and features seven bronze sculptures from 'The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe', including Aslan, The White Witch, Mr Tumnus, The Beavers, The Robin and The Stone Table.
The PSNI has been approached for comment.
In recent months, a number of anti-immigration protests and rallies have been held in the square, which has also featured in videos posted by social media accounts showing people engaged in vigilante-style activity.
Last week, TikTok took action to ban a number of accounts linked to the activity.
The @irishbreedulsterr handle, which belonged to the Irish Bred Ulster Rared TikTok account, had amassed more than 19,500 followers and over 116,000 likes before it was banned from the platform.
Videos showing individuals aggressively confronting members of ethnic minority communities were being posted on the account until Monday evening.
Anyone trying to access the account is now met with a message informing them the account is banned.
'The account irishbreedulsterr is no longer available,' the message adds.
The PSNI has distanced themselves from those involved, labelling the activity as 'racism pure and simple'.
Members of the group had suggested on social media that they had been working closely with the PSNI, claiming officers have publicly 'thanked them' in the past.
In response, the PSNI released a statement saying: 'Such activity is not protecting this community, it is attempting to control it. It is racism pure and simple.'
Last week, Deputy First Minister Emma Little-Pengelly also condemned the behaviour.
"Any vigilantism is wrong. It must be condemned. It has no place in Northern Ireland,' she said.

PSNI investigating possible offences following pro-Palestine rally in Belfast
The PSNI have said that they are investigating whether any criminal offences were committed following a pro-Palestinian rally in Belfast city centre. Hundreds of people attended the event at Belfast City Hall yesterday, with a small number displaying posters and placards in support of Palestine Action. The PSNI had previously warned that anyone carrying placards or wearing clothing showing support for the proscribed group may be committing an offence. Palestine Action was proscribed by the UK government in July, with the ban meaning that membership of, or support for, the group is a criminal offence under the Terrorism Act 2000. No arrests were made during the "Defend the Right to Protest" rally yesterday. However, police said they attended the event in Donegall Square North area and have launched an investigation. A statement said: "Officers were deployed to the operation, including specially trained evidence gatherers, assisted by the Air Support Unit. "During the demonstration, those involved blocked Chichester Street for a short period of time. "Officers issued a number of warnings in relation to potential offences being committed. "Several individuals in attendance were identified as being suspected of possessing articles indicating support for a proscribed organisation. "Police are reviewing the evidence gathered in order to establish whether any offences have been committed." The PSNI said it also received a report of an assault involving a protester and a member of the public which it was investigating. The force said inquiries are ongoing into this incident and has made an appeal for footage that could assist the investigation. The statement added: "The right to protest, freedom of speech, and freedom of assembly are fundamental human rights. "These are protected in law and allow individuals to engage in peaceful protest, balanced against the rights and protection of others. "We encourage anyone engaging in protest activity or attending demonstrations to do so lawfully and with consideration for other members of the public who wish to go about their daily business. "A full investigation has been launched and police will review all available evidence to establish whether any further offences have been committed." Anyone with information is asked to contact the PSNI. The previous weekend, a 74-year-old woman was arrested for wearing a Palestine Action T-shirt in Belfast at an anti-racism rally. Amnesty International has called on the PSNI to "uphold people's right to protest against the genocide being perpetrated in Gaza".

A judge told the 31-year-old, from Drum Road in Cookstown, that his offending indicated he had a "deviant sexual interest in children." Jason Harkness was handed a 13-year sentence for a total of 15 offences last week. These included raping and both sexually and physically assaulting the girl as well as possessing indecent images of children and extreme pornographic images. Speaking after the sentencing last week, Detective Sergeant Mallon praised the victim's 'bravery.' 'To take a child's innocence away from them in such an abhorrent way is sickening,' he said. "Our thoughts are with the victim today, who was only six years old when these offences began. 'We hope that the bravery shown by this victim in coming forward will encourage others who have experienced any form of sexual abuse to come forward to Police. 'Today's sentencing illustrates that we remain committed to investigating all reports of sexual offences against children and young people, building robust cases to get justice before the courts.' Jason Harkness was jailed today. On Wednesday 13 August, Judge Brian Sherrard at Dungannon Crown Court in Belfast sentenced Harkness to 13 years, split equally between prison and supervised licence. In addition he was told that he will be on the sex offenders' register and will be the subject of a Sexual Offences Prevention Order. Harkness stood trial in Dungannon last year and, despite his claims that the young victim was making up allegations against him, he was convicted by a jury last November. During the trial, the jury heard how his offending emerged when the child became upset during a well-being lesson in school in September 2021 and made disclosures to a teacher. An investigation was launched and in December 2021 the child spoke to the PSNI when she outlined the abuse she has suffered over a period from 2019 to 2021. This included being sexually abused in the shower and being raped when she was aged nine. Harkness was arrested on March 9, 2022 and during a search of his home, officers seized electronic devices. When these were examined, officers located over 1,000 indecent images as well four extreme pornographic images. After deliberating for four hours, the jury returned unanimously guilty verdicts on all 15 charges.
