Fortuna Mining explores investments in Guinea for gold mining opportunities

Yahoo07-05-2025
Fortuna Mining is reportedly exploring new opportunities in Guinea following its strategic exit from Burkina Faso, where it faced regulatory instability and high security costs.
The Canadian mining company, currently not established in Guinea, is actively conducting site visits and engaging with local authorities to seek gold mining prospects, according to a report by Reuters.
Fortuna CEO Jorge Ganoza was quoted by the news agency as saying: "We find Guinea to be a place we would invest today.'
A portion of the company's increasing exploration budget is earmarked for Guinea, where Ganoza sees 'a lot of room for discovery'.
This move underscores the shifting dynamics in West Africa's mining landscape, where military-led governments are revising mining codes and grappling with jihadist threats.
Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger, has experienced military coups since 2020, leading to new mining codes aimed at bolstering local control.
These countries have also taken assertive measures against foreign mining companies, including arrests and asset seizures.
In contrast, Guinea, under military rule since a 2021 coup, has not revised its mining code but has exerted pressure on foreign companies regarding project timelines.
"We don't see the same situations as we see today in Mali or Burkina Faso or Niger," Ganoza added.
Fortuna's recent departure from Burkina Faso involved selling the Yaramoko gold mine for $130m (C$179.32m), despite losing an estimated 70,000oz of gold production.
Ganoza described the sale as 'a very compelling offer', given the mine's dwindling reserves and the $7m annual security costs incurred due to jihadist threats.
The company had to adopt a 'complete fly-in, fly-out basis for all personnel' in Burkina Faso, with ground transportation deemed too risky.
Moreover, Ganoza criticised the Burkinabe Government's demand for up to 30% state participation in mining companies as part of the new mining code implemented in July 2024, which he believes is not competitive, the report said.
Fortuna's withdrawal from Burkina Faso follows a similar move by Endeavour Mining last year.
Globally, Fortuna is boosting its exploration and project development investment to $51m this year, up from $41m in 2024.
Besides Guinea, the company is focusing on Senegal's Diamba Sud gold project and expanding its operations in Ivory Coast, where its flagship Seguela gold mine is situated.

Canadian Canola Producers ‘Deeply Disappointed' by China's New Tariffs, Call for Ottawa's Support

Organizations representing Canadian canola producers are raising concerns about the impact of newly announced Chinese tariffs, saying that the latest duties, combined with earlier restrictions imposed this year, have effectively shut Canada out of its second largest canola export market. China's Ministry of Commerce announced on Aug. 12 it would impose 75.8 percent temporary tariffs on Canadian canola, starting on Aug. 14. The tariffs are part of a preliminary ruling from an anti-dumping investigation the regime launched last year, which the ministry says found 'that canola imported from Canada is being dumped,' affecting China's domestic industry. Dumping involves selling products to another country at a price below their normal value.

Dollar slips as investors eye September Fed cut

By Rae Wee SINGAPORE (Reuters) -The dollar weakened on Wednesday after a tame reading on U.S. inflation bolstered expectations of a Federal Reserve rate cut next month, with President Donald Trump's attempts to extend his grip over U.S. institutions also undermining the currency. U.S. consumer prices increased marginally in July, data showed on Tuesday, in line with forecasts and as the pass-through from Trump's sweeping tariffs to goods prices has so far been limited. Investors eyeing imminent Fed cuts cheered the data and moved to price in a 98% chance the central bank would ease rates next month, which in turn dragged on the dollar. Against the yen, the dollar was last 0.05% lower at 147.76, while the euro was steady at $1.1676, having risen 0.5% in the previous session. The dollar index last stood at 98.08, after falling roughly 0.5% on Tuesday. "The July CPI report showed less evidence of tariff pass-through to consumer prices...(but) I think a September rate cut is less than certain, probably not as certain as current market pricing," said Carol Kong, a currency strategist at Commonwealth Bank of Australia. "As the last payroll shows, one report can be sufficient to move the policy debate to one side or another. So I think we still have to wait until the remaining data to print before making a strong case about a rate cut or an on hold decision." U.S. Treasury yields similarly fell on the heightened rate cut expectations, with the two-year yield last at 3.7371%, having swung in a range of nearly 10 basis points on Tuesday. The benchmark 10-year yield was little changed at 4.2965%. [US/] Also eroding investor confidence in the dollar were fresh attempts by Trump to undermine Fed independence, after White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt said on Tuesday that the U.S. president was considering a lawsuit against Fed Chair Jerome Powell in relation to his management of renovations at the central bank's Washington headquarters. Trump has been at loggerheads with Powell and has repeatedly lambasted the Fed Chair for not easing rates sooner. The president also hit out at Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon, saying the bank had been wrong to predict U.S. tariffs would hurt the economy and questioned whether Solomon should lead the Wall Street institution. Elsewhere, sterling gained 0.03% to $1.3504. Britain's jobs market weakened again though wage growth stayed strong, according to data on Tuesday, underscoring why the Bank of England is so cautious about cutting interest rates. "(The) UK jobs figures pointed to the labour market remaining in fragile shape," said Michael Brown, senior research strategist at Pepperstone. "My base case still has the next 25bp cut pencilled in for November, though there is a long way to go, and a lot of data to come, before then." In other currencies, the Australian dollar dipped 0.05% to $0.6526, while the New Zealand dollar fell 0.03% to $0.5953. The Reserve Bank of Australia on Tuesday cut interest rates as expected, and signalled further policy easing might be needed to meet its inflation and employment goals as the economy lost some momentum. Tesla watchers warn that major struggle lies ahead for Elon Musk's company: 'Dramatically different'

Tesla continues to set records for all the wrong reasons. What's happening? The company's second-quarter revenue dropped 12% to $22.5 billion, its biggest decline in over 10 years, Forbes reported July 23 via Reuters. Vehicle deliveries slid 13% year over year, marking a second straight new low. Tesla's net income was down 16%, and it lost almost $600 million in regulatory credit sales. Wedbush Securities analyst Dan Ives called it a "dramatically different [scenario] than three months ago" and said investors would look to the company's artificial intelligence initiatives and potential investment in xAI, per Forbes. Why is this important? If the electric vehicle giant continues this trend, it may have to complete the pivot to autonomous services and robotics that CEO Elon Musk has long floated. Characteristically, these musings have not been based in reality. As Forbes noted, he said a Tesla-backed ride-hailing platform would be available to hundreds of millions of Americans by the end of 2025. A limited rollout of Robotaxis in Austin, Texas, however, has produced ignominy due to dangerous and bizarre maneuvers. While no one is being forced into self-driving cabs, the poor performance is seemingly hurting Tesla's brand. Plummeting sales could impede the general public's adoption of EVs, a necessary step in the transition from dirty energy sources. Industries that rely on this power, which pollutes the atmosphere with heat-trapping gases, are driving rising global temperatures. Among the consequences are more frequent and severe extreme weather events that are wreaking havoc on the homeowners insurance market. What's being done about Tesla's slump? As noted, Musk may be using the sales slowdown as an opportunity to transition the company toward other endeavors. Tesla stock is down for the year but has bounced back from nadirs in March and April. While this signals confidence, a proposed class-action lawsuit was filed against Musk and Tesla on Aug. 4 by shareholders who alleged securities fraud, Reuters reported. It's the latest in a line of legal and investigatory obstacles that could make it difficult for the company to fully recover. Do you think a majority of Americans will have EVs in 20 years?
