NHL schedule release: What to watch for next season, from Matthew Schaefer to more Alex Ovechkin
Soon, there will be 1,344, with each of the league's 32 teams playing 84 games starting in 2026-27. But until that happens, here's a look at some of the best hockey has to offer next season:
Schaefer's debut?
No. 1 draft pick Matthew Schaefer is no sure bet to make the New York Islanders out of training camp. If he does, Schaefer would be in line to make his NHL debut on Oct. 9 in Pittsburgh against Sidney Crosby and the Penguins.
Crosby, 38, is entering his 21st season. Schaefer turns 18 just a little over a month before opening night.
Schaefer would be the second top pick in three years to start his pro career against Crosby on the road. Chicago's Connor Bedard also did so in 2023 on the way to winning the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year.
Full slates
The back-to-back defending champion Florida Panthers are set to raise their second consecutive Stanley Cup banner as part of an opening night tripleheader on Oct. 7, and it will not take long for fans to see way more games on the same day.
There are 16, with every team in action, for the first time this season on Saturday, Oct. 11. That happens again on Tuesday, Oct. 28 with game times staggered from 6 p.m. until 11 p.m. EDT.
Each of the three final Saturdays of the season features 15 games.
Special events
The Penguins and Nashville Predators face off in a pair of games in Stockholm on Nov. 14 and 16. The New York Rangers visit the Boston Bruins in the 'Thanksgiving Showdown' on Black Friday, Nov. 28.
The first Winter Classic in Florida takes place Jan. 2 when the Panthers host the Rangers at the Miami Marlins' ballpark with a retractable roof. A surefire open-air game across the Sunshine State comes roughly a month later when the Tampa Bay Lightning play Boston in the Stadium Series at the home of the NFL's Buccaneers.
The Islanders' UBS Arena is expected to hold a pre-Olympic sendoff event when the season pauses Feb. 6 for players to participate in the Milan Games. The event is in lieu of All-Star festivities, which are being rethought for future years after the success of the 4 Nations Face-Off tournament in February.
Milestones in reach
Alex Ovechkin is three goals away from 900 after breaking Wayne Gretzky's NHL career record in April. Whatever number Ovechkin finishes at — he turns 40 in September and this is the final year of his contract with the Washington Capitals — will become the new 894 that seemed unapproachable until the successful 'GR8 Chase.'
Ovechkin has not closed the door on playing beyond his 21st season, but if this is it, game 81 is against Crosby in Washington. The finale is at Columbus against the Blue Jackets, against whom Ovechkin debuted in 2005.
Crosby is 13 points away from becoming the ninth player in league history with 1,700. Ovechkin would be the 10th if he records 77.
Three-time MVP Connor McDavid, coming off another Edmonton loss in the final to Florida, is far and away the leading scorer since entering the league in 2015. He's 18 points away from 1,100, while longtime Oilers teammate Leon Draisaitl needs 53 to get to 1,000.

Bruins' David Pastrnak Did Something Special This Season
While the Boston Bruins had a disastrous 2024-25 season, David Pastrnak had himself another great year. In 82 games on the campaign, he recorded 43 goals, 63 assists, and 106 points. This included posting 19 goals and 46 points in the Bruins' final 30 games of the season alone. Overall, it was nothing short of an excellent season for Pastrnak, and he did something truly special because of it. This was the third year in a row that Pastrnak recorded at least 100 points, which is a significant accomplishment. Not too many NHL players reach 100 points in a single season, so Pastrnak successfully doing so in three consecutive years is incredibly impressive. It only demonstrates just how dominant a player he has been for the Bruins. Pastrnak hitting the 100-point mark this season was especially impressive in 2024-25, though, as the Bruins did not have too many impactful offensive contributors around him. In addition to recording 100 points for the third straight season in a row, Pastrnak has now also scored at least 40 goals in four straight seasons. Furthermore, the 2024-25 season was the second year in a row where he had 63 assists. Thus, he certainly has been making an impact with his playmaking skills, too. It will now be interesting to see if Pastrnak can record 100 points for the fourth straight year next season from here. Given how dominant he continues to play, it is hard to bet against him doing so. 5 Bruins Entering Final Year Of Contract The Boston Bruins have several players who are entering the final year of their contracts. Kings' Anze Kopitar gives update on retirement plans
Anze Kopitar isn't seeking a contract extension. That's what Los Angeles Kings GM Ken Holland told NHL Network Radio. Even with Kopitar entering the final year of his current deal, his camp told the Kings that an extension isn't on their mind. The takeaway: Kopitar is taking it "year-by-year" from here, writes Pro Hockey Rumors. Kopitar is still skilled enough to play for a long time. But the 37-year old does have 1,454 games on his body and could view retirement as something coming sooner rather than later. In 81 games in 2024-25, Kopitar had 21 goals and 46 assists (67 points) in 81 games. He added nine points in seven playoff games. It certainly doesn't seem like he wants to go anywhere else. The only question is how long does Kopitar want this to continue. He has 440 career goals and 838 career assists for 1,278 points. And he'll add to those totals this season. Whether he has a next year remains to be seen. As Pittsburgh Penguins defenseman Erik Karlsson's name remains in offseason trade speculation, NHL analysts are starting to come up with trade destinations that could benefit all parties involved. One of those could be the Edmonton Oilers, who are coming off back-to-back Stanley Cup Final losses and looking to bolster their defense. TSN's Travis Yost floated the runners-up as a potential trade destination, laying out a framework that would involve Darnell Nurse heading to the Penguins. 'Why Edmonton?' Yost wrote. 'Adding more offensive firepower to this Western Conference juggernaut would seem silly at first blush, but there are two compelling reasons to consider it. 'One, the Oilers might be able to solve a contract issue of their own as part of a bigger trade. Two, Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl still benefit from another playmaker on the ice, especially from the blueline.' In Yost's eyes, Edmonton could address both its cap issues and its postseason struggles on the blue line in one swing if they complete a Darnell Nurse-Karlsson swap. Karlsson, 35, still carries elite offensive upside, having averaged 70 points per 82 games across the last three seasons. He carries a cap hit of $11.5 million annually, but Pittsburgh could retain some salary in a potential trade. Nurse, meanwhile, is younger (30) but is coming off a low-production season with just 33 points in 76 regular-season games. Making things worse, he carries an annual $9.25 million cap hit through June 2030. Karlsson, who has two years left on his deal, holds a full no-move clause but could be willing to waive it under the right conditions. 'He's arrived in Pittsburgh as they're headed in the wrong direction,' NHL insider Chris Johnston said about Karlsson's mindset. 'I have to think he's going to get antsy at a certain point here.'
