AMD launches EPYC 4005 Series for entry-level server market

AMD has introduced its EPYC 4005 Series processors, targeting the entry-level server market with new offerings based on its 'Zen 5' architecture.
The EPYC 4005 Series is designed for small businesses and hosted IT service providers, aiming to deliver enterprise-grade features while focusing on affordability and reduced deployment complexity. AMD has positioned the range as an option for those seeking performance, dependability, and efficiency within budget constraints.
The processors make use of the AM5 socket, which is also employed in the existing EPYC 4004 Series, allowing for deployment in a variety of form factors including servers, blades, and towers. The company has highlighted that the new solutions strip away what it describes as "unnecessary features and complexity," in a bid to control costs for enterprise customers at the entry level.
In testing performed using the Phoronix suite, AMD reports that the EPYC 4565P 16-core processor outperformed the top-of-stack 6th generation Intel Xeon 6300P by approximately 1.83 times according to AMD's own benchmarking data.

The EPYC 4005 Series launches with broad partner support, with server, cloud, and hardware vendors such as Altos, ASRock Rack, Gigabyte, Lenovo, MiTAC, MSI, New Egg, OVHcloud, Supermicro, and Vultr participating in the rollout.

TruScale DaaS for Sustainability integrates Lenovo's data-driven infrastructure with a comprehensive set of sustainability-focused services, aiming to extend device life, reduce costs, and offset lifecycle emissions without introducing unnecessary complexity for enterprise IT leaders. Integrated sustainability tools Among its key features, the platform includes Lenovo's Carbon Impact Portal, providing real-time emissions, energy, and packaging data at the device level to support Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) reporting. In addition, enterprises can access certified refurbished devices, CO2 offset services, and asset recovery solutions to maximise circularity and value at every stage of the device lifecycle. According to Lenovo, the modular nature of the service means that organisations can adopt the parts that best fit their requirements – from sourcing fewer devices to extending device life and implementing verified emissions offsets. The company states that over 1 million devices have already been responsibly retired through its asset recovery experience spanning more than 15 years. Cost and carbon efficiencies Analysis of previous deployments indicates that organisations using TruScale DaaS for Sustainability have achieved reductions of up to 35% in device-related IT costs. The service removes the need for upfront capital expenditure and simplifies procurement cycles, an aspect underlined by research from Capgemini which found that 62% of organisations invest in sustainability measures for the associated cost benefits. John Stamer, Vice President and General Manager, Global Product Services at Lenovo, commented on the development: "Enterprises are rethinking how they manage IT – not just for performance, but for purpose. TruScale DaaS for Sustainability reflects our vision for the future of IT: circular by default, intelligent by design, and accountable by outcome. It's a smarter, more resilient way to deliver value across the enterprise." Lenovo has stated that its commercial laptops and desktops are 100% ENERGY STAR certified, with monitors at 98% compliance, aiming to reinforce efficiency at the device level. The company reports that DaaS adopters have noted a 20% reduction in total cost of ownership, with maintenance savings ranging from 10% to 40%. Coventry University Group results Coventry University Group has adopted TruScale DaaS for Sustainability to refresh its IT estate, resulting in the offset of 223 tons of CO2 through Lenovo's CO2 Offset Services. The university further reports operational gains, including saving 40 hours per week in IT labour and improvements in global device delivery and support across its faculty networks. Ian Dunn, Provost at Coventry University Group, described the impact as follows: "Lenovo TruScale gives us the scalability and flexibility we need to manage our technology estate efficiently and meet our carbon reduction goals. It's taken pressure off our internal teams, allowing us to focus more on delivering outstanding student experiences." Device lifecycle and AI guidance TruScale DaaS for Sustainability is structured to address all stages of the device lifecycle, from advising on strategy and implementation through to support, management, retirement and device refresh. Lenovo highlights the use of artificial intelligence-driven tools, such as its Intelligent Sustainability Solutions Advisor (LISSA) and Care of OneTM, to support sustainable refresh practices and enhance the end-user experience. Lenovo has maintained its top position in the Gartner Asia/Pacific Supply Chain Top 10 for 2025, the fourth consecutive year it has led the ranking among companies in the APAC region. The list compiled by Gartner recognises supply chain performance across several criteria, highlighting adaptability to growth, use of technology for efficiency and resilience, and sustainability efforts including circular innovation. Lenovo's placement reflects the company's ongoing transformation of its global supply chain and manufacturing network. The 2025 report also placed Lenovo at number