Bristol Bears sign Louis Rees-Zammit on return to rugby union
The 24-year-old, who left the sport in January 2024, announced in August that he would be returning, following a failed attempt to break into the NFL.
Rees-Zammit was on the training squads of the Kansas City Chiefs and Jacksonville Jaguars, but never played in a regular-season game.
Capped 32 times by Wales, Rees-Zammit spent six years at Bristol's local rivals Gloucester before joining the NFL's International Player Pathway.
Director of Rugby, Pat Lam, said Bristol Bears are "thrilled" to welcome Rees-Zammit back to rugby union.
'Louis is a world-class player," he said. 'He has the drive and ambition to be one of the best back-three players in the world, and his goals align perfectly with our ambitions as a club.
'At just 24 years old, we know the athlete and competitor he is. The way we play and the way he wants to play fit seamlessly together, and we're looking forward to working with him when he joins the group tomorrow.'
Rees-Zammit said: 'Bristol Bears was the obvious choice for me. The style of rugby the team play – all about entertaining the fans and growing the game – perfectly aligns to how I want to play and how I express myself on and off the field.
'I want to get fans out of their seats, create exciting moments and help people fall in the love with the game."
He'll join up with the Bristol squad on Saturday 16 August, with their Prem season starting on 28 September against Leicester.

NFL makes decision on anti-racism messaging for 2025 after controversially scrapping it for the Super Bowl
The NFL is continuing its on-field social justice messaging for a sixth straight season, despite opting to scrap its anti-racism campaign at the Super Bowl earlier this year. All 32 teams will feature an end zone message of their choice at each home game throughout the season, selecting from four options: 'End Racism,' 'Stop Hate,' 'Choose Love,' or 'Inspire Change.' Once again, 'It Takes All of Us' will be stenciled in the opposite end zone for all games. The only change from 2024 is that 'Inspire Change' replaces 'Vote.' The decision comes after the league faced a backlash last season when it opted to scrap its 'End Racism' messaging for the first time since 2020 at the most recent Super Bowl, between the Chiefs and Eagles in New Orleans. NFL officials were forced to deny that the decision had anything to do with the presence of president Donald Trump in the stands for the game. Commissioner Roger Goodell also previously said that he doesn't believe the league's policies to promote diversity are in conflict with the Trump administration's efforts to ban diversity, equity and inclusion programs in the federal government. This season, the social justice messages will complement the league's other cause campaigns such as Salute to Service and Crucial Catch, which will also appear in end zones during select weeks. 'We're working hand-in-hand with players, and alongside our clubs, to amplify player voices and underscore what is most important to them,' Anna Isaacson, the NFL's senior vice president of social responsibility, told The Associated Press. 'For decades, the NFL and its players have been a unifying force in American culture and society that brings people of all cultures and backgrounds together to enjoy America's most popular sport. 'This is an honor and responsibility that the league takes seriously, which is why we actively invest in off-field programs and on-field initiatives that promote unity.' The league will use 'End Racism' along with 'It Takes All of Us' in the back of end zones for all international games for the second straight season. The reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles will feature 'Choose Love' for their season opener against the Dallas Cowboys that kicks off the NFL schedule on September 4. They will rotate all four league-approved end zone messages throughout the season. 'Choose Love' was first introduced in 2022 and has been embraced by the Bills following a shooting that killed 10 people at a Buffalo supermarket. 'Choose Love continues to resonate across the league,' Isaacson said. 'It has become a unifying message of healing and hope, one that many players continue to wear voluntarily on helmet decals.' Players will again have the option to display one of the five messages on their helmets this season. Since 2017, the NFL has provided more than $460 million to dozens of grant partners and hundreds of grassroots organizations through its Inspire Change initiative, helping benefit communities in need. Inspire Change has supported more than 650 nonprofits and 2,100 players and alumni, matching grants focused on mentorship, workforce development, and food insecurity.

Premier League clubs to have final say on playing matches abroad as vote option emerges
Spanish football will break new ground this season after Villarreal and Barcelona were given permission to play their LaLiga fixture in Miami on December 20 - but English football will not follow suit for now Complacent Premier League bosses have 'no plans' to move any of their domestic fixtures abroad - and claim they have no need to export their brand. Spanish football will break new ground this season after Villarreal and Barcelona were given permission to play their LaLiga fixture in Miami on December 20. But Premier League chief executive Richard Masters insists English football won't be following suit - even though clubs voted in favour of a 39th game back in 2008 and it was only binned after world governing body FIFA vetoed it. Masters said: 'LaLiga have been very open about their desire to play matches abroad. The Spanish federation have approved it, but as far as the Premier League's position is concerned, I'm very clear about it. 'We don't have plans to play matches abroad. It's not being discussed around our table. The overall objective of playing matches abroad is to grow that league internationally - but we're now a genuinely global league. 'All of the data points suggest the Premier League is growing internationally without the need to play matches abroad. We have fantastic international broadcasting partnerships, we've got global digital services now for fans to interact with the game and, of course, we're investing in other things like the Premier League Summer Series. 'But I think playing matches domestically is where we're going to stay.' Masters' optimism that English football's domestic calendar will remain confined to these shores may not be shared by Premier League clubs - more than half of whom have foreign owners. If a two-thirds majority - 14 top-flight clubs - decide they fancy playing abroad, Masters will be powerless to stop it. Eleven of this season's Prem clubs are owned by American majority shareholders alone, and the States would be the No.1 choice for a game abroad, just as regular NBA basketball and NFL gridiron games are already played in London. Masters insisted: 'There is no desire to discuss this at the moment. If La Liga want to do it, and it's within the global framework of the game, then it'll be a very interesting thing to observe. But number one, two and three: The Premier League does not have plans to do it.' In his pre-season briefing, Masters claimed the 'lights on the dashboard are flashing green' to indicate the game's rude health economically. The rising cost of attendance for match-going supporters, however, remains a huge bone of contention for diehard fans. Bournemouth fans face a 530-mile round trip through Friday traffic for tonight's opening game at champions Liverpool. Adult tickets in the Holte end for Aston Villa 's home game with Newcastle cost an eye-watering £77, while a full adult Chelsea replica kit will set fans back £148. But Masters said: 'We fully understand the relationship between full stadiums being part of the show that goes around the world that makes English football special. 'We've had a long period of flat ticket prices - some are going up, but eight clubs have frozen their prices this year, and we're committed again to the £30 price cap for away fans. Although we can't get involved in the pricing of kits, clubs do understand affordability.'
