Former Scotland and Lions prop Ian McLauchlan, known in rugby world as ‘Mighty Mouse,' dies at 83
Scottish Rugby said it was 'immensely saddened to learn' of McLauchlan's death on Friday.
Ayrshire-born McLauchlan won 43 caps for Scotland between 1969 and 1979, captaining the side 19 times.
McLauchlan's legacy was cemented on the victorious Lions tours of New Zealand and South Africa in 1971 and 1974, being one of only five players to feature in all eight test matches.
His only test try against New Zealand in June 1971, when he charged down an attempted All Blacks clearance to touch down in a 9-3 win, has passed into Lions folklore.
McLauchlan was regularly able to burrow under heavier tight-head props and give his team a set-piece advantage at a time when scrums were much more prevalent in the game.
'He was smaller than most props he came up against but I never saw anyone get the better of him,' former Scotland and Lions teammate Andy Irvine told scottishrugby.org. 'He was so tough, almost indestructible.'
After his playing career, McLauchlan, who had been a teacher in Edinburgh, spent a brief spell in rugby journalism before setting up his own marketing company.
He served as a member of the Scottish Rugby Board from 2010 to 2019 and was president of the Scottish Rugby Union between 2010 and 2012.
McLauchlan was also a director of European Professional Club Rugby and played a key role in the transition from the previous competitions overseen by ERC.
Scottish Rugby said McLauchlan 'had to endure challenges around his mobility in recent years.'

Jets bolster defensive line with trade for Browns' Jowon Briggs
FLORHAM PARK, N.J. (AP) — The New York Jets acquired defensive tackle Jowon Briggs from the Cleveland Browns in a trade Wednesday that also included draft picks. The Browns also sent a seventh-round pick in next year's NFL draft to New York for a sixth-rounder next year. Briggs had 13 tackles with two quarterback hits in six games for Cleveland last season after being a seventh-round selection. The 6-foot-1, 313-pound D-lineman had 12 career sacks and 170 tackles during a college career that began at Virginia (2019-20) and finished with three years at Cincinnati (2021-23). Briggs adds depth to a defensive line in New York that's led by three-time Pro Bowl pick Quinnen Williams and includes Micheal Clemons, Jay Tufele, Will McDonald and Rashad Weaver. Defensive tackle Byron Cowart has missed time in training camp with an ankle injury, so the addition of Briggs could help fill that void for the Jets if Cowart is sidelined for an extended time. Basketball at 2028 LA Olympics will start 2 days before opening ceremony, FIBA says
MIES, Switzerland (AP) — Basketball at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics will start two days before the opening ceremony for those Games, organizers confirmed Wednesday. FIBA, the sport's global governing body, said that it has reviewed a revised basketball schedule for Los Angeles and that games will begin on July 12, 2028 — ahead of the July 14 opening ceremony. It is unclear if the men's tournament, the women's tournament or both will start before the official opening. A preliminary schedule released last month calls for three basketball games on July 12 and three more on July 13. 'This adjustment allows the quarterfinals to be played over two days and will also ensure that no game will start earlier than (noon), enhancing the overall experience for players, teams, fans and broadcasters,' FIBA said in a news release. Bronze-medal games will be played on July 28 and 29, and gold-medal games will occur on July 29 and 30. July 30 is the final day of the Games. Several other sports also are scheduled to start before the opening ceremony, including field hockey, rugby sevens, water polo, handball, cricket and soccer. The canoe slalom competition in Oklahoma City is expected to start in the morning of July 14, hours before the opening ceremony later that day about 1,200 miles (1,931 km) away. The U.S. is the defending men's and women's Olympic basketball champion. The women have won eight consecutive golds, while the men have won five straight.
