What happened in Parliament would bring shame to any civilised society: BJP on Trinamool MPs tearing, throwing Bills at HM

New Delhi: A major uproar broke out in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday after Opposition MPs, including members of the Trinamool Congress, tore and hurled copies of three key bills towards Union Home Minister Amit Shah while he was introducing them. The BJP has strongly condemned the incident, calling it a 'shameful act that would bring disgrace to any civilised society.' BJP MP and actor-turned-politician Kangana Ranaut said the Opposition's conduct had crossed all limits of parliamentary propriety. 'What we witnessed in Parliament today is something that would bring shame to any civilised society. When our Home Minister Amit Shah was proposing a bill, Opposition leaders tried to snatch away his microphone. Worse still, they tore the bill and threw it at his face. Some even came with stones and hurled them. But our party showed patience,' she added. BJP MP Aparajita Sarangi termed the behaviour 'truly unfortunate.' 'Opposition members created a ruckus from their seats and then crossed every line of decorum. Several women MPs and TMC members attempted to attack the Home Minister. They tore copies of the bill and hurled them in his direction. This was not dissent—it was an attack,' she said. BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj also described the scenes as 'nothing less than the murder of democracy.' 'Trinamool Congress MPs, particularly one of their women MPs, tried to snatch the microphone, tore pages, and threw them in the House. This act has embarrassed the voters, the public, and the very spirit of democracy. The BJP strongly condemns such behaviour," she told IANS. BJP leader Annpurna Devi also denounced the incident. 'The entire country is watching. The conduct displayed today, especially by Trinamool Congress members, was extremely inappropriate. Even senior and respected MPs behaved in this unruly manner when the Home Minister was presenting the Bill. The Opposition claims ruling party MPs also attacked them, but that is false. We were only standing, not attacking. What they did was against every norm of parliamentary decorum,' she said. The chaos unfolded as Union Home Minister Amit Shah tabled the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirtieth Amendment) Bill, 2025, the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill, 2025, and amendments to the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act, 2019. The first bill seeks automatic removal of Prime Ministers, Chief Ministers, and Union Ministers facing corruption or serious criminal charges if held for 30 consecutive days. Opposition MPs strongly opposed the move, tearing copies of the bills and shouting slogans. Amid the ruckus, Amit Shah proposed that the bills be referred to a Joint Committee of Parliament for further examination.

'We are going back to the medieval times,' says Rahul Gandhi on new Bills

Referring the constitutional Bills aimed at removing persons from office if they are jailed for any offence for more than 30 days, Congress leader and Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) said these legislation take one back to 'the medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at his will.' Mr. Gandhi was speaking at the felicitation programme for the Opposition's joint candidate for the Vice-Presidential polls, Justice (retired) B. Sudershan Reddy. 'We are going back to the medieval times when the king could just remove anybody at his will,' Mr. Gandhi said. There was no concept of what an elected person was, he said, adding, 'If he doesn't like your face, he tells ED [Enforcement Directorate] to put a case, and then a democratically elected person is wiped out within 30 days… this is new.' Also read | TDP and JD(U) support the Bills but express reservation about several 'grey areas' in the legislations The Opposition parliamentary leaders met on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) to discuss their strategy to oppose the Bills. As per sources, it was suggested by a few leaders at the meeting that the Opposition should not nominate any of its members to the Parliament's Joint Committee which would be constituted to review the legislation. 'Any kind of participation will be equal to legitimising these Bills,' a senior leader opined. However, the Opposition has not taken a final call on this. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin too flayed the Bills. Ms. Banerjee, in a long post on X, said these legislation aimed to 'finish the independence of our judiciary.' The Bills are 'nothing short of a Hitlerian assault on the very soul of Indian democracy,' she said. Ms. Banerjee claimed that the Bills were to 'empower' the Union government 'to intrude upon the mandate of the people, handing sweeping powers to unelected authorities like the ED and the CBI to interfere in the functioning of elected State governments'. 'It is a step to empower the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister in a sinister manner at the expense of the basic principles of our Constitution,' the Trinamool Congress chairperson said. False cases DMK chief Mr. Stalin said this was how 'dictatorships' begin. 'Steal votes, Silence rivals and Crush States,' he wrote on X. Condemning the Bills, he said, 'The plan of these Bills is clear. It allows the BJP to foist false cases against political opponents in power across States and remove them by misusing provisions that treat even a 30-day arrest as a ground for removal of an elected leader, without any conviction or trial. This unconstitutional amendment will certainly be struck down by the courts because guilt is decided only after trial, not by the mere registration of a case.' CPI(M) General Secretary M.A. Baby said the Bills exposed the government's 'neo-fascist characteristics' and was a 'direct assault on our democracy'. Communist Party of India Rajya Sabha member P. Sandosh Kumar said the three Bills would open 'floodgates of vendetta politics'. CPI(ML) Liberation general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya said the Bills would sound the 'death knell' for federalism. 'Every State government opposed to the BJP's politics and policies will henceforth be rendered permanently destabilised and dysfunctional. Every NDA ally will be on tenterhooks to fall in line with the BJP,' he said in a statement.

U.P.'s Jalalabad to get a new name, it's Parashurampuri

Lucknow The Union Home Ministry on Wednesday (August 20, 2025) approved the renaming of Jalalabad town in Uttar Pradesh's Shahjahanpur district to Parashurampuri. 'I am to invite attention to Government of Uttar Pradesh letter No. 591/N-2/2025 E-1922059, dated 27.06.2025 on the subject mentioned above (renaming of town Jalalabad as Parashurampuri in Shahjahanpur district) and to say that Government of India has No Objection to the change of the name of town Jalalabad as Parashurampuri, District Shahjahanpur, Uttar Pradesh,' reads the letter by the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) addressed to the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh. The Centre asked the State government to notify the new name, Parashurampuri, by registering it in Devnagri (Hindi) and Roman (English) scripts, and in all regional languages. The Uttar Pradesh government, in a letter to the MHA, had said that Jalalabad is known as the birthplace of Parashuram, the saint, and houses an ancient temple dedicated to him. The Jalalabad municipal board had passed a resolution to rename it after Parashuram. After the Union government's approval, Union Minister and Lok Sabha MP from Pilibhit Jitin Prasada, who hails from Shahjahanpur, expressed his gratitude. 'Heartfelt thanks and gratitude to the Honorable Home Minister Shri Amit Shah ji for giving permission to change the name of Jalalabad ... to 'Parshurampuri'. Heartfelt gratitude, salutations and congratulations to the respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and Hon. Chief Minister Shri Yogi Adityanath Ji. This decision taken under your guidance and leadership has given a proud moment to the entire Sanatani society,' he wrote on X.
