Rams could target this high-profile CB during 2026 free agency
The 2025 NFL season hasn't started yet, but the Los Angeles Rams' most dire roster needs likely won't be resolved by the end of the year unless they make another major trade. The are of main concern going into the year is the secondary, and a few major players are heading into final year of their contracts as well: safeties Quentin Lake and Kamren Curl, cornerbacks Ahkello Witherspoon, Cobie Durant and Derion Kendrick. So, it stands to reason that the Rams will likely target that position in the 2026 draft and/or free agency. Bleacher Report's Alex Ballentine writes that one big-named cornerback option could be on the table for L.A in DaRond Bland of the Dallas Cowboys. The Rams were expected to be in on the Jalen Ramsey trade market. Unfortunately, only having $19.5 million in cap space this season would have made it hard to take on his contract. The good news is the Rams have the fourth-highest projected cap space for 2026 right now, which means they could get aggressive in landing help at a premium position next season. Thus far, the Cowboys haven't locked up DaRon Bland on an extension. With Trevon Diggs already on the books and Micah Parsons requesting a trade, there's a decent chance he hits the market. Bland has been phenomenal in his three NFL seasons. He tallied 14 interceptions in his first 32 games, including an NFL-leading nine in 2023. He also returned five for touchdowns that season and made the Pro Bowl and first-team All-Pro squad. Bland sustained a stress fracture in his foot before the 2024 season, though, and missed the first 10 games of the season. He finished without an interception but defended five passes, forced one fumble and recovered a fumble. The price for Bland could be high — Sauce Gardner and Derek Stingley signed deals worth $30 million a year recently. But if the Rams want stardom in the secondary, they may need to break the bank for Bland if they don't want to use one of their two first-round draft picks on a cornerback.

How Nebraska football performed in week one of the NFL preseason
The first week of the 2025 NFL preseason is in the books, and many former athletes from Nebraska either stepped on the professional field for the first time or returned to action once more. Regardless of which, many Huskers made their impressions. Find an entire week one breakdown of the NFL Preseason by scrolling below. Adrian Martinez, Quarterback, New York Jets Martinez started his second preseason with the New York Jets on Saturday night against the Green Bay Packers. He led the Jets in the air, tossing 11 completions off 16 attempts for 152 yards and a touchdown. He also took off twice, racking up 13 yards. The quarterback signed with the Jets back in January after an MVP season with the Birmingham Stallions of the United Football League in 2024. Martinez tossed for 1,749 yards and 15 touchdowns and led the UFL in rushing with 528 yards. Ameer Abdullah, Running Back, San Francisco 49ers Abdullah joined the San Francisco 49ers at the start of August but saw action from both the backfield and kickoff in Saturday's clash against the Denver Broncos. He finished with four carries for 20 yards and returned one kickoff back for 22 yards. However, he also fumbled in the third quarter, halting San Francisco's drive. Abdullah has been making an impact with each NFL team he's joined since being drafted in 2015. He is now only six yards away from cracking the 2,000-yard rushing mark in his NFL career and is also 38 yards away from reaching 1,500 career receiving yards. Samori Toure, Wide Receiver, Chicago Bears Toure enters his fourth season in the NFL and his second with the Chicago Bears. In the team's tie against the Miami Dolphins, he snatched one catch for 26 yards, the biggest play of the day for Chicago. Toure started his NFL career with the Green Bay Packers after being drafted in the seventh round of the 2022 draft. He's totaled 13 catches for 160 yards and a touchdown in his career. Though he joined Chicago last season, he did not play a single down. Wan'Dale Robinson, Wide Receiver, New York Giants Robinson also enters his fourth season in the NFL, all with the New York Giants. He played a little in the team's preseason matchup with the Buffalo Bills, hauling in one catch for 11 yards. Robinson is coming off his best season with the Giants. Last year, he hauled in 93 catches for 699 yards for three touchdowns. At Nebraska, Robinson totaled 91 catches for 914 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 