Ten apprenticeship places up for grabs in award-winning construction scheme

Young people and career changers invited to apply for Cyfle Building Skills initiative
APPLICATIONS are now open for the Cyfle Building Skills Shared Apprenticeship Scheme in Pembrokeshire – with only ten places available for those looking to begin a career in the construction industry.
The highly regarded programme, now in its twelfth year, offers hands-on experience across a range of trades while participants study towards a recognised vocational qualification.
Uniquely, apprentices rotate between several trusted local construction firms, gaining a broad range of on-site experience. One day a week is spent at college to support their training.
Paul Falzon, Pembrokeshire Coordinator for Cyfle, is hosting a drop-in information session on Wednesday (May 21) at The Corner Room, Haverhub, The Old Post Office, Quay Street, Haverfordwest, from 9:00am to 1:00pm. No appointment is needed.
The scheme has supported nearly 1,000 apprentices across South West Wales and has a strong success rate – with around 90% of apprentices going on to full-time employment after completing the programme.
Trades on offer include bricklaying, plastering, carpentry, electrical work, plumbing, painting and decorating, maintenance/multi-skilling, and technical roles.
Backed by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the programme aims to address the growing demand for skilled workers in the construction sector and provide a flexible, supported route into the industry.
Mr Falzon said: 'This scheme has helped hundreds of young people take their first steps into the construction industry, and we're thrilled to be expanding our presence in Pembrokeshire. Whether you're a school leaver, a career changer, or someone who enjoys practical work, I'd encourage you to come along to the drop-in session or get in touch—it could be the start of something great.'
Applications close at the end of June 2025, and with limited availability, early application is advised.
Local contractors who would like to support the scheme by offering placements are also encouraged to contact Mr Falzon directly on 07799 716 567 or paul.falzon@sky.com.

Developer begins initial work on "high-quality" Causewayhead apartments plan

The proposals would see 124 apartments made available for private sale - with a planning application set to be introduced in the autumn. A housing developer has revealed it has begun looking into a site in Causewayhead as part of plans to house 124 "high-quality" apartments. The JR Group are behind the site investigations at the proposed site off Ladyneuk Road, with the land already having been earmarked for residential use in the Local Development Plan. ‌ The builder says it is in talks with "various key partners" over the apartments, which would be brought into the private market for sale or rent. ‌ The investigations will continue over the summer - with hopes from the builder of moving towards a planning application to councillors later this year. Andrew Dallas, Projects Director at The JR Group, said: 'Causewayhead has it all - a beautifully situated location offering the perfect blend of city convenience and semi-rural charm. Its close proximity to the vibrant village of Bridge of Allan adds to its appeal. 'We've collaborated with Mosaic Architects and Clyde Design Partnerships to shape initial plans for a bespoke collection of high-end apartments that complement this remarkable setting overlooking the River Forth. 'We're excited to move forward, with site investigations now underway, and a planning application expected to be submitted to Stirling Council this autumn.'

14 photos of Edinburgh's newest fish and chips restaurant Crab and Lobster Fish Shack in South Queensferry

