Denzel Washington Surprised With Honorary Palme d'Or at Cannes
Ahead of an out-of-competition screening of his latest film, Spike Lee's Highest 2 Lowest, fest director Thierry Frémaux surprised the Oscar winner with the honor.

Lee presented Washington with the honor after an introduction from Frémaux. The presentation saw Washington receive a huge standing ovation.
'This is a total surprise for me, so I'm emotional. It's a great opportunity to collaborate with my brother once again, brother from another mother, and to be here once again in Cannes,' Washington said in part, after Lee previously referred to Washington as his brother and expressed his love for . 'We're a very privileged group in this room that we get to make movies and wear tuxedos and nice clothes and dress up and get paid for it as well. We're just blessed beyond measure. I'm blessed beyond measure. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all.'
Highest 2 Lowest marks Washington and Lee's first film together in nearly 20 years and fifth collaboration overall.
Washington is making a quick stop at Cannes in between performances of Othello on Broadway. The play, in which he stars opposite Jake Gyllenhaal, is dark on Mondays like most Broadway productions.
An honorary Palme was presented on the opening night of this year's fest to Robert De Niro, but that was announced in advance, as have been all honorary Palme presentations since 2022, when Fremaux handed an unannounced one to Tom Cruise.
Other previous recipients of Cannes' honorary Palme, which was first presented in 2002, include Catherine Deneuve, Jane Fonda, Clint Eastwood, Agnès Varda, Jodie Foster, Harrison Ford, Michael Douglas and, last year, Meryl Streep and George Lucas. Also last year, Studio Ghibli became the first organization, as opposed to individual, to receive the honor.
Washington is a two-time Oscar winner, receiving the Academy Award for best supporting actor for his role in Glory and best actor for his work in Training Day. He also received an Oscar nomination for best picture for the film adaptation of Fences, which he also directed.
Among other accolades, he's also received a Presidential Medal of Freedom and Tony Award, for the Broadway revival of Fences, though he recently missed out on a chance at another Tony as his latest production of Othello failed to receive any Tony nods.

Beast Mode's remark is potentially a reference to a recent trending TikTok conversation that sees social media users make a case that white people with ginger hair are actually Black, though Lynch himself does not explicitly mention it on the podcast. The conversation progressed from there, with Darnold, who signed a three-year deal with the Seahawks in March reported to be worth over $100 million, discussing his storied path to Seattle. As Darnold put it, it's felt "amazing" to be welcomed by both the team and the fans. "At the end of the day, everywhere I've gone throughout my journey whether it was in New York or Carolina or San Francisco then last year in Minnesota, I've been grateful for every opportunity that I've ever gotten to step on the filed. I truly mean that," Darnold explained. "I don't take that opportunity lightly. I just love the opportunities that I get and I don't take them for granted. But at the same time, yeah, I didn't play my best football my first four years in the NFL." When Beast Mode pushed back on this self-assessment, citing Vikings stats from 2024, Darnold credited his resurgence as a quarterback, at least in part, to the time he spent in San Francisco. "I learned a ton of great football," he said, as seen in the full interview below. The Seahawks are set to begin their regular season on September 7 with a home game against the 49ers. When discussing his performance, which has already started bringing in rave reviews, and what it could mean for awards season, the two-time Academy Award winner said he couldn't be bothered to care about accolades at this point in his life. 'I don't do it for Oscars. I don't care about that kind of stuff,' Washington said to Complex . 'I've been at this a long time, and there's time when I won and shouldn't have won and then didn't win and should've won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward. I'm not that interested in Oscars. People ask me, 'Where do I keep it?' Well, next to the other one. I'm not bragging! Just telling you how I feel about it. On my last day, [Oscars] aren't going to do me a bit of good.' Washington also made it clear that he doesn't give a hootennay about being canceled, nor will he be playing the social media game at his age. In an interview with Complex , he let it be known that he never signed up for all the fanfare. 'What made public support so important to begin with?' he said. 'I don't care who's following who. You can't lead and follow at the same time, and you can't follow and lead at the same time. I don't follow anybody. I follow the heavenly spirit. I follow God, I don't follow man. I have faith in God. I have hope in man, but look around, it ain't working out so well.' He continued, 'You can't be canceled if you haven't signed up. Don't sign up. Don't get me started. Gary Oldman believes he'd be ‘dead or institutionalized' if he didn't give up booze 28 years ago
Gary Oldman is getting candid about his sobriety. The 'Slow Horses' star opened up about his battle with alcoholism and getting sober 28 years ago during an interview with The Hollywood Reporter published Monday, Aug. 18. 'I'm in a very good place at the moment, and a lot of that is to do with sobriety,' Oldman, 67, began. 'It's been 28 years. There was a point when I didn't think I could've gone 28 seconds without a drink.'
