Amul partners with COVAP to launch milk in Spain, eyes expansion in Europe

The Gujarat Cooperative Milk Marketing Federation (Amul), marketer of products under the brand name Amul, announced a strategic partnership with Spain's Cooperativa Ganadera del Valle de los Pedroches (COVAP) to introduce its flagship milk product in Spain and the European Union, the Mint reported.
The rollout will begin in Madrid and Barcelona, followed by cities including Malaga, Valencia, Alicante, Seville, Córdoba, and Lisbon in Portugal. In the future, Amul plans to expand into other European markets like Germany, Italy, and Switzerland.
The official launch event was held at the Embassy of India in Madrid. Amul's Managing Director, Jayen Mehta, said 'This association will ensure all our Spanish consumers will be nourished and energised with the goodness of Amul Milk. This is the first time that Amul fresh milk is being launched in Europe.'
Highlighting India's broader vision for global dairy expansion, Mehta said, 'It is our great pleasure to bring the taste of India to the world, in alignment with the vision of our Honourable Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, to make Amul a global dairy brand…'
COVAP, founded in 1959 in Pozoblanco, Córdoba, is a leading Spanish cooperative with more than 2,000 active farmer-members. Its advanced dairy plant processes over 400 million litres of milk annually, exporting to more than 30 countries, including the US, UK, and parts of Asia.
Commenting on the collaboration, COVAP President Ricardo Delgado Vizcaíno said, 'This partnership with Amul allows us to work with another cooperative to help them grow their brand in Spain, benefitting not only our dairy farmer members but those in India as well..."
Amul: India's dairy powerhouse
Amul, the world's largest farmer-owned dairy cooperative with 3.6 million members, processes over 12 billion litres of milk annually through its 112 dairy plants across India. It boasts a turnover exceeding $11 billion and is recognised as the world's strongest dairy brand by global rankings.
In April this year, Amul raised the price of its fresh pouch milk by ₹2 per litre across the country. This represents a 3–4 per cent increase in the maximum retail price, which the cooperative emphasised is significantly below the average rate of food inflation.
In its statement, Amul highlighted that it distributes 80 paise of every rupee earned from the sale of milk and milk products back to milk producers.
'The price revision shall help in sustaining remunerative milk prices to our milk producers and to encourage them for higher milk production,' the statement said.
Meanwhile, Mother Dairy also implemented a similar price hike of ₹2 per litre.
The release further said that Amul had extended benefits to consumers last year by adding 50 ml and 100 ml extra milk to 1-litre and 2-litre packs for nearly five months. Additionally, the price of 1-litre packs was reduced by ₹1 in all markets from January. Amul clarified that there had been no price increase in fresh pouch milk since June 2024.

OKLAHOMA CITY — The NBA's talks with FIBA and other entities about the process of adding a new league in Europe are continuing, Commissioner Adam Silver said, though he noted that it may take at least a couple more years to turn the ideas into reality. Silver spoke at a league event to unveil a refurbished Boys & Girls Club in Oklahoma City on Friday — an off day for the NBA Finals — and said it's difficult to put a specific timeline on the Europe plans. 'I will say it's measured in years, not months,' Silver said. 'So, we're at least a couple years away from launching. It would be an enormous undertaking. And while we want to move forward at a deliberate pace, we also want to make sure that we're consulting with all the appropriate stakeholders, meaning the existing league, its teams, European players, media companies, marketing partners. There's a lot of work to be done.' Silver and FIBA secretary general Andreas Zagklis announced in March that the league and the game's governing body are finally taking long-awaited steps to form a new league, with an initial target of 16 teams. It had been talked about for years, and decades even on some levels. And since the NBA and FIBA went public with their idea to move forward, talks have gotten more constructive, Silver said. Silver said the NBA has been talking directly with the EuroLeague and with some member clubs about a partnership. It's his preference that the NBA work with the existing league on some level, though it's still too early to say exactly what that means. 'Either way, we continue to feel there are an enormous number of underserved basketball fans in Europe and that there's a strong opportunity to have another league styled after the NBA,' Silver said. About one in every six current NBA players hails from Europe, including Denver's Nikola Jokic and Milwaukee's Giannis Antetokounmpo — who have combined for five of the last seven MVP awards — along with the Los Angeles Lakers' Luka Doncic and San Antonio's Victor Wembanyama . The NBA's board of governors will talk more about next steps with the European plans in July at their scheduled meeting in Las Vegas, Silver said. It's possible that the European venture could be unveiled in some way — or possibly start — around the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, just given how much attention will be on international basketball at that time. 'That might be a good launching pad for an announcement around a new competition,' Silver said. Some of the cities that are expected to have interest in being part of the new venture include London, Manchester, Rome and Munich. There will be others, of course. 'We haven't had direct conversations yet,' Silver said. N ashik: The state has achieved a 15% increase in its agricultural, processed, and food product exports, hitting an all-time high of Rs47,017 crore in the financial year 2024-25. This significant surge solidifies the state's position as a leading agricultural exporter. While the export volume for the financial year 2024-25 stood at 54.14 lakh tonnes, a slight dip from the 55.79 lakh tonnes recorded in 2023-24 fiscal, the substantial rise in value underscores a highly successful year. This data comes from the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), which operates under the Union Commerce Ministry. In the previous fiscal year (2023-24), the state's exports in this segment were around Rs40,898 crore. The state's diverse export portfolio includes a wide array of products such as bananas, grapes, onions, various other fruits, bovine meat, alcoholic beverages, and rice. The export of fresh fruits also registered a 17% rise, from Rs8,100 crore in 2023-24 to Rs9,500 crore in 2024-25. The export of fresh fruits in 2024-25 includes bananas (Rs2,839 crore), grapes (Rs2,781 crore), pomegranates (Rs371 crore), and others (Rs3,405 crore). Interestingly, exports of other fruits increased by 32% to Rs3,405 crore in 2024-25 as against Rs2,566 crore in the previous year. Other exports include pulses at Rs2,100 crore, cereal preparations at Rs2,093.43 crore, jaggery and confectionery at Rs1,620 crore, onions at Rs1,436 crore, and alcoholic beverages at Rs1,353.52 crore. Vice-president of Horticultural Produce Exporters' Association (HPEA) Vikash Singh said the rise in export is because of the incentives being given by the Centre and state in the food sector. "There is huge potential for export of bananas, and govt needs to focus on increasing its export," he said. "The APEDA has been taking measures to boost export of grapes for the past decade, particularly in European countries, and this is showing results. Just like grapes, the APEDA also needs to find new markets to increase the export of onions, particularly in European countries," he added. Singh further said the Centre should also provide green lanes at the JNPT Mumbai for containers of perishable goods for faster clearance. "In 2014, the Centre had made an announcement about a separate green lane for faster clearance for containers of perishable goods, but it is yet to be executed," he said.
