‘Not Only They Murder Democracy But…': PM Modi's Dig At Congress On Imposing Emergency
PM Modi said that recently India marked 50 years of dark period and said that democracy was murdered and the people of India were harassed.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday took a veiled jibe at Congress party saying that people who imposed emergency in the nation did not just murder the democracy but their goal was also to keep judiciary as their puppet.
While addressing the 123rd episode of his monthly radio program, Mann Ki Baat, PM Modi said that recently India marked 50 years of dark period and said that democracy was murdered and the people of India were harassed. He further said that the Emergency was a tough period for the nation.
During the broadcast, the Prime Minister also aired the brief message of former PM Morarji Desai detailing how people were tortured during that period.
'Morarji Desai describes the Emergency in brief… Not only did those who imposed Emergency murder democracy, but their intention was to keep the judiciary as their puppet… Under 'MISA', anyone was arrested arbitrarily, people were tortured…" he said.

He further said that the country marked 50 years of Emergency being imposed, a few days ago. 'We countrymen observed 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' on the occasion and we must remember those who bravely fought against Emergency. This inspires us to remain vigilant to safeguard our constitution," he added.
Earlier on Wednesday, the Union Cabinet, passed a resolution to commemorate and honour the 'sacrifices of countless individuals who valiantly resisted the Emergency".
The 21-month-long censorship of the press, mass arrest, and centralisation of power in the hands of an unaccountable executive marked the nadir of Indian democracy.
The roots of this unprecedented move lay in a verdict delivered just weeks earlier. On 12 June 1975, the Allahabad High Court found Prime Minister Indira Gandhi guilty of electoral malpractice in her 1971 win over socialist leader Raj Narain from Rae Bareli. The court disqualified her from holding office and barred her from contesting elections for six years.
Soon after the court's ruling, the opposition launched a nationwide campaign demanding her resignation.
Indira Gandhi's inner circle argued that the country was descending into anarchy – trains had stopped running, courts were being surrounded, and public services had come to a standstill due to strikes.
As the pressure mounted, Gandhi's legal team crafted a justification for invoking Article 352.
With one stroke of the pen, democracy was suspended. Civil liberties vanished overnight. The press was muzzled, opposition leaders jailed, judicial oversight curtailed, and censorship became law.
For the next 21 months, India was ruled under extraordinary powers. Thousands of political opponents were imprisoned without trial. A period of forced sterilisations and slum demolitions followed, with the government wielding unchecked authority.

PM Modi reviews Delhi sections of UER-2, Dwarka Expressway before inauguration
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday reviewed the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) and interacted with the construction workers of both the highways, before inaugurating the projects which are worth a combined cost of nearly ₹11,000 crore. According to the Prime Minister's office, the projects have been developed under a comprehensive decongestion plan for Delhi.(ANI File Photo) The Prime Minister along with union minister of road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari, chief minister of Delhi, Rekha Gupta and chief minister of Haryana, Nayab Singh Saini reviewed the two projects. The first stretch is Alipur to Dichaon Kalan part of Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) along with new links to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, which is built at a cost of around ₹5,580 Crores. He also inaugurated the 10.1 km long Delhi section of Dwarka Expressway, that has been developed at a cost of around ₹5,360 crore. Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II): Alipur to Dichaon Kalan stretch The Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) is aimed to ease traffic on Delhi's Inner and Outer Ring Roads and busy points like Mukarba Chowk, Dhaula Kuan, and NH-09. The 76-km Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II), designed as Delhi's third Ring Road, will give direct access to Bahadurgarh and Sonipat, improve industrial connectivity, cut city traffic, and speed up goods movement in the National Capital Region, reported PTI. According to the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), Modi will flag off four of the five packages of UER-II, connecting Mahipalpur near IGI Airport to Alipur in North Delhi. UER-II will link to the Delhi-Dehradun Expressway, starting near Akshardham temple, enabling faster routes from Haryana and Rajasthan towards Dehradun. A new 65 km highway from Tronica City to the under-construction FNG Expressway has also been approved. In future, the corridor will connect five major NCR expressways: Delhi-Dehradun, Delhi-Meerut, Noida-Greater Noida, DND-Faridabad, and Yamuna Expressways. The Delhi section of the expressway will comprise a four level interchange, with two of them constructed under the ground. Marked with an eight-lane shallow and four-lane airport tunnel, it will also usher in Multi-modal connectivity to Yashobhoomi, DMRC Blue line and Orange line, the upcoming Bijwasan railway station and the Dwarka cluster Bus Depot, ensuring a seamless commute across the national capital region. It would also cut short the travel time from Sonipat, Rohtak, Bahadurgarh and Gurugram to the Delhi airport, significantly. A 34-lane wide toll plaza will also be constructed as a part of this expressway, said a PTI report. A stretch of 5.9 km of this section from Shiv Murti intersection to the Road Under Bridge (RUB) at Dwarka Sector-21 and another stretch of 4.2 km from Dwarka Sector-21 RUB to the Delhi-Haryana Border, will be providing direct connectivity to Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II). It would also be linking the proposed 'twin tube tunnel' on NH 148AE, connecting Shiv Murti intersection to Nelson Mandela Marg. Seamless mobility across NCR According to the Prime Minister's office, the projects — the Delhi section of the Dwarka Expressway and the Urban Extension Road-II (UER-II) — have been developed under a comprehensive decongestion plan for Delhi. With the objective of smoothening connectivity, cutting short travel time, and easing traffic disruptions, these initiatives reflect Prime Minister Modi's vision of creating world-class infrastructure that enhances ease of living and ensures seamless mobility, read a statement by the PMO on Saturday.

BJP leader CR Kesavan on Sunday slammed Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's 'Voter Adhikaar Yatra' in Bihar, terming it a "Samvidhan Badnam Yatra" (Constitution slander yatra). Kesavan accused Gandhi of attempting to "sabotage" the Constitution through "undemocratic and underhanded scarecrow tactics of fear-mongering." Kesavan also alleged that while Congress and its ally RJD speak of protecting "one person, one vote", their true agenda is centred on promoting "one family and one dynastic rule". "Rahul Gandhi's yatra is nothing but 'Samvidhan Badnam Yatra' (Constitution slander yatra). Rahul Gandhi's deliberate and repeated attempts to sabotage Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar ji's constitution with his undemocratic and underhanded scarecrow tactics of fear-mongering will miserably fail. As far as Rahul Gandhi and Congress, and their cohorts are concerned, they talk about protecting one person, one vote, but in reality, for the Congress and RJD, it is all about one family and one dynastic rule,' he said. He further labelled Gandhi a "chronic, cynical abuser" for allegedly maligning the Constitution, claiming the yatra was driven by the "fear of failure" of Congress and RJD in the state. "Rahul Gandhi has been a chronic, cynical abuser when it comes to maligning our constitution... The real reason for this yatra is the fear of failure of Congress and the RJD," he added. Today, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will kick off the 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' from Sasaram in Bihar, aiming to raise awareness about voter rights and protest against alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The 16-day yatra will cover a distance of 1,300 kilometres, with scheduled breaks of one day each on three occasions (August 20, 25 and 31). Rahul Gandhi will be accompanied by Mahagathbandhan leaders, including Tejashwi Yadav and representatives from Left parties. The journey will be conducted in a hybrid mode, following the footsteps of Rahul Gandhi's earlier Bharat Jodo Yatras, with the first being on foot and the second in a hybrid format. The yatra will culminate on September 1 at the historic Gandhi Maidan in Patna with a large rally attended by key INDIA alliance leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, Tejashwi Yadav, and Lalu Prasad Yadav, marking the formal launch of the Bihar assembly election campaign.

