Kota Kinabalu: The Prime Minister's decision to let Sabah Pakatan Harapan take the lead in facing the coming state election is a wise and timely move, says Upko. Its Youth Chief Felix Joseph Saang said Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's recent statement asking Sabah Pakatan to take the lead in electoral pact negotiations, among other matters, showed his confidence in the political maturity and capability of the coalition's state leaders. The decision to have Datuk Ewon Benedick leading these negotiations also acknowledges the need to let local leaders strategise based on Sabah's political realities and sentiments, he added in a statement Wednesday. On Thursday (May 29), Anwar had said Sabah Pakatan would take charge of discussing seat arrangements, forging pacts and other matters related to the state polls. Joseph said this approach of strategic autonomy would not strengthen the party machinery and allow component parties to discuss seat sharing and cooperation in the field. 'Sabah has different, complex political backgrounds and, therefore, the decision to allow us to have full (authority) in the coming state election enables us to draw up a more inclusive, localised and focused strategy,' he said. He said the main focus was on Sabah's development, strengthening the State and giving more attention to local issues, including rural development, poverty and state rights under the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). Joseph said Ewon would be able to lead the way in forming strategic partnerships among coalitions. Azam Baki confirms possible prosecutions in Sabah graft case

Most Petronas workers to be retrenched are on contract, says Prime Minister

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA: Most of those to be retrenched in the impending 10% cut to Petronas's workforce are contract workers, says Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. 'Most of them are on contract,' he told reporters briefly in Dengkil, Selangor, today. Advertisement He was asked to comment on the national oil and gas company's announcement that it intends to reduce its headcount by more than 5,000 people, and to freeze hiring until December 2026. The retrenchment plan is part of a company-wide restructuring as Petronas looks to reduce costs due to falling crude prices. Petronas president and group CEO Tengku Muhammad Taufik Aziz was reported as saying yesterday that the company sets its budget based on Brent crude oil priced at around US$75 to US$80 per barrel. The global benchmark is currently trading near US$65, down about 13% this year, as trade tensions threaten global growth and OPEC+ restores production. Petronas's net income slid 32% in 2024 after a 21% drop in 2023. Separately, Anwar said he will contact Thai prime minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra this afternoon to discuss the Thai-Cambodia border dispute. 'We will release a statement after that,' he said. Thailand and Cambodia have seen military clashes since 2008, resulting in at least 28 deaths. Sports Toto failed to prove Perlis gaming ban decision, says court

PETALING JAYA: The Kangar High Court dismissed a bid by Sports Toto Malaysia and four others to revive their gaming business in Perlis, saying the application failed to identify any 'official decision' that could be made subject to judicial review. Justice Arik Sanusi Yeop Johari said the applicants had not identified any decision by the Perikatan Nasional-led state government that had impacted their livelihood. Advertisement Instead, they relied on printed and online news reports about the state's purported refusal to issue lottery operators licences for business premises, the judge said. 'The applicants only cited printed and online news reports (about the purported decision). 'These news reports cannot be considered an 'official decision' made by the state government, and thus the application is frivolous,' Arik said in a judgment issued last week. The judgment set out the grounds for a decision he had handed down last year. The applicants – STM Lottery Sdn Bhd, Leong Jenn Kiang, Chin Soo Shian, C Santha and Yip Kok Chyun – are appealing the decision to the Court of Appeal. They are seeking to quash the Kangar municipal council's decision not to renew the licences for their business premises, thereby preventing them from operating their lottery business. They contend that matters relating to the issuance of gaming licences are within the purview of federal law. For that reason, they said the state authorities' decision was irrational, ultra vires the powers vested in the municipal council and the state government, and contravened the Federal Constitution. However, Arik said the application for leave to bring judicial review proceedings was bound to fail for lack of a formal decision. The judge added that even if such a decision had been made, the matter was one of policy. 'The court does inquire into policy making decisions,' he said. The applicants' appeal will come up for case management in the Court of Appeal on June 16. Parallel case in Kedah Meanwhile, a High Court in Alor Setar last year quashed the Kedah government's refusal to renew the licences of several pool betting agents, their companies and officers. The court held that the state government had overstepped its powers under the Federal Constitution in doing so. It said pool betting and lotteries were matters within the federal government's purview, and that the state government had no power to ban them. The state government's appeal from that decision was heard by the Court of Appeal on May 26, which has reserved its judgment.
