Breakthrough in search for kidnapped Kamogelo Baukudi

The South African Police Service (Saps) in the Free State has made a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into the kidnapping of 19-year-old Kamogelo Baukudi.
Police spokesperson Brigadier Motantsi Makhele a 42-year-old police sergeant has been taken in for questioning and detained in Bloemfontein.
Detention
'The man is expected to appear in court soon in connection with the case'.
Provincial Commissioner of Saps in the Free State, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, has reiterated the police's unwavering commitment to uncovering the full truth behind Baukudi's kidnapping.
'This investigation has now entered a crucial phase, said Motswenyane. The involvement of any SAPS member in criminal acts will not be tolerated. Culprits will be held accountable – even if they are within our own ranks'.

Task team
A police task team was established to search for Baukudi, who was kidnapped last week by two suspects impersonating police officers.
Baukudi was kidnapped in Vereeniging on Thursday, just before 12pm.
Police spokesperson Colonel Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said a complainant identified as Daniel Malebatso arrived at Marti Du Plessis School in Fitchardpark as usual to fetch Baukudi, a Grade 11 pupil at the school.
Mathe said the duo left the school premises with Baukudi, driving the Suzuki Ertiga.
'Whilst driving along Vereeniging Drive Erlichpark Extension, Daniel alleges that they heard a siren sound from behind, and they were pulled over by a White Toyota Hilux GD-6 Double Cab.
'Inside the Toyota Hilux, there were two unknown male persons; one wearing police uniform and the other blue tracksuits,' Mathe said.

Blue lights
According to Malebatso, the suspects' bakkie was fitted with blue lights on the grill and what looked like a police radio inside.
Mathe said the suspect, wearing a police uniform, confronted Malebatso and informed him that the Suzuki Ertiga they were driving together with Baukudi was suspected of delivering drugs.
'The suspects then separated Daniel and Kamogelo and instructed Daniel to drive at the front whilst they followed from behind to Park Road Police Station.
'Both vehicles turned back and drove in westerly direction in Vereeniging Drive. Daniel alleges that a truck went in-between the Suzuki he was driving and the Toyota Hilux and he never saw it again,' Mathe said.
Not found
Malebatso told the police that one of the suspects spoke Sesotho fluently and even mentioned the name 'Thipe'.
Mathe said Malebatso and Baukudi's mobile phones were found under the bridge on Ferrera Road.
Baukudi has not been seen since and the police continues to prioritize his safe return as a matter of urgency.

Missing Comrades Marathon runner found near port
MOIRA Harding, the missing Comrades Marathon runner, has been found in a critical condition on Mahatma Gandhi Road in Durban. On Sunday, appeals for help were shared widely on social media after she went missing at the Comrades finish. Harding, representing the Fish Hoek Athletic Club, was recorded as finishing in under 11 hours on the Comrades live tracker app. According to ALS Paramedics spokesperson Garrith Jamieson, a wide-scale search was launched for the missing runner. 'She was found near the port and we are waiting at the hospital,' he said. Harding, who is originally from Durban and now lives in Cape Town, ran the Comrades Marathon with her sister Fiona. 'They ran together for most of the route and around the 70km or 80km mark they split. Fiona finished 20 minutes ahead of her. There were reports of her last seen in the runners' pen but nothing since then,' Baldwin said. A mission person's case had been opened at the Durban Central police station. SASOLBURG – The SAPS is observing Youth Month by celebrating its young men and women in blue who go above and beyond the call of duty. When tragedy strikes along the water's edge, Constable Monica Delport (28) is not the type to stand back. She dives in to help grieving families find answers when their worst fears come true. Based at Zamdela Rural Safety in the Free State, Monica has quietly become one of the most dependable helping hands in some of the province's most heartbreaking moments—search and recovery missions following drowning incidents. In the cold, murky waters of the Vaal Dam and surrounding rivers, her role is clear: bring closure to those left behind. Monica grew up in Sasolburg, surrounded by the strength of service. Her father, a respected police officer, and her aunt, a member of the elite K9 Parliamentary Unit in Cape Town, were constant reminders that a life dedicated to others is a life worth living. That inspiration led her to join the SAPS in 2019. From the moment she stepped into the Graaff-Reinet Training College, she stood out, not just for her determination, but for her discipline. She was awarded Best Overall Student and named the Fittest Female Recruit that year, achievements that would lay the foundation for the challenging path ahead. After serving on the front lines of community complaints at Zamdela CSC, Monica felt the call to do more, to go where few others could or would. In 2021, she paid for her own Open Water Diving course, and the following year, she earned her Advanced Diving certification. It was during an endangered species operation at Vaal Dam in 2022 that she encountered the SAPS Diving Unit and made her interest known. Her commitment didn't go unnoticed. Slowly, she was drawn into official operations, and now, as a learner diver, she plays a critical role in bringing missing persons home. But she didn't stop there. Determined to support every aspect of water-based operations, Monica again paid out of her pocket to earn a skipper's licence, and since March, she has had the authority to operate SAPS vessels on search and rescue missions. 'To give closure to families is the most rewarding part of this work,' says Delport. 'When you're down there and you find what you're looking for, it's emotional, but it's also a kind of peace. You know you've done something that truly matters.' Monica now has her sights set on deeper depths and the SAPS K9 Search and Rescue Unit, where she hopes to combine her diving skills with the power of K9 tracking to save even more lives or help find the lost. For now, it is her own K9 companion, Kenai, a cross-breed rescue dog, that is by her side, which keeps her company. Her journey is a testament to dedication, faith, and fearless service. Missing Comrades runner has been found
There was a major scare at the Comrades marathon on Sunday when race organisers declared runner Moira Harding to be missing. 'She is confirmed to have finished Comrades at 16:52, but has not been seen since,' the initial post read. 'Any information would be greatly appreciated.' On Monday morning it was then confirmed that Harding had been found and is alive, but there is still concern for her wellbeing. Garrith Jamieson, the director of ALS Paramedics, told The Witness publication that she was found in a critical condition and was being airlifted to hospital. 'A wide-scale search was launched and paramedics with SAPS and Metro Police Search and Rescue and Netcare 911 managed to locate the runner who was in a critical state of health on Point Road. 'Advanced Life Support Paramedics are currently treating the patient on scene before being transported to a nearby hospital for the urgent care she requires,' he said.