580 yards and four touchdowns. Thomas Fidone II, Tight End, New York Giants Fidone II made his NFL preseason debut on Saturday with the Giants and put together a strong opening act. He hauled three passes for 22 yards and a two-point conversion. The seventh-round draft pick played in 26 games for Nebraska, starting in 17, and tallied 61 catches for 633 yards and four touchdowns. Travis Vokolek, Tight End, Arizona Cardinals Vokolek is in his third season in the NFL, now with the Arizona Cardinals, and took the field in the team's showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs. He hauled in two catches for 23 yards for the Cardinals in the team's win. At Nebraska, Vokolek played in 27 games and earned 16 starts. He finished his career with the Huskers with 40 catches for 458 yards and two touchdowns. Jack Stoll, Tight End, New Orleans Saints Stoll begins a new season with a new team after being a part of the Philadelphia Eagles from 2021 to 2024. In the New Orleans Saints' loss to the Los Angeles Chargers, he snatched one catch for one yard. In his NFL career, he's racked up 22 catches for 193 yards. At Nebraska, he finished with 61 catches for 657 yards and six touchdowns across 43 games. Ty Robinson, Defensive Line, Philadelphia Eagles Selected in the fourth round in the 2025 NFL Draft, Robinson recorded two tackles and a sack in the Philadelphia Eagles' bout with the Cincinnati Bengals. Robinson signed a four-year, $5.1 million deal with a $1 million signing bonus back in May with the Eagles after his impressive 2024 season at Nebraska. In 13 games, he recorded 37 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, and seven sacks. Ben Stille, Defensive Line, Miami Dolphins Stille returns to the Miami Dolphins after bouncing around the NFL since 2022. In the team's tie with the Chicago Bears, he recorded one solo tackle. During his NFL tenure, he has played in 18 games, tallying 17 tackles and two sacks. At Nebraska, he racked up 146 total tackles, 30 tackles for loss and 14.5 sacks. Garrett Nelson, Linebacker, Denver Broncos Nelson also joined his current team at the start of August, signing with the Denver Broncos ahead of their preseason match with the 49ers. He recorded four solo tackles for the Broncos. Nelson initially entered the NFL in 2023, getting picked up by the Miami Dolphins after going undrafted. He then joined the UFL's San Antonio Brahmas in 2024 and recorded 15 tackles, one tackle for loss, and a forced fumble in eight games during the 2025 season. John Bullock, Linebacker, Tampa Bay Buccaneers Bullock put up two solo tackles and two passes defended in his NFL preseason debut with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He started all 13 games in 2024 for Nebraska, setting career highs in tackles (70), tackles for loss (10), pass breakups (5) sacks (4), and interceptions (1). Bullock ranked third on the team in tackles and was second in TFLs and pass breakups and third in sacks. He also co-led the team in forced fumbles with two. Luke Gifford, Linebacker, San Francisco 49ers Luke Gifford is now in his seventh season in the NFL and his first with the 49ers. In the team's loss to Denver, he recorded two tackles, one solo and one tackle-for-loss. Prior to the 49ers, Gifford spent two seasons with the Tennessee Titans and four with the Dallas Cowboys. In his career, he's racked up 95 tackles, one forced fumble and one interception. In his final season at Nebraska, Gifford played in all 12 games, totaling a career-high 62 tackles, 13 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks, the latter tying for the highest total by a Husker linebacker since the 2005 season. Ochaun Mathis, Linebacker, Philadelphia Eagles Mathis made one tackle in the Eagles win over the Bengals. The sixth-round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft made stops with the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots. Now, Mathis is in his second season with the Eagles, In his lone season at Nebraska, he finished second on the team in sacks (3.5) and added 5.0 tackles for loss and 50 total tackles with two pass breakups. Lamar Jackson, Cornerback, Atlanta Falcons Lamar Jackson has made the rounds in the NFL, now with his sixth team, the Atlanta Falcons. He made four tackles in the team's clash with the Detroit Lions, three solo. In his NFL career, Jackson tallied 31 tackles, 29 solo, across 16 games. At Nebraska, he started every game in his final season, and recorded 40 tackles, 12 pass breakups, four TFLs, three interceptions, two fumble