New addition Willi Castro immediately shows his value as Cubs drop a tough one
'We had a matchup that we wanted,' manager Craig Counsell said. 'Gunnar Henderson's a really good hitter. Caleb got ahead of (Jordan) Westburg and Henderson and just couldn't put them away. A good hitter took a big swing.'

Criticizing Thielbar for one poor outing is hard to do. He missed on a sweeper to an All-Star player and paid the price. To start the inning, Counsell went with Ryan Brasier to take on the bottom of the Orioles order. A pitcher who had walked three of the 78 batters he'd faced this season opened the eighth with four straight balls.

It was a rough loss. One that the Cubs will have to put behind them quickly. Nico Hoerner admitted this one was tougher than most, especially after Matthew Boyd threw seven brilliant shutout frames to set them up for what seemed like a sure victory.
'You can stick to the process as much as you want,' Hoerner said. 'But every day is incredibly important at this level, wherever we're at in the season. There's no beating around that. We're going to obviously bring it tomorrow and do everything we can to win a series. But every win you leave on the table stings for sure.'
But these types of days aren't likely to be regular occurrences. The Cubs added pitching depth at the deadline to make sure their best relievers don't wear down. Lefty Taylor Rogers is going to be needed so Thielbar and Drew Pomeranz stay effective. Brasier has to perform so Brad Keller doesn't get overused. Andrew Kittredge being added to the mix is an upgrade, and on Friday, the righty showed that he can handle big moments.
The pitching will be key for this team. But the acquisition of Willi Castro should not be overlooked. The versatile defender started at second base on the day, shifting Hoerner to shortstop and giving Dansby Swanson a much-needed day off.
Along with making multiple nice defensive plays, Castro had two hits, including a triple, and scored two runs.
'Willi had a real nice debut,' Counsell said. 'Contributing to a couple of the runs scored for sure.'
The Cubs started the day 3-for-4 with runners in scoring position, then ended it 0-for-5. The inability to cushion their lead ended up costing them on this day. But if Castro can impact the team in various ways, perhaps he can help limit these types of down moments over the final two months.
Second base is just one of six positions Castro can play, giving Craig Counsell and the Cubs a unique weapon to deploy over the final two months of the season. He's a switch-hitter who can produce against both lefties and righties. Counsell called his skill set a 'rare trait' and exactly what this team was looking for at the deadline.

'What he offers as a player, his versatility has been well-covered, but it's real,' Hoerner said. 'It's incredibly helpful for the group down the stretch as guys inevitably deal with little things. He's a quality starting player at a bunch of different places. The energy he brings too, he's a really positive and upbeat guy.'
Wearing carefully curated eye black and a Cubs-branded headband, Castro stood at his locker after the loss. He mentioned how perfect the weather in Chicago was on the day – a sunny 74 degrees, illustrating the best the city has to offer on a summer day. A full ballpark and energized crowd at Wrigley Field was something he had rarely experienced in his career.
He'd preferred to be speaking after a victory, of course, but it was easy to see why Hoerner believed he could bring the right vibe to the clubhouse. His unselfishness and willingness to play wherever he is asked evoke memories of Ben Zobrist, a winning player who would do whatever it took to help his team.
'That's something I really enjoy, playing other positions,' Castro said. 'As a player, I know it helps me a lot because it opens more doors for me. I like to play everywhere. I really enjoy every time I'm out there. Especially here, I feel great, I feel like home. We're gonna keep it going.'
Swanson entered the day as the team leader in games played, having appeared in 108 of the Cubs 109 games. After Saturday's contest, Kyle Tucker and Pete Crow-Armstrong are now equal with Swanson. While Tucker has had days off from defense with time at DH, Castro can fill in for both guys, along with Hoerner, Ian Happ in left and Matt Shaw at third.
'We have a pretty regular group and Willi, as we go through August here, he can fill in at a lot of positions,' Counsell said. 'Those are hard players to find, there's not many players like that out there.'

For much of the season, the Cubs non-catcher bench pieces comprised of Vidal Bruján, Jon Berti and Justin Turner. While Turner has struggled when facing righties, he's done what's needed against left-handed pitchers, posting a 110 wRC+. Bruján had the versatility the Cubs desired, but was DFA'd earlier in the week after delivering a 43 wRC+. He's on the way to his fifth-straight season of negative WAR. Berti is in the midst of his worst season with a 44 wRC+.
With that in mind, Counsell struggled to give his regulars rest. Now he can do so and not expect to get little in return on offense. When asked if he could optimize his lineups better depending on the matchups, Counsell quibbled with the wording.
'I don't know if I'd call it optimizing,' he said, 'as much as there's no drop-off.'
That's imperative for the team. Guys are going to need to rest down the stretch and Counsell can't worry that the players he's giving time to won't produce. This is a deeper and more talented team. Even after a difficult loss on Saturday, the Cubs believe they're better positioned today than they were just a few days ago to chase down a red-hot Milwaukee Brewers team.