Ahead of its official opening date - which was fittingly announced today - National Fish & Chips Day - The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack in South Queensferry has released images of the restaurant, together with its dishes, which customers will shortly be experiencing. Bookings, together with details of the exciting new menu, went live today on its website. A soft launch event was held last night, Thursday, June 5, providing an opportunity for food bloggers and journalists to check out The Crab& Lobster Fish Shack, which is situated within the former Frankie & Bennys next to the Dakota Hotel in South Queensferry. With an expansive open kitchen at its heart, where customers can watch a team of chefs at work, The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack has a laid back, cool, nautical vibe, inspired by the exclusive seafood destination that is 'The Hamptons' in New York State. Offering high-end fish and chips, this vibrant new eatery showcases all types of fish, crab, and lobster, alongside seafood native to the coast of Scotland, sourced from the most trusted, high quality suppliers of sustainable fish and seafood. The new restaurant is creating over 60 jobs across both kitchen and front of house, and represents an investment of over £350,000 from the Coghill family, who already operate Jack 'O' Bryan's Bar & Kitchen in Dunfermline. A quick look at the menu, which not only contains fantastic signature fish and chips, reveals that many of the signature Iberian touches for which Jack 'O' Bryan's is known, and which have made the bar & kitchen such a success, are making an appearance, such as a starter of squid with chorizo jam, crispy tempura oysters with buffalo aioli, Singapore crab, and Whole Lobster Piri Piri. 'We were absolutely delighted to hold this soft launch last night,' said Bryan Coghill, who has brought The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack to fruition, together with head chef son, Jack, wife Michelle, and daughter in law, Sarah. The family now has a new team of staff in place who are looking forward to serving customers in the coming days. 'It was fantastic to see many of our friends, family, supporters and suppliers, along with media guests, come along to see what we have done to this incredible space. We treated them all to some amazing tempura oyster starters, crab delicacies, smoked salmon and caviar blinis, and then our signature fish and chips, served in our Crab & Lobster Fish Shack boxes, said Bryan. 'I am pleased to say that everybody was hugely impressed with what we have done with the space, and we're counting down the days now to our full launch. 'We thought we would use National Fish & Chip Day to announce our official opening date of next Thursday, and that our booking system and website goes live today. We literally cannot wait to start welcoming customers.' Bryan added that The Crab & Lobster Fish Shack's slogan, proudly emblazoned in neon lighting across the top of the open kitchen, as well as on the fish & chip boxes, is 'Ye Cannae Beat a Crab & Fish Shack Fish Supper'. 'We are so excited to hear this tongue twister on people's lips in the coming months!' said Bryan. 1 . Storm brews at Epsom over the 150-1 Derby outsider and his genius owner who wins millions with bargain horses

He is one of the sharpest operators in the game AL THE RAGE Storm brews at Epsom over the 150-1 Derby outsider and his genius owner who wins millions with bargain horses Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THERE is a storm brewing at Epsom - and not just with the weather. While the rain is set to pour on the Downs - and thunder and hail are forecast - there could be a tornado on the track. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Super shrewd owner Ahmad Al Shaikh has won a fortune from his bargain runners in the Derby - and he has another 150-1 outsider primed to strike this year Credit: PA Al Wasl Storm is the 150-1 outsider bookies are giving no hope in hell of winning the world's most prestigious Flat race. But his owner Ahmad Al Shaikh, a Dubai businessman who loves staying horses, knows exactly what it takes to plunder huge cheques with bargain basement horses. And he's done it loads before in the Derby. Hoo Ya Mal was a 150-1 runner-up in 2022 - his valiant second securing his owner a cheque for £350,000 before he sold him to Australia for £1.2million. A blinding bit of business as the horse has never bettered that second-place finish. Khalifa Sat was second two years before that at whopping odds of 50-1, landing Al Shaikh a cheque for just north of £100,000. When 25-1 Deira Mile and 50-1 Sayedaty Sadaty were fourth and fifth respectively last year, the gravelly-voiced Al Shaikh left Epsom a staggering £125,000 better off. In a world where horses are routinely sold for seven figures, Al Shaikh refuses to ever spend more than £80,000 - even though he and his Green Team operation have combined to win over £1m in recent years. For every purchase, he goes through their pedigrees himself (paying particular attention to the third dam) making sure they match what he likes. Which brings us back to Al Wasl Storm. Trained by Owen Burrows, the three-year-old colt was bought for just £5,900 at the sales in November 2022. He was dead last on debut at Newbury in April then came second to fellow Derby runner Rogue Impact at Lingfield. His last run was his best, winning over the 1m4f Derby trip at Chester and staying on well to the line. The £20,616 Al Shaikh, under the Green Team banner, pocketed there was nice. But it's an amazing £900,000 for winning the Derby - and the potential in stud fees as a result is practically unlimited. As an example, former Derby winner Galileo was rumoured to charge £600,000 a cover at stud before he died. So while the likes of Aidan O'Brien's Delacroix and Charlie Appleby's Ruling Court head the market, if you fancy one at a price keep looking further and further down the racecard. All the way to 150-1, where you find Al Wasl Storm. History shows he is bound to outrun his odds.
