Citi launches Strata Elite Card to compete with AmEx, Chase

New York, Jul 27 (AP) There's a new but familiar face coming to the world of high-end credit cards.
Citigroup is launching the Strata Elite Card, the bank's latest attempt to grab a piece of the high-fee, high-rewards credit card market that's dominated by American Express' Platinum Card and JPMorgan Chase's Sapphire Reserve Card.
The card, which is priced less than the Platinum Card and the Sapphire Reserve Card at an annual fee of USD 595, will offer points multiples for certain types of spending, like hotels, car rents, air travel and restaurants. Additionally, the card will offer points for everyday spending, as well as a USD 300 hotel credit and a USD 200 'splurge" credit at brands like Best Buy, Live Nation and others.
Citi has had other forays into the high-end credit card market. The company launched Citi Prestige in 2013 as a direct competitor to the American Express Platinum Card, and the card won high praise from travel fanatics when it debuted for its hefty rewards program and perks.
But Prestige lost its prestige when Chase launched the Sapphire Reserve Card, a credit card that was an instant hit when it was released in 2016, and when AmEx overhauled the Platinum Card to be more competitive. Citi stopped allowing new applications for Prestige in 2021, but the card's benefits still exist for customers carrying the card.
Strata Elite is facing a highly competitive marketplace. Along with the Platinum Card and Sapphire Reserve, there are other rewards-heavy cards like Capital One's Venture X Card and a coming high rewards card from credit card upstart Bilt early next year. Chase raised the annual fee on Sapphire Reserve to USD 795 as part of a product refresh in June, and American Express has indicated it will be revising the Platinum Card's rewards and perks later this year.
A customer who ends up carrying two of these high-fee cards can quickly spend more than USD 1,000 on annual fees. So far, credit card companies have been able to justify these fees by attaching lucrative perks to the cards, like travel or other spending credits, and generous rewards programs, effectively marketing them as a high-end subscription plan. But it's not clear how willing customers are to carry several of these cards each year.
This is the third in the Citi Strata card family, following a similar formula to other banks where there's a 'good, better, best" choice for customers. The other cards are the Citi Strata Card and Strata Premier.
The biggest earning potential on Citi's new card is by booking travel through Citi's new travel portal, which gives 12 times points on Citi's 'Thank You" rewards programme.
Credit card companies are trying to push customers onto their own travel portals, where banks can contract directly with airlines and hotels and make sure customers use their branded credit cards when travelling.
American Express, Chase and Capital One have all built out their travel services in recent years and are increasingly offering customers better rewards and redemptions for using their services instead of booking through a place like Expedia. (AP) GRS GRS

State best place for entrepreneurs to start as well as grow big: CM

Bengaluru: Pitching Bengaluru as the tech capital of India that is making leaps in new-age technology like quantum science and artificial intelligence, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday invited industry leaders for the 28th Bengaluru Tech Summit to be organised here from November 18 to 20. 'We are the best place for entrepreneurs to start and grow big,' he added. Siddaramaiah was addressing nearly 100 industry leaders at a breakfast meeting called by the Department of Electronics, IT & BT, Karnataka government, to promote the summit. 'In Artificial Intelligence, Bengaluru ranks 5th among the world's top AI cities. It hosts nearly 50 per cent of India's AI talent, making it the second-largest AI talent hub globally,' pointed out the CM. He promised that Karnataka's new IT policy will focus on creating infrastructure for AI. According to him, from the Mysuru kings to the first IT policy in 1997 and the Global Capability Centre Policy in 2024, Karnataka has always planned ahead. 'In quantum technology, for instance, Karnataka launched India's first state-level Quantum Technology Roadmap. We aim to make Karnataka Asia's top Quantum Innovation Hub by 2035, with a USD 20 billion quantum economy,' he said. 'We are planning Quantum Hardware Parks, Innovation Zones, and a global Quantum Conclave in Bengaluru,' Siddaramaiah said. He also said Karnataka is India's largest software-exporting state, contributing 44 per cent of the nation's software exports. 'The IT and ITeS sector accounts for 26 per cent of our state's economy. We host over 875 Global Capability Centres (GCC), which is 30 per cent of India's total. Our goal is to add 500 more GCCs by 2029, creating 3,50,000 jobs and USD 50 billion in economic output. We are also building tech clusters beyond Bengaluru to ensure growth across the state,' he added. The CM took pride in the fact that Karnataka is now home to over 18,300 startups and more than 45 unicorns. He also promised industry leaders that Karnataka will take this a notch further. 'We are building QWIN City, an integrated ecosystem for wellness, innovation, and new-age industries. This will be a magnet for global scientists, entrepreneurs, and investors, offering dedicated R&D clusters, and wellness infrastructure that makes it a destination to live, work, and innovate,' he added. He also talked about the upcoming Health City, a world-class healthcare and life sciences hub. 'It will bring together medical research, biotech innovation, med-tech manufacturing, and super-speciality hospitals to serve both India and the world,' he added. Chief Minister also said Karnataka's vision is to make it the place where the world comes to solve its biggest challenges. 'Whether it is curing diseases, developing sustainable energy solutions, or building the computers of the future, we will provide the talent, infrastructure, and policy support to make it happen. I invite industry leaders, innovators, and visionaries to come work with us,' said the CM.

Alternative fuels will propel India to top position in automobile sector: Gadkari

The Union minister said India is currently at the third position in the automobile sector, 'but with the way our research and innovation in alternative fuel is progressing, the day is not far when we will become number one'. 'In the coming days, due to ethanol, methanol, bio-diesel, LNG, CNG, electric, and hydrogen, a new change in the world will be witnessed because of us,' Gadkari said while addressing a function to mark the 10th anniversary of World Biofuel Day in India, organised by Praj Industries. Pune, Aug 11 (PTI) Union Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari on Monday expressed confidence that India will soon achieve the number one position in the global automobile sector, driven by research and innovation in alternative fuels, including ethanol and hydrogen. The minister said achieving the top spot would have far-reaching socio-economic benefits. 'It will positively impact the economy, generate employment, and reduce pollution. At present, 85 per cent of our energy is imported, but I am confident that we will transform from being an importer of energy to an exporter,' he added. Gadkari said that India's current fossil fuel imports are worth Rs 22 lakh crore, which is not only economically challenging but also a major source of pollution. 'To address both these issues, we must focus on alternative fuels and biofuels,' he said. Gadkari said the condition of the agriculture sector is continuously deteriorating. In terms of GDP contribution, the industrial sector accounts for 22–24 per cent, the service sector 52 per cent, while agriculture contributes only 12–14 per cent. Yet, 60–65 per cent of our population depends on agriculture for their livelihood, he added. 'If we want to become Aatmanirbhar and the world's third-largest economy of USD 5 trillion, the share of agriculture in GDP must increase to 22 to 24 per cent. To realise this goal, our government has adopted an important policy of diversifying agriculture towards the energy and power sectors,' the Union minister added. He said a debate over food and fuel began with the start of ethanol production. 'Today, we have a surplus of sugar, rice, wheat, and corn, and are unable to provide remunerative prices for these crops. For instance, the MSP of corn was Rs 1,800 per quintal, but its market price has fallen to Rs 1,200 per quintal. After the ethanol policy, in Bihar and Uttar Pradesh, corn prices have risen to Rs 2,600 to Rs 2,800 per quintal. Corn is now yielding good returns to farmers,' Gadkari said. He recalled the days when sugarcane cultivators had to wait two to three years for their payments. 'After the ethanol policy, they are getting their money on time now. In Western Maharashtra alone, nearly 70 per cent of the sugar industry would have faced closure if ethanol production had not started,' he added.