Movies to politics, BJP to Congress: Former President Giani Zail Singh's grandson Inderjeet gets a second chance
The political journey of former President Giani Zail Singh's grandson Inderjeet Singh has come full circle. Four years after joining the BJP with much fanfare, he has returned to the Congress fold, calling it a 'homecoming' and blaming the BJP for not addressing people's concerns. The 63-year-old Inderjeet was born in Sandhwan village in Punjab's Faridkot district that is also the birthplace of his grandfather, the first Sikh to become President. Politically active since 1992, Inderjeet's career, however, has been uneven, shaped by both family legacy and personal choices. Before politics, he tried his hand in cinema after wrestler-turned-actor Dara Singh spotted him at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the early 1980s. 'Dara Singh ji had come to meet Giani ji and he (his grandfather) was busy in a meeting, so I received him. I too was fond of wrestling and had worked a lot on my physique. So, I interacted with Dara Singh while he was waiting to meet the President. He suggested I try films. I moved to Mumbai and remained there for a couple of years,' Inderjeet told The Indian Express. He acted in three films — Hindi movies Belagaam and Kasam Vardi Ki and Punjabi film Vairi — but success eluded him. Politics beckoned in 1992 after Zail Singh's nephew and former MLA Basant Singh lost from Anandpur Sahib on a Congress ticket to a BJP candidate despite an Akali boycott. 'Giani ji called me back from Mumbai to be active in politics. He started making me meet politicians,' Inderjeet said. In a blow for the family, the former President was involved in a road accident in Kiratpur Sahib in Punjab's Ropar district in November 1994 and died the following month at PGIMER Hospital in Chandigarh. By then, Inderjeet had developed close ties with Janata Dal leader, and subsequently Lok Janshakti Party founder, Ram Vilas Paswan. 'Without formally joining his party, I remained associated with him. I worked as an advisor in the railway committee when he was the Railways Minister, in the telecommunication committee and other portfolios. I stayed connected with him in all the alliances he was part of,' he said. The association between the two continued till Paswan's death in 2020. Inderjeet's formal entry into politics took place in September 2021, at the peak of the farmers' protests against three central agrarian laws, when he joined politics in the presence of Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. 'I was an actor earlier, but my grandfather introduced me to leaders such as Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani and insisted that I enter politics,' he said at the time, calling his move the fulfilment of Zail Singh's wish. He also accused the Congress of not treating his grandfather with respect. 'The Congress did not behave properly with my grandfather. His wish has been fulfilled today. He wanted me to be in the BJP.' That day, he even dropped a bombshell by questioning the circumstances of his grandfather's death, saying the 1994 accident remained a mystery. 'I cannot say whether it was truly an accident or something orchestrated,' he said. Asked about it following his return to the Congress on August 14, Inderjeet clarified, 'I had not pointed towards any political party but raised questions about the inquiry into the accident and why Gianiji was not shifted to a Delhi hospital in time.' The BJP never gave him a significant role in Punjab despite his lineage and his position as a prominent face from the Ramgarhia Sikh community, which is categorised as an Other Backward Class (OBC). 'After joining the BJP, I wasn't given any portfolio in the party. I felt they just used me as a Sikh face joining the party during the farmers' agitation. Later, talks were on to give me a chance to contest the 2022 Vidhan Sabha polls and 2024 Lok Sabha polls from Ludhiana, but I wasn't given any chance,' Inderjeet said. While his political career did not quite take off, Inderjeet, who has been living in Khanna in Ludhiana district for the past 15 years, has been active in social organisations such as the Vishvkarma Samaj and Rashtriya OBC Mahasangh. Following his return to the Congress, which he termed his 'ghar wapsi (homecoming)', Inderjeet accused the BJP of using the backward classes for optics and doing 'anything substantive for their welfare'. 'The country is facing many serious challenges, including inflation and poor economic conditions. Under the leadership of Rahul Gandhi, the Congress is fighting for social justice, and I want to be part of this struggle,' he said at his reinduction in New Delhi, adding that the Leader of the Opposition's 'commitment to OBCs' had impressed him. As he tries to get his political career going again, for Inderjeet Singh, this is a second chance to reclaim space in the Congress, the party where his family's legacy was built.