Seneca Nation purchases Rochester Knighthawks lacrosse franchise
ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) — The Seneca Nation has purchased the National Lacrosse League's Rochester Knighthawks, replacing Buffalo Bills and Sabres owners Terry and Kim Pegula. The Seneca Nation, a sovereign Native American nation, has roots in western New York, where Rochester is located. The Knighthawks made the announcement on Tuesday. 'Our ancestors were the first people to share the game of lacrosse with the world," Seneca Nation President J. Conrad Seneca said. "It was gifted to them by the Creator as a spiritual game and a game of healing. The Seneca Nation is thrilled to celebrate our connection to the Creator's Game and to this community by keeping the Knighthawks in Rochester, where we look forward to building a bright future rooted in the team's winning tradition.' Terry Pegula helped the team find new ownership. The Pegulas chose to sell the Knighthawks in June to focus on the other NLL team the family owns, the three-time defending champion Buffalo Bandits. The Knighthawks are coming off a third straight trip to the National Lacrosse League Playoffs after winning a franchise record-tying 10 games. Forward Connor Fields became first player in team history to win the NLL's Most Valuable Player Award. Knighthawks general manager Dan Carey will continue to lead the organization and will add president to his title. ___ AP sports:

NFL training camp 2025 news, live updates: Justin Fields, Jets offense struggling to get up to speed so far
[Top training camp stories | NFL team feeds | NFL training camp live blog] All 32 NFL teams have reported to training camp, and there's no shortage of intrigue and storylines so far. The New York Jets are hoping to be one of the NFL's most interesting offenses with Justin Fields under center, and there's still plenty of time to make that happen. Recent returns at training camp, however, haven't been strong. At practice Tuesday, a promising drive in 11-on-11s ended with a Fields interception, per SNYTV's Connor Hughes. That followed some struggles in 7-on-7s for Fields, and his total numbers the last three practices before Tuesday were reportedly 8 of 32 with an interception. [Subscribe to Yahoo Fantasy Plus and unlock Instant Mock Drafts today] The usual caveats apply here. It's early in camp, when defenses are universally ahead of offenses. Fields is in his first season under head coach Aaron Glenn and offensive coordinator Tanner Engstrand. The Jets are still trying to sort out what personnel to use with which packages, and play to their strengths. It's all very routine at this time of year. That said, the Jets are counting on Fields to help move the franchise in the right direction starting this season. While he'll likely never be confused with a pure passer, those numbers need to improve for the Jets' offense to be effective. Top NFL training camp stories Browns release first depth chart: The Cleveland Browns released their first depth chart of the preseason Monday, and the quarterback order is as expected. Veteran Joe Flacco is listed as the starter, and fellow veteran Kenny Pickett is listed at No. 2. Rookie Dillon Gabriel, whom the Browns selected in the third round of April's draft, is No. 3. And fellow rookie Shedeur Sanders, whose slide to the fifth round was the story of the NFL Draft, is listed at No. 4. Cleveland's first preseason game is Friday at Carolina. Micah Parsons continues hold-in: On Monday at Cowboys camp, Micah Parsons spoke at length with defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus to the side of defensive line drills during periods of individual work. He then spent most of team drills with Cowboys vice president of player personnel Will McClay, watching at ground level from the sideline while team owner and general manager Jerry Jones watched from an adjacent temporary tower. It's all indicative of how Parsons isn't simply holding in to avoid daily fines amid lagging contract negotiations, he's communicating with team leadership during the process. Travis Hunter, OROY DROY? What kind of impact could Travis Hunter have on both sides of the ball during his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars? If you ask head coach Liam Coen, a historic one. Appearing on "The Rich Eisen Show" on Monday, Jaguars head coach Liam Coen agreed with the host that Hunter, who was selected No. 2 overall in April's NFL Draft, could win both NFL Offensive and Defensive Rookie of the Year as a wide receiver and cornerback. "I do think it's possible," Coen said. "He is committed to driving, not just himself, but his teammates as well. I think his teammates ... these guys are challenging him every single day. He doesn't get a free pass because he was the second overall pick and he's Travis Hunter." Patriots DC has health scare: New England defensive coordinator Terrell Williams had a health scare in the middle of team practice on Monday, when he fell onto the grass on the sidelines, according to reporters covering training camp. Medical staff quickly acted, went to aid Williams and rolled out a stretcher to help carry him off the field. The coach was able to get up on his own, per TMZ. Doug Kyed of the Boston Herald later reported that Williams collapsed due to dehydration, but was "fine" and receiving treatment. 3 observations from Day 10 of New York Jets training camp
New York Jets 2025 NFL training camp is well underway and will be watched under a microscope each and every day. Throughout practices, updates are shared during the workouts which make for intriguing and important notes. In terms of Day 10 of training camp, what stood out the most? Here are three observations from the 10th day of Jets training camp: Back-to-back bad days from Fields The Jets offense has only had one day of training camp practices considered as a "good" outing through 10 workouts. The last two certainly were not that. Many reports indicated a few very, very poor sessions from quarterback Justin Fields specifically. On the plus side Breece Hall at least made a few players, according to reports. At least one we have a visual of. On one catch, it wasn't exactly a full diving effort, but Hall went all out to make the grab: Defense playing well While Fields and the offense have struggled, it might have been for good reason. The Jets defense had another top outing on Monday. Cornerbacks Sauce Gardner and Brandon Stephens are earning praise.
