New Delhi: NDA's candidate CP Radhakrishnan on Wednesday filed his nomination papers for the Vice Presidential elections in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Earlier today, he paid floral tribute to the statue of Mahatma Gandhi in the Parliament premises.
He also paid tribute to the statues of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj, Mahatma Jyotirao Phule, Rani Lakshmibai, BR Ambedkar and Bhagwan Birsa Munda at the Parliament.
CP Radhakrishnan was accompanied by Union Ministers Pralhad Joshi, Kiren Rijiju, Arjun Ram Meghwal, Dharmendra Pradhan, Ram Mohan Naidu Kinjarapu, L Murugan and BJP leader Vinod Tawade.
Radhakrishnan has previously served as a Member of Parliament and as Governor of Jharkhand and Telangana. Prime Minister Modi praised his 'dedication, humility, and intellect', noting his long-standing grassroots work in Tamil Nadu.
Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan, who has been the Maharashtra Governor since July 31, 2024, had earlier also served as the Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana and Lieutenant Governor of Puducherry.
Radhakrishnan, who served as the two-time MP from Coimbatore, was born on October 20, 1957, in Tamil Nadu's Tirrupur.
The BJP stalwart from Tamil Nadu has achieved a bachelor's degree in Business Administration and became the state committee member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJP's precursor, in 1974. Before the Jan Sangh, he joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
In the year 1996, Radhakrishnan was appointed as the BJP Tamil Nadu secretary, following which he was elected as a Lok Sabha member from Coimbatore in 1998 and reelected again in 1999.
During his tenure as MP, he served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee and was also a member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) and the Consultative Committee for Finance. Radhakrishnan was also a member of the Parliamentary Special Committee investigating the Stock Exchange Scam. (ANI)

Mr. Gandhi was speaking at the felicitation programme for the Opposition's joint candidate for the Vice-Presidential polls, Justice (retired) B. Sudershan Reddy. 'We are going back to the medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at his will,' Mr. Gandhi said. 'It is a step to empower the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in a sinister manner at the expense of the basic principles of our Constitution,' the Trinamool Congress chairperson said. Condemning the Bills, he said, 'The plan of these Bills is clear. This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by the mere registration of a case.' CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby said the Bills exposed the government's 'neo-fascist characteristics' and was a 'direct assault on our democracy'. Communist Party of India Rajya Sabha member P. Sandosh Kumar said the three Bills would open 'floodgates of vendetta politics'. CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the Bills would sound the 'death knell' for federalism. 'Every State government opposed to the BJP's politics and policies will henceforth be rendered permanently destabilised and dysfunctional. Every NDA ally will be on tenterhooks to fall in line with the BJP,' he said in a statement.

U.P.'s Jalalabad to get a new name, it's Parashurampuri
Lucknow The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district to Parashurampuri. 'I am to invite attention to Government of Uttar Pradesh letter No. 591/N-2/2025 E-1922059, dated 27.06.2025 on the subject mentioned above (renaming of town Jalalabad as Parashurampuri in Shahjahanpur district) and to say that Government of India has No Objection to the change of the name of town Jalalabad as Parashurampuri, District Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh,' reads the letter by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) addressed to the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. The Centre asked the State government to notify the new name, Parashurampuri, by registering it in Devnagri (Hindi) and Roman (English) scripts, and in all regional languages. The Uttar Pradesh government, in a letter to the MHA, had said that Jalalabad is known as the birthplace of Parashuram, the saint, and houses an ancient temple dedicated to him. The Jalalabad municipal board had passed a resolution to rename it after Parashuram. After the Union government's approval, Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP from Pilibhit Jitin Prasada, who hails from Shahjahanpur, expressed his gratitude. 'Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Honorable Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji for giving permission to change the name of Jalalabad ... to 'Parshurampuri'.
