While the PM reaches this milestone, his party faces some challenges on the domestic political front. First up is Bihar, where the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has added momentum to the Opposition's attempts to corner the NDA government. While the ruling alliance is united in public, concerns have been expressed internally about how the voter verification drive will unfold, given that voters have been confused and have expressed anxiety about the entire exercise, as The Indian Express reported in a recent series from the state. Now, JD(U) MP Giridhari Yadav has become the first NDA parliamentarian to publicly criticise the SIR. While Yadav may not be a political heavyweight, the BJP will hope that cracks do not appear in the Bihar alliance.
Opposition RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav has said the party may consider a poll boycott over the SIR, and the Congress Bihar in-charge, Krishna Allavaru, has said 'all avenues are open'. In the context of the Congress and its senior leadership repeatedly raising questions on the integrity of recent electoral processes, whether this turns into a serious option for the Mahagathbandhan will be one of the political stories to watch out for on Friday and the days to come. In all likelihood, this will end up playing into the hands of the BJP and give it breathing space to manoeuvre and counterattack the Opposition when it must be feeling the heat in Bihar.
The second challenge for the BJP is managing the optics following the surprising resignation of Jagdeep Dhankhar as Vice-President earlier this week. Though the jury is out on why Dhankar stepped down so suddenly, Neerja Chowdhury writes in her latest column that the BJP won't be happy with the fact that it has to admit that it could not manage someone it had chosen for the second-highest Constitutional post.
Third, the BJP faces a tough test in less than a year in West Bengal, one of the states where the SIR is expected to cause a political upheaval if held. Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) chairperson Mamata Banerjee has already declared she won't allow the exercise in the state, saying it will lead to the exclusion of genuine voters.
The TMC chief has also instructed her party to start mobilising on the issue of detention of Bangla-speaking migrants in various BJP-ruled states. At her Martyrs' Day rally in Kolkata on July 21, Banerjee targeted the BJP as an anti-Bengali party allegedly hounding Bangla speakers and labelling them as Bangladeshis. She alleged the BJP had unleashed 'linguistic terrorism' on Bangla speakers and announced that starting July 27, the party would hold protests each weekend to protest this injustice. She reiterated her message on Thursday.
The narrative built around Bengali pride and painting it as a party of outsiders had proved costly for the BJP in the 2021 elections and could hurt its chances in next year's elections too. How the party responds to this while maintaining its appeal to its core voter base about being tough on undocumented immigration will be one of the things to watch out for.

She asked whether it is not responsibility of the PM, the Home Minister, the Defence Minister, and the National Security Advisor to ensure people's security. 'Did the government not know thousands of tourists go to Baisaran Valley… why there was no security there? Why were they left at God's mercy? Was no government agency in the know that such a dastardly terror attack is going to happen and a plot is being hatched in Pakistan," she asked. 'It is a big failure of our government and intelligence agencies. Who will take responsibility of this? Has anyone resigned? They keep talking about past but who will answer about what is happening in present," she said. The Wayanad MP also accused the Central government of consistently evading questions, saying it shows no sense of accountability to the people. 'The truth is that they have no place for the public in their heart. For them, everything is politics, publicity," she claimed.

KCR asks partymen to step up protest against Banakacherla
Hyderabad: Reiterating that Telangana people had taken note that Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy was working his Andhra Pradesh counterpart N Chandrababu Naidu and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BRS chief K Chandrashekar Rao on Tuesday called upon the party cadre take up statewide protest programs on Banakacherla project. Earlier the BRS president had a long meeting with senior leaders of the party, including senior leaders like working president K T Rama Rao, T Harish Rao and G Jagadish Reddy. Chandrashekar Rao said that as the state government was a complete failure across segments and to avoid agrarian crisis that the state stares at, there should be a no holds barred fight by the party. He said that the Banakacherla project, which was detrimental to the interests of the state, should be stopped, towards which the task was cut out for the party cadre. KCR said it was unfortunate that the state government was implementing policies that were proving beneficial to Andhra Pradesh and against the farmers of the state. 'Our party leaders should expose the government which was doing gross injustice to the state. They should explain to the people that the government had deliberately dried up the Kaleshwaram project and did not give water during the sowing time,' he said. The government should start the Kannepally pumphouse and fill projects with water. He also said that there was a shortage of urea in the state. The party leaders should inform the people that ignoring the agriculture sector was an unpardonable act. 'The Congress and BJP were passing time by blaming each other. BRS will always stand by the people of Telangana,' KCR affirmed.

Voter roll revision in BIHAR: Will step in if there's mass exclusion says SC
New Delhi: Responding to the apprehensions that 65 lakh voters are going to be excluded from the draft list to be published by the Election Commission of India in the Bihar Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process, the Supreme Court on Tuesday orally said that if there is any mass exclusion, then the court will step in. A bench comprising Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi listed the petitions challenging the Bihar SIR for hearing on August 12 and 13. Advocate Prashant Bhushan, appearing for the Association for Democratic Reforms, told the Court about the ECI's statement that 65 lakh persons have not submitted the enumeration forms during the SIR process as they are either dead or have permanently shifted elsewhere. Bhushan told the bench that these persons will have to apply afresh for inclusion in the list. Justice Surya Kant, observing that the Election Commission of India, being a Constitutional authority, will be deemed to act in accordance with the law, assured that the Court will hear the concerns. 'We are here, we will hear you,' Justice Kant assured. Justice Bagchi expressed, 'Jan 2025 list is the starting point if there was no SIR. Draft list will be published by ECI. Your apprehension is 65 lakh odd voters will not (ECI) are seeking correction vis-a-vis 2025 entry. We are overviewing the thing as a judicial authority. If there is mass exclusion, we will immediately step in. Bring 15 people saying they are alive.'