recoveries, one sack, and one forced fumble. Isaac Gifford, Safety, Carolina Panthers Isaac Gifford made an impression in his NFL preseason debut, despite the Carolina Panthers falling big to the Cleveland Browns. He tallied five tackles for the Panthers, including three solo. In his Nebraska career, Gifford tallied 240 tackles, 126 solo, 14 passes defended, 13 passes broken up, and one interception. Omar Brown, Safety, Green Bay Packers Brown is in his second season of NFL play. In the Green Bay Packers' loss to the New York Jets, Brown totaled four tackles, one solo. Brown played in all 12 games with eight starts in his final season. He tied for second on the team with 51 tackles while adding three tackles for loss, three pass breakups, two forced fumbles, one fumble recovery and one interception. DiCaprio Bootle, Cornerback, Detroit Lions After being picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs in 2021, Bootle traveled across the NFL, making stops in Carolina and Los Angeles. His current stop, the Detroit Lions, is off to a solid start, earning three solo tackles against the Falcons. In his NFL tenure, Bootle racked up 28 total tackles, 23 solo and two passes defended across 22 total games. For the Huskers, he started every game in his senior year, finishing with 25 tackles, a half tackle for loss, five pass breakups, and one interception. Quinton Newsome, Cornerback, Denver Broncos In his second season with the Broncos, Newsome snatched one solo tackle in the win over San Francisco. In his final season with Nebraska, he played in 11 games, earning 10 starts, 37 tackles, 20 solo, four passes defended, three passes broken up, and his only interception in his Husker career. Travis Hunter's NFL debut brings him a step closer to the unthinkable
Good morning, and welcome back to The Morning Win. With two more games Sunday, Week 1 of the NFL preseason is in the books. On to Week 2. Before the calendar flips, though, we need to acknowledge something that's taking place that a lot of us didn't think was possible. Something I still have a great deal of skepticism about but have to admit it's looking more and more likely to happen. Travis Hunter is doing it, y'all. He's playing both sides of the ball in the NFL. Now, listen, he did it in limited action in a single preseason game, so I don't want to get too far ahead of ourselves. The No. 2 overall pick took 11 snaps on offense and eight snaps on defense in Saturday's game against the Pittsburgh Steelers, with a series off in between his appearance on each side. But the way he was deployed makes it clear the Jacksonville Jaguars at least want to give him the opportunity to have an impact on both sides. That's the part that has me so locked in what happens next. MIC'D UP: Shedeur Sanders chats up Myles Garrett On Saturday, Hunter's impact was minimal. In his lone offensive series, he had two catches for nine yards. In two defensive series, he wasn't targeted and only stood out for a missed tackle. Those splits, though, make you wonder. Are the Jaguars really going to play Hunter an equal amount on each side of the ball? That's the part I remain skeptical about. I have no doubt Hunter can be a good and maybe even great wide receiver or cornerback in the NFL. But to be good at both while playing both a close to equal amount? I don't believe Hunter or anyone else could even stay healthy long enough to try. Which is why I'm so curious to see how the Jaguars move forward this preseason. It's possible his near-even split on limited snaps was intentional to see exactly what they have before making a decision either way. But I'd be surprised if it results in anything other than Hunter gaining a permanent starting spot on one side of the ball (probably alongside Trevor Lawrence) while carving out a limited role on the other. Not because he didn't prove to be good enough to do both. It'll be for his own preservation. A'ja Wilson makes WNBA history Again. A'ja Wilson made WNBA history again. This time, the three-time MVP put her name in the record books as the first player in WNBA history to record 30-plus points and 20-plus rebounds in a single game. Wilson went for 32 and 20 Sunday against the Connecticut Sun, helping the Las Vegas Aces erase a 12-point deficit for their fourth win in a row and sixth in the last seven games. They're rolling, and a big part of that is Wilson and her 29-13 average over the last three games. This 30-20 game just adds to the legend that is A'ja Wilson, who already owns the WNBA's single-season scoring and rebound records.
