Pei Jing defies age with new partner

KUALA LUMPUR: When her mixed doubles partner retired in March, Lai Pei Jing, at 33 years old, had no intention of hanging up her racquet.
And unexpectedly she scripted a heartwarming story for Malaysian badminton after getting a new partner in the untested Jimmy Wong.
Pei Jing is now glad that she didn't take the easy out of retiring alongside her long-time partner Tan Kian Meng, who called it quits after their All England first-round exit five months ago. Pei Jing and Kian Meng were once ranked as high as world No. 5.
Kian Meng has moved on into the online business and is also doing short-term doubles coaching with Badminton England until September.
At the other end, Pei Jing started from scratch again, looking for a new partner, and found the 22-year-old Jimmy.
Formerly a men's doubles player, Jimmy was also without a partner, and he eventually switched to the mixed doubles, joining Pei Jing,
They began by playing in lower-tier International Series (IS) and International Challenge (IC) events, and finished runners-up at the Vietnam IC, Phuket IS and Reunion Open (IC), to build up enough world ranking poins to be eligible for last week's Macau Open.
In Macau, Pei Jing-Jimmy seized their chance. They defied the odds, stunning China's world No. 12 Cheng Xing-Zhang Chi in the last eight before finishing second to Denmark's former world No. 4 Mathias Christensen-Alexandra Boje.
Currently ranked world No. 127, Pei Jing-Jimmy will break into the world's top 100 when the weekly ranking list is released by BWF on Tuesday.
Pei Jing thanked her coach, Ameer Zainuddin, the brother of national women's singles coach Iskandar Zulkarnain Zainuddin, and her physiotherapist, Kheng Fang Yong, after she and Jimmy reached the Macau Open final.
"Never expected that our first Super 300 to be this amazing. Absolutely feeling awesome and blessed to be back on the tour again!" wrote Pei Jing on Instagram.
"Thank you coach @ameerzainuddin for the guidance — you know it's not easy to look after naughty kids like us.
"Thanks @khengfangyong for taking care of our body well all the time, especially the Baby Hulk (Jimmy).
"Gratitude to my partner Jimmy for working so hard in the matches. The hard work has paid off and let's enjoy the moment. Teamwork makes dream work. Let's stay humble, always stay hungry and keep fighting."

Van Der Sar recalls Amri's 'Good Goal' in Johor Bahru

A heartwarming reunion between football legends Edwin Van Der Sar and Amri Yahyah in Johor Bahru has rekindled fond memories of one of Malaysian football's most celebrated moments. The former Manchester United goalkeeper and Malaysia's retired striker met during a recent promotional event in the southern Malaysian city, where their historic encounter from 16 years ago became the center of conversation. Van Der Sar had graciously acknowledged the quality of Amri's famous strike, describing it as 'one of the good goals that I have ever witnessed' when reflecting on their 2009 clash. The touching moment was captured on video, showing the Dutch legend recognizing Amri with a warm handshake while recalling 'seeing him' during that memorable match, drawing laughter from the audience and entertaining reactions from social media users. The goal in question was a spectacular left-footed chip from approximately 25 meters that caught Van Der Sar off guard during the friendly match, helping Malaysia level the score at 2-1 before halftime LRT Shah Alam Line (LRT3) | Amri's heroics didn't end there, as the national team striker, playing under then-coach Datuk K. Strong family support helps Mzava adapt well in Penang

PETALING JAYA: Limbikani Mzava's journey to Penang was more than just a change of scenery, it was a leap of faith supported by his family. Standing tall at 1.90m and already a seasoned international with 60 caps for Malawi since 2009, the 31-year-old centreback is no stranger to challenges. Yet, the call to explore new horizons in Malaysian football came with its own set of excitements and apprehensions. 'I have a good family support, especially my wife,' he said. 'I was anxious but they encouraged me and believed that I can make a difference wherever I go. 'I've been here for a couple of weeks, but I already feel like I've been around for a long time. 'I've blended in with a team full of talented and driven players.' Before his official signing, Mzava had already been keeping fit with a local team in South Africa. His dedication in training was evident as he eyes success with his new team. 'I'm very attacking-minded, defensively strong and very fast. I'm big but quick with everything I do in the pitch, which comes with being unpredictable and bold,' said Mzava. 'More than anything I'd like to believe I blend in very easily with my teammates.' He is looking forward to Penang's first game against Terengganu at the City Stadium, Georgetown, on Aug 10. Penang were 10th last season with 26 points.

Azeem hopes to turn the tide in India

KUALA LUMPUR: National sprinter Mohd Azeem Fahmi is set to compete in next week's Indian Open, determined to bounce back from his disappointing outing at last month's Rhine-Ruhr World University Games. Despite making history at the Games by becoming the first Malaysian to make the men's 100m final and finishing fourth in 10.35s, the 21-year-old feels that it did not reflect his true performance, having clocked a season best of 10.20s in the United States in May.