eight in Gartner's Global Supply Chain Top 25, an improvement of two spots compared to the previous year. The recognition has been attributed to Lenovo's focus on AI, operational standards, and environmental, social and governance goals. According to Lenovo, these areas have strengthened its presence as a major organisation in global supply chain innovation and adaptability. Global supply chain Lenovo's supply chain operates in 180 markets and includes over 30 manufacturing sites across 11 different countries. This global reach has been described as being a crucial asset for managing both geopolitical and economic challenges in recent years. To support customers in the Middle East and Africa, Lenovo is planning to expand its manufacturing base into Saudi Arabia. The company said that this development will extend its regional footprint, capitalise on market opportunities in MEA, and allow faster delivery of products and services for customers in those markets. AMD has announced a free software update enabling 128 billion parameter Large Language Models (LLMs) to be run locally on Windows PCs powered by AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB processors, a capability previously only accessible through cloud infrastructure. With this update, AMD is allowing users to access and deploy advanced AI models locally, bypassing the need for third-party infrastructure, which can provide greater control, lower ongoing costs, and improved privacy. The company says this shift addresses growing demand for scalable and private AI processing at the client device level. Previously, models of this scale, such as those approaching the size of ChatGPT 3.0, were operable only within large-scale data centres. The new functionality comes through an upgrade to AMD Variable Graphics Memory, included with the upcoming Adrenalin Edition 25.8.1 WHQL drivers. This upgrade leverages the 96GB Variable Graphics Memory available on the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB machine, supporting the execution of memory-intensive LLM workloads directly on Windows PCs. A broader deployment This update also marks the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (128GB) as the first Windows AI PC processor to run Meta's Llama 4 Scout 109B model - specifically with full vision and multi-call processing (MCP) support. The processor can manage all 109 billion parameters in memory, although the mixture-of-experts (MoE) architecture means only 17 billion parameters are active at any given time. The company reports output rates of up to 15 tokens per second for this model. According to AMD, the ability to handle such large models locally is important for users who require high-capacity AI assistants on-the-go. The system also supports flexible quantisation and can facilitate a range of LLMs, from compact 1B parameter models to Mistral Large, using the GGUF format. This isn't just about bringing cloud-scale compute to the desktop; it's about expanding the range of options for how AI can be used, built, and deployed locally. The company further states that performance in MoE models like Llama 4 Scout correlates with the number of active parameters, while dense models depend on the total parameter count. The memory capacity of the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ platform allows users to opt for higher-precision models, supporting up to 16-bit models through when trade-offs between quality and performance are warranted. Context and workflow AMD also highlights the importance of context size when working with LLMs. The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (128GB), equipped with the new driver, can run Meta's Llama 4 Scout at a context length of 256,000 (with Flash Attention ON and KV Cache Q8), significantly exceeding the standard 4,096 token window default in many applications. Examples provided include demonstrations where an LLM summarises extensive documents, such as an SEC EDGAR filing, requiring over 19,000 tokens to be held in context. Another example cited the summarisation of a research paper from the ARXIV database, needing more than 21,000 tokens from query initiation to final output. AMD notes that more complex workflows might require even greater context capacity, particularly for multi-tool and agentic scenarios. AMD states that while occasional users may manage with a context length of 32,000 tokens and a lightweight model, more demanding use cases will benefit from hardware and software that support expansive contexts, as offered by the AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 128GB. Looking ahead, AMD points to an expanding set of agentic workflows as LLMs and AI agents become more widely adopted for local inferencing. Industry trends indicate that model developers, including Meta, Google, and Mistral, are increasingly integrating tool-calling capabilities into their training runs to facilitate local personal assistant use cases. AMD also provides guidance on maintaining caution when enabling tool access for large language models, noting the potential for unpredictable system behaviour and outcomes. Users are advised to install LLM implementations only from trusted sources. The AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (128GB) is now positioned to support most models available through and other tools, offering flexible deployment and model selection options for users with high-performance local AI requirements.
